Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mars as the Abode of Life IN 1906 Professor Lowell was asked by the trustee of the Lowell Institute to deliver a course of lectures there upon the planet Mars. Eleven years had elapsed since, at the invitation of the former trustee, he had done the like. When the time came for their delivery unusual interest was manifested, the course proving the most thronged of any ever given before the Insti tute. So great was the demand for seats that the hall could not contain the crowd, and the lectures had to be repeated in the afternoons, to audiences almost as large. The eight lectures were then published, with Slight changes, in six papers in the Century Magazine, and were subsequently wanted by Macmillan and Com pany for issuance in book form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mars and Its Canals To set forth science in a popular, that is, in a generally understandable, form is as obligatory as to present it in a more technical manner. If men are to benefit by it, it must be expressed to their com prehension. To do this should be feasible for him who is master of his subject and is both the best test of, and the best training to, that post. Espe cially vital is it that the exposition should be done at first hand; for to describe what a man has him self discovered comes as near as possible to making a reader the co-discoverer of it. Not only are thus escaped the mistaken glosses of second-hand knowl edge, but an aroma of actuality, which cannot be filtered through another mind without sensible evap oration, clings to the account of the pioneer. Nor is it so hard to make any well-grasped matter com prehensible to a man of good general intelligence as is commonly supposed. The whole object of science is to synthesize, and so simplify; and did we but know the uttermost of a subject we could make it singularly clear. Meanwhile technical phraseology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mars: Sinus Titanum; November, 1894 This book is the result of a special study of the planet made during the last Opposition, at an observatory put up for the purpose of get ting as good air as practicable, at Flagstaff, Arizona. A steady atmosphere is essential to the study of planetary detail: size of instru ment being a very secondary matter. A large instrument in poor air will not begin to show what a smaller one in good air will. When this is recognized, as it eventually will be, it will be come the fashion to put up observatories Where they may see rather than be seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aleriel, or a Voyage to Other Worlds: A Tale Neptune are much larger Mercury, Mars, the planetoids, and the satellites much smaller; Venus, our twin-sister world, almost the same. In form, the Earth is nearly a sphere, and so are all, or nearly all, its fellow-worlds; some are more flattened at the poles, and some less, The Earth is enveloped in an atmosphere, - so it seems are Venus, Mercury, Mars, and probably the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn. The earth has continents and oceans, - so have Mars and (probably) Venus. The Earth has snow in winter, - so it seems has Mars. The Earth possesses a satellite, - so do Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune possess their satel lites. In fact, the Earth is peculiar in nothing /which we might expect to trace in other worlds. Why should we suppose it to be the sole abode of life? This subject has been much discussed. Not to speak of the older astronomers, in our own time Proctor, Flammarion, Brewster, and Powell have discussed it. I must own that the objections have ever seemed to me to be most frivolous. Can this grain on the sands of infinity - this little planet of an unimportant system - be the sole abode of vitality? A Critical Examination of Professor Percival Lowell's Book, Mars and Its Canals: With an Alternative Explanation This small volume was commenced as a review article on Professor Percival Lowell's book, Mars and its Canals, with the object of showing that the large amount of new and interesting facts contained in this work did not invalidate the con elusion I had reached in 1902, and stated in my book on Man's Place in the? Universe, that Mars was not habitable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
