Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manitoba is more than one of Canada's three prairie provinces. Encompassing 649,950 square kilometres, its territory ranges from Canadian Shield to grassland, parkland, and subarctic tundra. Its physical geography has been shaped by ice-age glaciers, while its human geography reflects the influences of its various inhabitants, from the First Nations who began arriving over 9,000 years ago, to its most recent immigrants. This fascinating range of geographical elements has given Manitoba a distinct identity and makes it a unique area for study. Geography of Manitoba is the first comprehensive guide to all aspects of the human and physical geography of this unique province. Representing the work of 47 scholars, and illustrated with over 200 maps, diagrams, and photographs, it is divided into four main sections, covering the major areas of the province's geography: Physical Background; People and Settlements; Resources and Industry; and Recreation. As well as studying historical developments, the contributors to Geography of Manitoba analyse recent political and economic events in the province, including the effect of federal and provincial elections and international trade agreements. They also comment on future prospects for the province, considering areas as diverse as resource management and climatic trends.

Book excerpt: This new and substantially revised edition of Heritage Planning: Principles and Process offers an extensive overview of the burgeoning fields of heritage planning and conservation. Positioning professional practice within its broader applied and theoretical contexts, the authors provide a firm foundation for understanding the principles, history, evolution, debates, and tools that inform heritage planning, while also demonstrating how to effectively enact these processes. Few published works focus on the practice of heritage planning. The first edition of this book was developed to fill this gap, and this second edition builds upon it. The book has been expanded in scope to incorporate new research and approaches, as well as a wide range of international case studies. New themes reflect the emerging recognition that sustainability, climate resilience, human rights, social justice, and reconciliation are fundamental to the future of planning. Heritage Planning is indispensable reading, not only for professionals who transform the built environment, but for anyone who wants to understand the ideas and practices of heritage planning and conservation. For the benefit of student readers, twelve chapters—designed to accommodate the academic semester—are augmented with concise summaries, key terms and definitions, questions, and learning objectives.

Book Waterfowl Habitat Preservation

Download or read book Waterfowl Habitat Preservation written by Philip J. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important element of Canada's wildlife heritage is migratory birds. Migratory birds, especially waterfowl, depend on wetlands for food, nesting, brood habitat, protective cover and staging areas. Recent concern has been expressed over loss of an estimated 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) of wetland habitat in the prairies alone.(Canada, Dept. of Environment, 1980 p. 21). Although direct and indirect agricultural practices have a substantial impact on waterfowl habitat, reasons for the decline of habitat are numerous. In the Minnedosa pothole region of southwestern Manitoba, the problem of declining waterfowl habitat can be partially attributed to efforts by individual landowners to improve their standard of living. Often, farmers derive economic benefits by increasing their cultivated land base at the expense of wetlands (Colpitts, 1974). Other explanations for declining waterfowl habitat include: 1. Drought 2. Physical adjustments to watercourses 3. Urban expansion 4. Incre.
