Download or read book Basic Writings written by Paul Ree and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the first English translations of The Origin of the Moral Sensations and Psychological Observations, the two most important works by the German philosopher Paul Rée. These essays present Rée’s moral philosophy, which influenced the ideas of his close friend Friedrich Nietzsche considerably. Nietzsche scholars have often incorrectly attributed to him arguments and ideas that are Rée’s and have failed to detect responses to Rée’s works in Nietzsche’s writings. Rée’s thinking combined two strands: a pessimistic conception of human nature, presented in the French moralists’ aphoristic style that would become a mainstay of Nietzsche’s own writings, and a theory of morality derived from Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Rée’s moral Darwinism was a central factor prompting Nietzsche to write On the Genealogy of Morals and the groundwork for much of today’s “evolutionary ethics.” In an illuminating critical introduction, Robin Small examines Rée’s life and work, locating his application of evolutionary concepts to morality within a broader history of Darwinism while exploring Rée’s theoretical and personal relationship with Nietzsche. In placing Nietzsche in his intellectual and social context, Small profoundly challenges the myth of Nietzsche as a solitary thinker.

Book The Enterprise of Knowledge

Download or read book The Enterprise of Knowledge written by Isaac Levi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work challenges some widely held positions in epistemology - those of Peirce and Popper on the one hand and those of Quine and Kuhn on the other. The author contends that epistemological infallibilism is compatible with his view that knowledge evolves through a process of updating and correcting. Knowledge is regarded as a resource for decision and inquiry, a standard for serious possibility.

Book On the Other Side s of 150

Download or read book On the Other Side s of 150 written by Linda M. Morra and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Other Side(s) of 150 explores the different literary, historical and cultural legacies of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations. It asks vital questions about the ways that histories and stories have been suppressed and invites consideration about what happens once a commemorative moment has passed. Like a Cubist painting, this modality offers a critical strategy by which also to approach the volume as dismantling, reassembling, and re-enacting existing commemorative tropes; as offering multiple, conditional, and contingent viewpoints that unfold over time; and as generating a broader (although far from being comprehensive) range of counter-memorial performances. The chapters in this volume are thus provisional, interconnected, and adaptive: they offer critical assemblages by which to approach commemorative narratives or showcase lacunae therein; by which to return to and intervene in ongoing readings of the past from the present moment; and by which not necessarily to resolve, but rather to understand the troubled and troubling narratives of the present moment. Contributors propose that these preoccupations are not a means of turning away from present concerns, but rather a means of grappling with how the past informs or is shaped to inform them; and how such concerns are defined by immediate social contexts and networks.

Book White Heat

Download or read book White Heat written by Carroll W. Pursell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology has been called the art of the twentieth century. It is the expression of everything that makes us human. Our myths and rituals, our fantasies and creativity all find expression in our technology. The ability to forge tools by the fashioning of metal in its 'white heat' state was preceded by the creation of tools in stone. This was the first indication of humanity's capacity to shape and use the raw materials available to it. It reached its peak in the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century and today its momentum can be seen in every part of our lives. It is this combination of technological creativity and human passion which Carroll Pursell pursues in White Heat. Professor Pursell explores technology not as a succession of gadgets and gizmos but as a study of how society's values are embedded in them. Written to accompany a major television series and illustrated with some surprising and fascinating photographs, his book reveals a new layer of meaning to the devices, tools and machines which have been developed throughout human history.
