Book Fighting Prosaic Messages

Download or read book Fighting Prosaic Messages written by Henry C Amoroso Jr and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part historical fiction, part memoir, part philosophy of education, this book begins with a story about a womans immigration into the U.S. and how three of her generations struggled in the U.S. school system. The book ends with an analysis of why many students fail in school, and what we can do about it. Through story and analysis, this book offers a critique of the U.S. education systemin 3 parts. Part one imagines what the immigration experience was like in the past, and reads like historical fiction. Part two looks at the ensuing three generations in the present, and reads like a memoir. Part three gleans lessons from the story as a whole for what we can do better in the future. In the historical fiction part, a Sicilian woman named Rose emigrates to the U.S. at the turn of the twentieth century. Knowing no English and illiterate but armed with a moral intelligence, she struggles in this strange world of the free, rubs shoulders with some of the great thinkers of her day, and discusses the nature of education with them. Shes one of the many prosaic heroes history books and schools sometimes forget. In the memoir part, Roses son Henry, the authors father, drops out of school in the eighth grade to help his single mom by selling newspapershe never thought he was smart enough for school anyway. His son Henry Jr. goes all the way in school to obtain a PhD, but struggles to find a voice along the way. Henry Jr.s son Justin was seemingly born with an expressive voice, but in his shuffle to conform to the school system, almost lost it. In these 3 cases, we see 3 types of students who often fail in school in general. In the final analysis part, the book reflects on these prosaic cases to understand why so many U.S. students fail. The theme that emerges parallels the traditions of Rousseau, Dewey, and Montessori: students at heart are good and educators are most effective when they treat them as such; students learn best by doing, and this includes moral doing; and students become intrinsically motivated to learn if allowed to think critically, creatively, and to find their voices. If democracy depends on an informed citizenry, the questions this book raises about school failure are critical to the future of our nation . J.A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marina Frances had been in love with Jettson Frame from the moment she had lain eyes on him eleven years earlier. But Jettson had never noticed for drooling all over Flame, who had noticed him for the same length of time it took her to dump him and marry another man. Then Jettson had moved out of the state and Marina hadn’t seen nor heard of him in six years. Plus, she had gotten on with her life to the point of becoming engaged to marry her attorney boyfriend of a year and a half and the marriage was six weeks away. Now Jettson was back in her life busily chasing after her divorced Cousin Flame while trying to foist her off onto his nerdy Cousin Berry: all just like old times. How was Marina supposed to cope with her imminent marriage knowing she was still in love with Jettson, a man who didn’t know she was alive in that way and a man who could never seem to get her name straight? Nervously Marina marched down the aisle on her father’s arm Monday evening after her succession of bridesmaids. Her mother had been seated at the front of the church by one of Harvey’s groomsmen, an impatient look on her face as if the wedding wouldn’t take place fast enough for her. Harvey’s parents had been seated across the aisle from her, Harland Jr. and Amy Lennox looking on at her entrance with interest. But Marina barely took note of any of them as her gaze fixed on her fiancé as he stood tall and proud before the Reverend Ansley with Ty Wallerstein officiating as his best man. It was only a wedding rehearsal and Marina was a total mess, her heart thudding in her chest like a jackhammer. Harvey was a good man—her mother had been right about that—and he loved her very much. Marina would be a fool not to marry him in light of his newfound status at his law firm. By the same token, how could she possibly marry him knowing she was in love with another man? What guarantee did she have that she would learn to love him after they were married when it didn’t work for her Aunt Nadine three times? And how did Marina know that Harvey wouldn’t be able to detect by her marital frigidity that she didn’t love him in the true sense of the word? She should be telling Harvey right now that she could not marry him because she was not in love with him. But by the same token, she wanted to marry him because she would be a fool to let a great catch like him go. She was torn wanting him, but for all the wrong reasons. Marina fought to get a grip on herself as she and her father neared the altar. Perhaps if she recalled the playful banter that had taken place between her and her bridesmaids out in the lobby before the rehearsal had started. Simone joking about how eldest son Drancy had gotten in a fight with a neighboring child that day and how Azar had beat his behind when he’d arrived home that evening.... Gale telling her something about Darnell having returned home from his weekend business and their plans to get together later on that evening.... Shawna telling her something about being voted employee of the month at one of her jobs.... And Flame laughing about how Jettson had taken her to Six Flags Over Georgia for the day on Sunday and how she had gotten him to spend all of his money on her.... So, what else was new...?! Yet as her mind lingered on thoughts of him, Marina had to fi ght the urge to scream. JETTSON FRAME! He was the cause of all of her problems, the cause of all of her doubts concerning Harvey. Marina just did manage to pull herself together as her father deposited her at Harvey’s side. She forced warmth to her expression as she met the expectant look he turned on her. “...And at this point, I will say, ‘Who gives this woman to be with this man?’ And you will say...?” the Reverend Ansley prompted her father. “...I do,” answered Orin Francis. “And then, you will give your daughter to Harvey and tur

Download or read book Role Play written by Clara Drummond and published by FSG Originals. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Role Play is a fresh satire narrated by a wealthy young woman in Rio on the verge of a class-consciousness awakening. Vivian is a curator, not just at her gallery gig in Rio de Janeiro, but in every aspect of her life. Her apartment has designer armchairs. Her wallet is Comme des Garçons. Everything is selected and arranged, even her lovers and friends. In Vivian’s world, everything comes in excess, including her own caustic selfawareness. As she informs us, “I’m a misandrist and a misogynist,” but she is fond of gay men, “the one type of human you can properly get along with as equals.” Role Play examines the superabundances of Brazilian elites— their art, ethics, and monied ambivalence in the face of social inequality, machismo, and violence. As sharp and sparkling as broken champagne flutes, Clara Drummond’s prose is seductively frank and unflinching in its depiction of wealth’s power to warp the self.

The intruders, not finding what they seemingly expected, leave without further incident. But the baffling, traumatic events overwhelm Cannon who dies in his sleep later that night. Now Russell is left to ponder the meaning of the attack, what to do with the poet's unfinished, problematic memoir and, perhaps most importantly, how to reconstruct and move forward with his own life.Hearing of the disturbing circumstances of Cannon's death, an Italian writer, Marina Vezzoli, invites Russell to recuperate at her villa in Tuscany. But what at first seems like a generous invitation slowly reveals itself to be a calculated offer. As Russell's stay in Italy lengthens, he begins to realize that the people in his life are using or manipulating him, most of all the poet's New York publishers who, against the dying poet's wishes, are trying to acquire his unfinished manuscript. Looming over everything is the long and fascinating legacy of Villa Guidi, where during Word War II a Jewish family hid in the subterranean floors, later undergoing a conversion to Catholicism. In an echo of this dramatic history, Russell is forced to undergo a conversion of his own in order to find redemption and meaning in his life.
