This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the famous city of Burgos there lived two wealthy cavaliers, one of whom was called Don Diego de Carriazo, and the other Don Juan de Avendaño. Don Diego had a son called after himself, and Don Juan another, whose name was Don Tomas de Avendaño. These two young gentlemen being the principal persons of the following tale, we shall for the sake of brevity call them Carriazo and Avendaño.Carriazo might be about thirteen or little more, when, prompted by a scampish disposition, without having had any cause to complain of bad treatment at home, he ran away from his father's house, and cast himself upon the wide world. So much did he enjoy a life of unrestricted freedom, that amidst all the wants and discomforts attendant upon it, he never missed the plenty of his father's house. He neither tired of trudging on foot, nor cared for cold or heat. For him all seasons of the year were genial spring. His sleep was as sound on a heap of straw as on soft mattresses, and he made himself as snug in a hayloft as between two Holland sheets. In short, he made such way in the profession he had chosen, that he could have given lessons to the famous Guzman de Alfarache.

Download or read book Galicia written by Annette M. B. Meakin and published by Heritage Books. This book was released on 1909 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Galicia is the least known and the least written about of all the little kingdoms that go to the making of Spain. Her boundaries have been greatly reduced since the days when the Romans divided the Peninsula into five provinces and called one of them Galicia".The irruption of the Saracens in 713 again changed the aspect of the Peninsula, and the limits of Galicia were contracted; but Spanish geographers to this day call her a reino, or kingdom, and divide her into four little provinces 'Coru'a, Pontevedra, Orense, and Lugo." The history of this little known Spanish kingdom examines geography, early history, architecture, emigration, farming, monasteries and other topics. Chapters include: Ancient Galicia; The Geography of Galicia; The First Golden Age; The Salve Regina; The Language of Galicia; Pilgrims to Santiago; The Architecture of Galicia; The Cathedral of Santiago; The Portico de Gloria; Sculptured Capitals; The Royal Hospital; The Colegiata de Sar; La Coru'a; Emigration; Rosalia Castro; Santiago de Compostela; Galicia's Livestock; Padron; La Bellisima Noya; Pontevedra; Vigo and Tuy; Orense; Monforte and Lugo; Betanzos and Ferrol; The Great Monasteries of Galicia; Trees, Fruits, and Flowers; and Dives Callaecia. A map of Galicia, 105 illustrations (mostly photographs), a bibliography, and an index to full names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.

Book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer

Download or read book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book Gender and Power in Prehispanic Mesoamerica

Download or read book Gender and Power in Prehispanic Mesoamerica written by Rosemary A. Joyce and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender was a fluid potential, not a fixed category, before the Spaniards came to Mesoamerica. Childhood training and ritual shaped, but did not set, adult gender, which could encompass third genders and alternative sexualities as well as "male" and "female." At the height of the Classic period, Maya rulers presented themselves as embodying the entire range of gender possibilities, from male through female, by wearing blended costumes and playing male and female roles in state ceremonies. This landmark book offers the first comprehensive description and analysis of gender and power relations in prehispanic Mesoamerica from the Formative Period Olmec world (ca. 1500-500 BC) through the Postclassic Maya and Aztec societies of the sixteenth century AD. Using approaches from contemporary gender theory, Rosemary Joyce explores how Mesoamericans created human images to represent idealized notions of what it meant to be male and female and to depict proper gender roles. She then juxtaposes these images with archaeological evidence from burials, house sites, and body ornaments, which reveals that real gender roles were more fluid and variable than the stereotyped images suggest.

Book Challenges to Implementing Effective Reading Intervention in Schools

Download or read book Challenges to Implementing Effective Reading Intervention in Schools written by Barbara Foorman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue is a "how to" on overcoming the many systems-level challenges in K–12 public education to implement effective reading interventions for the vast numbers of students reading below grade level. It emphasizes building researcher–practitioner partnerships, providing ongoing professional development for teachers, and removing institutional barriers to change as the keys to effective reading intervention. Interventions for the upper grades focus on the challenges of coaxing content-area teachers to learn new routines for building background knowledge, teaching academic vocabulary, and conducting discussions to foster critical reading and knowledge application. In the primary grades, interventions follow a multi-tiered system of support where enhanced classroom instruction is supported by small-group intervention for struggling readers. The volume also discusses the importance of training special educators to implement data-based individuation. This is the 154th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.
