Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication describes the theory and philosophy of military planning as practiced by the U.S. Marine Corps. The intent is to describe how we can prepare effectively for future action when the future is uncertain and unpredictable. In so doing, this publication provides all Marines a conceptual framework for planning in peace, in crisis, or in war. This approach to planning is based on our common understanding of the nature of war and on our warfighting philosophy of maneuver warfare as described in Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication (MCDP) 1, Warfighting.

Book Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 5 10 Marine Corps Planning Process August 2020

Download or read book Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 5 10 Marine Corps Planning Process August 2020 written by United States Governmen Us Marine Corps and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This United States Marine Corps manual, Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 5-10 Marine Corps Planning Process August 2020, was first published in January 2000 as MCWP 5-1. Since that time, Marine Corps forces at all echelons of command have used the Marine Corps Planning Process (MCPP) to conduct the range of military operations. The use of design over the last decade suggests that design is more than conceptual planning which establishes aims, objectives, and intentions. A more critical role of design is to promote understanding of the current situation as a basis for broad solutions. While design establishes the nature of the problem, the inclusion of a design methodology in this revision aids commanders, staffs, and planners in determining the problem set and a framework for solving them. The publication's design methodology reflects a belief that sufficient complexity can exist at all levels of warfare and across the conflict continuum to include tactical situations that will require an understanding of the set of problems that hinder movement from the current state to the desired state of an operational environment. Among all critical factors bearing on military operations, time is defining. The MCPP helps Marines win the time fight through a promotion of intuitive understanding, commander's intent, and the use of task and purpose when operating inside an established paradigm. Another time aid is the center of gravity techniques used to determine which of the actions that address a problemset will be decisive. These visions of decisiveness inform the convergence of combat powerthrough main and supporting efforts and resource priorities. The publication focuses primarily on commanders with staffs; however, any Marine required to plan operations should know the planning process well enough to determine the problem, envision a desired state, and develop options for achieving that state. This publication supersedes MCWP 5-10, Marine Corps Planning Process, dated 24 August 2010. MCWP 5-10 implements North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2014, NATO Formats for Orders and Designation of Timing, Locations, and Boundaries.

This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Corps Warfare Publication MCWP 5-10 (Formerly MCWP 5-1) Marine Corps Planning Process 2 May 2016 Marine Corps Warfighting Publication (MCWP) 5-1, Marine Corps Planning Process, was first published in January 2000. Since that time, the planning process has been used by Marine Corps forces at all echelons of command to conduct a range of military operations. The planning associated with these diverse operations has demonstrated the fundamental soundness of the process. Practical application has also revealed that portions of the planning process and MCWP 5-1 require clarification or elaboration to enhance comprehension and utility. Among these, design has emerged as a term requiring further emphasis. A fundamental responsibility of command, design is present not only in planning, but also throughout the planning-execution-assessment continuum. This publication emphasizes the importance of understanding the problem, the environment, the enemy, and the purpose of an operation. This awareness is fundamental to the first step in planning--formerly named mission analysis--and has, accordingly, been renamed problem framing to better convey its purpose and importance. Moreover, the publication includes a discussion of battlespace, centers of gravity, commander's intent, and commander's critical information requirements as part of design, versus its former heading of commander's battlespace area evaluation. Notice: This is a paperback book version of the "Marine Corps Warfare Publication MCWP 5-10 (Formerly MCWP 5-1) Marine Corps Planning Process 2 May 2016". Full version, All Chapters included. Book excerpt: MCDP 1 WARFIGHTING Since Fleet Marine Force Manual 1, Warfighting, was first published in 1989, it has had a significant impact both inside and outside the Marine Corps. That manual has changed the way Marines think about warfare. It has caused energetic debate and has been translated into several foreign languages, issued by foreign militaries, and published commercially. It has strongly influenced the development of doctrine by our sister Services. Our current naval doctrine is based on the tenets of maneuver warfare as described in that publication. Current and emerging concepts such as operational maneuver from the sea derive their doctrinal foundation from the philosophy contained in Warfighting. Our philosophy of warfighting, as described in the manual, is in consonance with joint doctrine, contributing to our ability to operate harmoniously with the other Services.

It also provides historical and environmental information that supports planning and training for combat in built-up areas

Book Operational Culture for the Warfighter

Download or read book Operational Culture for the Warfighter written by Barak A. Salmoni and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Operational Culture for the Warfighter: Principles and Applications" is a comprehensive planning tool and reference. It addresses the critical need of the Marine Corps to provide operationally relevant cultural teaching, training, and analysis. This book links social science paradigms to the needs of Marines using an applied anthropology approach. The text explains how fundamental features of culture (environment, economy, social structure, political structure, and belief systems) can present challenges for military operations in different cultures around the globe. Drawing on the research and field experiences of Marines themselves, "Operational Culture for the Warfighter" uses case studies from past and present cross-cultural problems to illustrate the application of cultural principles to the broad expeditionary spectrum of today's and tomorrow's Marine Corps. This new and expanded second edition of "Operational Culture for the Warfighter" extends the concepts of the original edition to the Marine Corps Planning Process. New sections on transportation and communication, law and ethics, and culture and planning will assist both military planners and operators with the practical aspects of incorporating culture into military decision-making.

Book Corps Business

Download or read book Corps Business written by David H. Freedman and published by HarperBusiness. This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the best-run enterprise in the world? It just may be the Marine Corps. Far from being the hidebound, autocratic entity that most people imagine, the Corps has created a stunningly nimble, almost freewheelingly adaptive organization. The result: Though often faced with extraordinarily dynamic and complex challenges, the Marines get the job done every time. Their secret? Don't think boot camp. Instead, the Marines have refined a wide-ranging system of management practices that have undergone continuous evolution under the most demanding conditions conceivable. Armed with these straightforward principles, any organization can achieve the high-impact responsiveness demanded by today's ultra-competitive, fast-changing business environments. In Corps Business, author David H. Freedman brings these principles--and their application to the business world--to light in clear, fascinating form. Freedman brings you along to observe, firsthand the high-speed Marine environment, where you'll take part in urban combat practice maneuvers, sit in on mission planning sessions, spend time on a "floating invasion party," and participate in a live-fire combat exercise. Along the way, you'll tap the wisdom of scores of Marines from three-star generals to grunts. Here are some examples: Managing by end-state--Tell people what needs to be accomplished and why, and leave the details to them. The 70-percent solution--It's better to decide quickly on an imperfect plan than to spend time considering every angle and roll out a perfect plan when it's too late. Authority on demand--While retaining a strong management pyramid, encourage people even at the lowest levels to make any and all decisions necessary to accomplish the mission when management guidance isn't at hand. Anyone facing entrenched or predatory competitors, short time frames, chaotic markets, and obstacles in every direction, has a simple choice: Learn to move fast, change on the fly, and inspire employees--or die. The Marines are here to help. With a foreword by Gen. Charles C. Krulak, Thirty-first Commandant of the United States Marine Corps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is about winning in combat. Winning requires many things: excellence in techniques, an appreciation of the enemy, exemplary leadership, battlefield judgment, and focused combat power. Yet these factors by themselves do not ensure success in battle. Many armies, both winners and losers, have possessed many or all of these attributes. When we examine closely the differences between victor and vanquished, we draw one conclusion. Success went to the armies whose leaders, senior and junior, could best focus their efforts-their skills and their resources-toward a decisive end. Their success arose not merely from excellence in techniques, procedures, and material but from their leaders' abilities to uniquely and effectively combine them. Winning in combat depends upon tactical leaders who can think creatively and act decisively.

Book Commandant s Planning Guidance

Download or read book Commandant s Planning Guidance written by General David H. Berger and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commandant's Planning Guidance (CPG) provides the 38th Commandant's strategic direction for the Marine Corps and mirrors the function of the Secretary of Defense's Defense Planning Guidance (DPG). It serves as the authoritative document for Service-level planning and provides a common direction to the Marine Corps Total Force. It also serves as a road map describing where the Marine Corps is going and why; what the Marine Corps force development priorities are and are not; and, in some instances, how and when prescribed actions will be implemented. This CPG serves as my Commandant's Intent for the next four years. As Commandant Neller observed, "The Marine Corps is not organized, trained, equipped, or postured to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving future operating environment." I concur with his diagnosis. Significant change is required to ensure we are aligned with the 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS) and DPG, and further, prepared to meet the demands of the Naval Fleet in executing current and emerging operational naval concepts. Effecting that change will be my top priority as your 38th Commandant. This CPG outlines my five priority focus areas: force design, warfighting, education and training, core values, and command and leadership. I will use these focal areas as logical lines of effort to frame my thinking, planning, and decision-making at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC), as well as to communicate to our civilian leadership. This document explains how we will translate those focus areas into action with measurable outcomes. The institutional changes that follow this CPG will be based on a long-term view and singular focus on where we want the Marine Corps to be in the next 5-15 years, well beyond the tenure of any one Commandant, Presidential administration, or Congress. We cannot afford to retain outdated policies, doctrine, organizations, or force development strategies. The coming decade will be characterized by conflict, crisis, and rapid change - just as every decade preceding it. And despite our best efforts, history demonstrates that we will fail to accurately predict every conflict; will be surprised by an unforeseen crisis; and may be late to fully grasp the implications of rapid change around us. The Arab Spring, West African Ebola Outbreak, Scarborough Shoal standoff, Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, and weaponization of social media are but a few recent examples illustrating the point. While we must accept an environment characterized by uncertainty, we cannot ignore strong signals of change nor be complacent when it comes to designing and preparing the force for the future. What is abundantly clear is that the future operating environment will place heavy demands on our Nation's Naval Services. Context and direction is clearly articulated in the NDS and DPG as well as testimony from our uniformed and civilian leadership. No further guidance is required; we are moving forward. The Marine Corps will be trained and equipped as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness and prepared to operate inside actively contested maritime spaces in support of fleet operations. In crisis prevention and crisis response, the Fleet Marine Force - acting as an extension of the Fleet - will be first on the scene, first to help, first to contain a brewing crisis, and first to fight if required to do so. The Marine Corps will be the "force of choice" for the President, Secretary, and Combatant Commander - "a certain force for an uncertain world" as noted by Commandant Krulak. No matter what the crisis, our civilian leaders should always have one shared thought - Send in the Marines.

This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navy Warfare Publication NWP 5-01 Navy Planning Dec 2013 This publication is in essence about the concepts of decisionmaking, and it provides the basic process for planning Navy operations. The principles contained within can be applied by any echelon-on a ship, in a strike group, or in a task force. The process can be applied by a commander facing a conventional threat such as another nation's navy or in a conflict dominated by asymmetric tactics and an unconventional adversary. Moreover, the principles contained within are applicable to a variety of other evolutions, some not necessarily operational in nature, in which a commander may be involved. Though this publication likely will find its greatest utility with a Navy component commander (NCC), Navy numbered fleet commander (NFC), or a joint force maritime component commander (JFMCC), it will refer to Navy organizations in general, regardless of level of command. Furthermore, the Navy planning process (NPP) is compatible with joint planning guidelines and procedures of JP 5-0, Joint Operation Planning as well as the United States Marine Corps' planning process (MCPP) as reflected in MCWP 5-1, Marine Corps Planning Process. This publication alerts the reader when the NPP deviates from either of these two planning processes. Thus, Navy commands following the process can effectively integrate into and operate as part of a joint force.
