Book America the Owner s Manual

Download or read book America the Owner s Manual written by Bob Graham and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, Americans fed up with the political process vented that frustration with their votes. Republicans nominated for president a wealthy businessman and former reality show host best known on the campaign trail for his sharp rhetoric against immigration and foreign trade. Democrats nearly selected a self-described socialist who ran on a populist platform against the influence of big money in politics. While it is not surprising that Americans would channel their frustrations into votes for contenders who pledge to end business as usual, the truth is that we don’t have to pin our hopes for greater participation on any one candidate. All of us have a say—if we learn, master and practice the skills of effective citizenship. One of the biggest roadblocks to participation in democracy is the perception that privileged citizens and special interests command the levers of power and that everyday Americans can’t fight City Hall. That perception is undoubtedly why a 2015 Pew Charitable Trusts survey found that 74 percent of those Americans surveyed believed that most elected officials didn't care what people like them thought. Graham and Hand intend to change that conventional wisdom by showing citizens how to flex their citizenship muscles. They describe effective citizenship skills and provide tips from civic experts. Even more importantly, they offer numerous examples of everyday Americans who have used their skills to make democracy respond. The reader will see themselves in these examples of citizens who chose to be victorious participants rather than tranquil spectators in the arena of democracy. By the end of the book, you will have new confidence that citizen participation is the lifeblood of America -- and will be ready to make governments work for you, not the other way around.

Book Transforming the Global Biosphere

Download or read book Transforming the Global Biosphere written by Elliott Maynard and published by Watchmaker Publishing. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming the Global Biosphere is based on the author's presentations to the World Future Society, and was written at the suggestion of Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and former UN Assistant Secretary General, Dr. Robert Muller. The author feels strongly that, in order to reverse the presently destructive impacts of Human Technology on the Global Biosphere, a Transformative Revolution in Human Consciousness must first take place. Such a "Magnificent Revolution" would take the form of Twelve Futuristic MetaStrategies...each of which would represent a Key SocioEcological Paradigm in itself. Each chapter of the book is developed around a MetaStrategy, providing examples of the Major Problems, as well as Innovative Solutions for reversing these Destructive Trends...through selected applications of Unique Alternative Technologies and Strategies. Dr. Maynard's Twelve MetaStrategies for Planetary Management are essentially a set of enlightened, yet effective, tools for Creative Thinking and Action. They are designed to promote environmentally sustainable future scenarios for the maximum benefit for Humans, their Planetary Homeworld, and for the Generations Yet to Come. In spite of the mounting evidence of environmental damage and disturbance to our Natural Planetary Systems, Dr. Maynard contends that solutions to these problems are available through insightful applications of Alternative Technologies, which can provide Clean Renewable Energy, Efficient Non-Polluting Transportation, Hi-Energy Nutrition, and Ecologically Appropriate Lifestyles for everyone on Earth. To achieve such a meaningful and lasting transformation, the author feels we must move rapidly and efficiently beyond the entanglements of 20th Century Thinking, and blaze adventurous new pathways into the Future. Together we must find the courage to explore the promising applications of alternative leading-edge Technologies, which often exist outside the boundaries of the Mainstream Scientific Thought. -- Elliott Maynard Blog.

Book Improving Government Performance

Download or read book Improving Government Performance written by John J. DiIulio and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2001-06-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clinton administration's National Performance Review of the federal government (also called the Reinventing Government Initiative) is the eleventh effort this century to improve the executive branch and reform the federal service. Most previous efforts have faltered. How can present and future recommendations avoid the same fate? This book provides practical and timely guidance to those trying to improve government performance. The focus of successful attempts, the authors argue, should be sustained evolution, not bursts of invention aimed at sweeping transformation. Specific proposals address ways to change government over the long term, ways to streamline bureaucracy, attract more resourceful and innovative workers, and make agencies more responsive to their customers, the citizens.

This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declaration of Statesmanship is a one-of-a-kind American Government high school course. It unites history, philosophy, and civics in a dynamic blend of narrative and argument. The authors of the course continually endeavor to match the thoughtfulness and elegance of the multiplicity of original sources and fundamental texts found in this course which were pivotal in the founding of the nation. The course has three primary parts. In the first, the text explores the ideals and principles of this nation as expressed in The Declaration of Independence. It examines the philosophy and religious teaching that influenced the founders in their decision to write the Declaration and leave Great Britain. Then the text considers the Declaration in detail and shows how The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution establish a government which fulfills the Declaration's ideals. The second part of the course investigates how some of our greatest statesman were guided by these same ideals when dealing with the difficult questions of slavery and civil rights. From even before the founding there was a conflict between the ideas of liberty and the existence of slavery. This part of the course reviews how the founding generation addressed the problem of slavery present in the new nation and how future statement have used those same ideals in their struggles. America needs great statesmen, but it has an even greater need, a need of people capable of living as free men. In the third part, the course uses Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America to analyzes the peculiarities of America which allowed this experiment in democracy to be so successful, and what is needed to maintain the freedom and self-rule which we have inherited. Declaration of Statesmanship has been designed as a one semester course in American Government for high school students. The program is made up of 4 different components which give students everything they need. Teacher's Manual: The Teacher's Manual contains lesson plans and instructions for the course as well as answers for the questions, quizzes and tests for the coursebook. This course is the perfect tool to inform future generations of their rights, duties and responsibilities as American citizens living in the civic state that is the American Government.

Book Saving America

Download or read book Saving America written by Mark Aesch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National polling indicates that for the first time in American history, people believe their children will not be as well off as they are. The primary reason for this? The lack of performance by government. The public sector receives trillions of American taxpayer dollars every year and yet because of its seeming inability to run effectively, government is not delivering the level of service the people are paying for. In Saving America, Mark Aesch tells us where government -- at the local, state, and federal level -- is falling short and offers a coherent, non-partisan, Seven-Step plan for rebuilding our nation's public agencies. The book is not a political broadside or a theoretical academic tract; it's an accessible guidebook that helps local citizens, elected officials, and administrators make American government great again. The Seven Steps process will lead to measurable gains for organizations large and small, including school systems, municipal governments, entire states, and even the federal government itself.
