Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At what point does a theology become an ideology? How can a Christian distinguish the two? Jacques Ellul has always taken pains to differentiate them, but in this book he provides both a theoretical framework and important examples. Some popular theologies, particularly those that attempt to intertwine biblical theology with Marxist thought, fall into the trap of reaching "theological" conclusions by other means, Ellul believes, so that we cannot consider them as true theologies. From both a biblical-theological and sociopolitical perspective Ellul examines the attempt to relate Christianity to Marxist thought. By reviewing in detail several key Marxist-Christian books, Ellul exposes the weaknesses of so-called Marxist Christianity (which he says is neither Marxist nor Christian), and argues that the biblical perspective takes exception to all political power, leaving Christian anarchism as the realistic revolutionary option. The preface by translator Joyce Main Hanks provides an excellent introduction to the book, showing how it fits into Ellul's thought and how it relates to Ellul's previous work.

Download or read book Only with Marx and Jesus written by Thomas M. Mongar and published by University Press of Amer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Jesus before Christianity and Marx before Communism. It argues not only that both men sought to end moral and economic estrangement forever, but that Jesus' relational revolution failed because it lacked the foundation of Marx's emancipatory revolution. The absence of the emancipatory conditions for moral regeneration encouraged Jesus' followers to transform his teachings and practices into fetishes and illusions of the Christian Church. Jesus made the same mistake as the later Young Hegelians, who assumed that a change of mind (in Jesus' case, a change of heart) would change the world. Marx's emancipatory revolution also failed, partly because the conditions for abolishing estrangement were absent, and partly because his theories had been misunderstood. The result was the "crude and thoughtless communism" he warned against in the Ecomonic and Philosophical Manuscripts. Now that Marx's theory has been recovered in full and most of the conditions for liberation are present in the West, the stage has been set for the renewal of the emancipatory revolution, which should dissolve what remains of existing Communism at the same time it lifts the burdens of estrangement, spiritual impoverishment, and statism from the shoulders of those living in the bourgeois nations of the West and Third World.

Book Between Marx and Christ

Download or read book Between Marx and Christ written by James Bentley and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity has for centuries been the dominant religion in Europe and in much of the world beyond. Marxism has inspried the widest and deepest social movements of modern times. The encounters between the two have been correspondingly arduous and complex, ranging from drawn combat to dialogue. In this absorbing study, James Bentley reconstructs one key sequence in the history of the relationship: the dialogue between Marxists and Christians in the German-speaking countries of Europe over the past hundred years. Bentley offers a rich and detailed discussion of the explorations, debates and controversies of the period. The Christian writers discussed here include Blumhardt, Barth and Solle; among Marxists, such contrasting figures as Kautsky and Bloch receive concentrated attention. The historical and political settings of the dialogue are constantly present in Bentley’s study—from the First World War to the Vietnamese revolution, from the rise of Stalin to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Between Marx and Christ makes a fascinating scholarly contribution to the history of European thought—and casts unexpected light on the intellectual orgiins of latter-day “theology of liberation.”

Book Marx Or Jesus

Book excerpt: Konidaris contracted its Greek language rights. "Easy to read" says BOOKSTORE JOURNAL. Evans contrasts the lives, manifestors, principles, targeted enemies, influence of Marx & Jesus & includes texts of opposing manifestos. In placing the men side by side, Evans enhances understanding by the backdrop each man brings to the other. For if you have some knowledge about one, learning about the other brings perspective, much in the way that learning another language improves knowledge of your native tongue. Excerpt about Marx: "Karl Marx was different. His parents knew it. Others saw it." "And Marx, like Walt Whitman, celebrated himself." "History paints the picture of a man on his way: If he couldn't walk a path yielded to him, he elbowed through the political crowd." Excerpt about Jesus: "Jesus was a Jew. You cannot understand his life apart from Israel...The Bible presents a drama in which the life & spirit of the new covenant intersects with the letter of the old...Resultant tremors shake the foundations...Leaders close in for the kill. At this point Jesus gathers his followers to explain - in story form without handles for his enemies to grab - his heretofore hidden plan. This is his manifesto."

Book Class Struggle in the New Testament

Download or read book Class Struggle in the New Testament written by Robert J. Myles and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Class Struggle in the New Testament engages the political and economic realities of the first century to unmask the mediation of class through several New Testament texts and traditions. Essays span a range of subfields, presenting class struggle as the motor force of history by responding to recent debates, historical data, and new evidence on the political-economic world of Jesus, Paul, and the Gospels. Chapters address collective struggles in the Gospels; the Roman military and class; the usefulness of categories like peasant, retainer, and middling groups for understanding the world of Jesus; the class basis behind the origin of archangels; the Gospels as products of elite culture; the implication of capitalist ideology upon biblical interpretation; and the New Testament’s use of slavery metaphors, populist features, and gifting practices. This book will become a definitive reference point for future discussion.

Book Agrarian Socialism in America

Download or read book Agrarian Socialism in America written by Jim Bissett and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was Oklahoma, of all places, more hospitable to socialism than any other state in America? In this provocative book, Jim Bissett chronicles the rise and fall of the Socialist Party of Oklahoma during the first two decades of the twentieth century, when socialism in the United States enjoyed its golden age. To explain socialism’s popularity in Oklahoma, Bissett looks back to the state’s strong tradition of agrarian reform. Drawing most of its support from working farmers, the Socialist Party of Oklahoma was rooted in such well-established organizations as the Farmers Alliance and the Indiahoma Farmers’ Union. And to broaden its appeal, the Party borrowed from the ideology both of the American Revolution and of Christianity. By making Marxism speak in American terms, the author argues, Party activists counteracted the prevailing notion that socialism was illegitimate or un-American.
