Book The Material and the Ideal

Download or read book The Material and the Ideal written by Anthony Cutler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the diverse interests of Jean-Michel Spieser, his colleagues, students and friends contribute papers focused on topics ranging from the changing role of the apse and the layout of late antique basilicas to holy relics said to have been brought from Constantinople. Many of the articles address the nature and impact of specific media - goldsmiths' work, ivory and ceramics - while a group of highly original, broader studies is devoted to such larger issues as ritual display in the tenth century, the metaphorical significance of pottery and an interrogation of the supposed influence of Byzantine icons on Western medieval art. Throughout, the achievement of the authors is to move from concrete observations of particular objects to the larger meaning they held for those who commissioned and made use of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy has inherited a powerful impulse to embrace either dualism or a reductive monism—either a radical separation of mind and body or the reduction of mind to body. But from its origins in the writings of the Stoics, the first thoroughgoing materialists, another view has acknowledged that no forms of materialism can be completely self-inclusive—space, time, the void, and sense are the incorporeal conditions of all that is corporeal or material. In The Incorporeal Elizabeth Grosz argues that the ideal is inherent in the material and the material in the ideal, and, by tracing its development over time, she makes the case that this same idea reasserts itself in different intellectual contexts. Grosz shows that not only are idealism and materialism inextricably linked but that this "belonging together" of the entirety of ideality and the entirety of materiality is not mediated or created by human consciousness. Instead, it is an ontological condition for the development of human consciousness. Grosz draws from Spinoza's material and ideal concept of substance, Nietzsche's amor fati, Deleuze and Guattari's plane of immanence, Simondon's preindividual, and Raymond Ruyer's self-survey or autoaffection to show that the world preexists the evolution of the human and that its material and incorporeal forces are the conditions for all forms of life, human and nonhuman alike. A masterwork by an eminent theoretician, The Incorporeal offers profound new insight into the mind-body problem

Book Sex and Salvation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jennifer Cole
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2010-12-15
  • ISBN : 0226113329
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Sex and Salvation written by Jennifer Cole and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex and Salvation chronicles the coming of age of a generation of women in Tamatave in the years that followed Madagascar’s economic liberalization. Eager to forge a viable future amid poverty and rising consumerism, many young women have entered the sexual economy in hope of finding a European husband. Just as many Westerners believe that young people break with the past as they enter adulthood, Malagasy citizens fear that these women have severed the connection to their history and culture. Jennifer Cole’s elegant analysis shows how this notion of generational change is both wrong and consequential. It obscures the ways young people draw on long-standing ideas of gender and sexuality, it ignores how urbanites relate to their rural counterparts, and it neglects the relationship between these husband-seeking women and their elders who join Pentecostal churches. And yet, as talk about the women circulates through the city’s neighborhoods, bars, Internet cafes, and churches, it teaches others new ways of being. Cole’s sophisticated depiction of how a generation’s coming of age contributes to social change eschews a narrow focus on crisis. Instead, she reveals how fantasies of rupture and conceptions of the changing life course shape the everyday ways that people create the future.

Book Chemistry of Silica and Zeolite Based Materials

Download or read book Chemistry of Silica and Zeolite Based Materials written by Abderrazzak Douhal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry of Silica and Zeolite-Based Materials covers a wide range of topics related to silica-based materials from design and synthesis to applications in different fields of science and technology. Since silica is transparent and inert to the light, it is a very attractive host material for constructing artificial photosynthesis systems. As an earth-abundant oxide, silica is an ideal and basic material for application of various oxides, and the science and technology of silica-based materials are fundamentally important for understanding other oxide-based materials. The book examines nanosolvation and confined molecules in silica hosts, catalysis and photocatalysis, photonics, photosensors, photovoltaics, energy, environmental sciences, drug delivery, and health. Written by a highly experienced and internationally renowned team from around the world, Chemistry of Silica and Zeolite-Based Materials is ideal for chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, physicists, biologists, biomedical sciences, environmental scientists, toxicologists, and pharma scientists. --- "The enormous versatility of silica for building a large variety of materials with unique properties has been very well illustrated in this book.... The reader will be exposed to numerous potential applications of these materials – from photocatalytic, optical and electronic applications, to chemical reactivity in confined spaces and biological applications. This book is of clear interest not only to PhD students and postdocs, but also to researchers in this field seeking an understanding of the possible applications of meso and microporous silica-derived materials." - Professor Avelino Corma, Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ-CSIC) and Polytechnical University of Valencia, Spain Discusses the most important advances in various fields using silica materials, including nanosolvation and confined molecules in silica hosts, catalysis and photocatalysis, and other topics Written by a global team of experts from a variety of science and technology disciplines Ideal resource for chemists, materials scientists, and chemical engineers working with oxide-based materials
