Book Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia

Download or read book Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia written by Vladislav Shevchenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to document in depth the history of lunar and planetary cartography in Russia. The first map of the far side of the Moon was made with the participation of Lomonosov Moscow University (Sternberg Astronomical Institute, MSU) in 1960. The developed mapping technologies were then used in preparing the “Complete Map of the Moon” in 1967 as well as other maps and globes. Over the years, various maps of Mars have emerged from the special course “Mapping of extraterrestrial objects” in the MSU Geography Department, including the hypsometric map of Mars at a scale of 1:26,000,000, compiled by J.A. Ilyukhina and published in 2004 in an edition of 5,000 copies. A more detailed version of this map has since been produced with a new hypsometric scale. In addition, maps of the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars have been compiled for the hypsometric globe of Mars. Relief maps of Venus were made in 2008, 2010, and 2011, and hypsometric maps of Phobos and Deimos at a scale of 1:60,000 were published in 2011. History of Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia provides detailed information on the compilation of this diverse range of maps and will be of interest to all lunar and planetary cartographers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the present book has been to provide an outline - the first of its kin- of the history of the human efforts to map the topography of the surface of our satellite, from the days of pre-telescopic astronomy up to the present. These efforts commenced modestly at the time when the unaided eye was still the only tool at the disposal of men interested in the face of our satellite; and were con tinued since for more than three centuries by a small band of devoted friends of the Moon in several countries. Many of these were amateur astronomers, and almost all were amateur cartographers; though some highly skilled in their art. The reader interested in the history oflunar mapping between 1600 and 1960 will find its outline in the first chapter of this book; and can follow the way in which the leadership in the mapping of the Moon, the cradle of which stood in Italy, passed successively to France, Germany, and eventually to the United States. All efforts described in this chapter were wholly superseded by subsequent devel opments since 1960, largely motivated by logistic needs of a grand effort which cul minated with repeated manned landings on the Moon between 1969-1972- a feat which will remain for ever one of the glories of our century.

Book excerpt: Philip's Moon Map is a large-format folded map of the near side of the Moon. It has been specially drawn for Philip's by Dr John Murray, a research lecturer at the Open University, who is an expert on the lunar surface. The map is not only a highly accurate and clear representation of the Moon, but is also a practical guide for lunar observers.More than 500 physical features - craters, seas, mountain ranges, peaks, valleys and rilles (elongated depressions) - are named and indexed, and the landing sites of unmanned and manned spacecraft are also marked. The observer can thus readily identify objects seen through binoculars or a telescope, or select targets for a programme of observation. The chart includes a small map of the far side of the Moon (never visible from the Earth) and is accompanied by a practical guide to lunar observing. This concise and informative text describes the various types of feature to observe, illustrated with drawings and photographs. Tips are given as to the best point in the lunar cycle to observe the most interesting of these features. Guidelines on drawing or photographing the Moon are also included.Colour artworks explain the Moon's orbit, and why its phase (the proportion of the Moon that is visible from Earth) changes during the course of a month. Also explained, with the help of illustrations, are the path of the Moon during the course of the year and why lunar and solar eclipses occur.

Book excerpt: "The Moon: A Full Description and Map of its Principal Physical Features" by Thomas Gwyn Elger is mostly intended for the use of lunar observers, but it is hoped it may be acceptable to many who have a general interest in astronomy. Through maps and the scientific knowledge available in the 1800s, Elger does a very good job of trying to present the known data on the moon with an open and unbiased mind. The book also gives a detailed description of the features of the moon you can see from earth.

Book A Treatise on Moon Maps

Download or read book A Treatise on Moon Maps written by Francis J. Manasek and published by . This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Treatise on Moon Maps aims to contextualize Moon maps and to create a space for them in the history and philosophy of cartography. Such a space has been wanting. Although not a linear chronological history of lunar mapping, this book is the most comprehensive and detailed examination of printed Moon maps derived from visual telescopic observation (1610-1910), making it a valuable resource.Recognizing that not all Moon maps were made for the same reasons, the maps are separated into several functional categories making it easier to explore their broader cultural and social contexts as well as treating them as discrete cultural artifacts with distinct voices.A Treatise on Moon Maps will appeal to astronomers, both professional and amateur, as well as to historians. Institutions and individual map collectors will find the breadth and depth of illustration, with the correlative text, particularly useful.
