No sólo no se consideraban en toda su dimensión las vanguardias como un fenómeno continental, sino que parecía incluso haber caído en el olvido lo que la eclosión simultánea de esos movimientos juveniles, inquietos e iconoclastas trajo de nuevo a las artes y a la cultura de América Latina. Hoy se sabe que estas expresiones tuvieron un perfil propio que las distingue y que fueron una parte sustancial del movimiento internacional de las vanguardias. Casi un siglo después de su inicio en nuestras latitudes, se admite por fin que las vanguardias dejaron una huella profunda, perdurable, en todas las artes del continente a lo largo del siglo XX. Desde hace un par de décadas se han multiplicado las revisiones y las relecturas de este extraordinario momento de la cultura latinoamericana. Lo decisivo son las nuevas miradas con que se encara el material rescatado, un material que esperaba ser leído e interpretado, tarea que con acierto emprende "Manifiestos... de manifiesto". Celebremos entonces la feliz y original iniciativa de reunir a un grupo de estudiosos que reflexionan sobre los manifiestos como un género y que los analizan en tanto textos con un centro gravitacional propio. Los enfoques y acercamientos son plurales, no desdeñan la sugerente mirada comparatista y muestran tanto las rupturas y transgresiones que ofrecen estos textos como las continuidades con la tradición. Se trata de un libro que sin duda abre caminos para nuevos estudios sobre los movimientos de las vanguardias hispanoamericanas, un campo que está lejos de haberse agotado.

Daut examines the legacy of Vastey’s extensive writings as a form of what she calls black Atlantic humanism, a discourse devoted to attacking the enlightenment foundations of colonialism. Daut argues that Vastey, the most important secretary of Haiti’s King Henry Christophe, was a pioneer in a tradition of deconstructing colonial racism and colonial slavery that is much more closely associated with twentieth-century writers like W.E.B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, and Aimé Césaire. By expertly forging exciting new historical and theoretical connections among Vastey and these later twentieth-century writers, as well as eighteenth- and nineteenth-century black Atlantic authors, such as Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, William Wells Brown, and Harriet Jacobs, Daut proves that any understanding of the genesis of Afro-diasporic thought must include Haiti’s Baron de Vastey.

During the three and a half decades of Francoist dictatorship, these exiles held that the Republic, not Francoism, represented the authentic culture of Spain. In this environment, as Sebastiaan Faber argues in Exile and Cultural Hegemony, the Spaniards' conception of their role as intellectuals changed markedly over time. The first study of its kind to place the exiles' ideological evolution in a broad historical context, Exile and Cultural Hegemony takes into account developments in both Spanish and Mexican politics from the early 1930s through the 1970s. Faber pays particular attention to the intellectuals' persistent nationalism and misplaced illusions of pan-Hispanist grandeur, which included awkward and ironic overlaps with the rhetoric employed by their enemies on the Francoist right. This embrace of nationalism, together with the intellectuals' dependence on the increasingly authoritarian Mexican regime and the international climate of the Cold War, eventually caused them to abandon the Gramscian ideal of the intellectual as political activist in favor of a more liberal, apolitical stance preferred by, among others, the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset. With its comprehensive approach to topics integral to Spanish culture, both students of and those with a general interest in twentieth-century Spanish literature, history, or culture will find Exile and Cultural Hegemony a fascinating and groundbreaking work.

During this time a framework has emerged characterized by the corporatization of publishing, a frictional relationship between Mexican literature and global book markets, and the desire of Mexican writers to break from dominant models of national culture. In the course of this analysis, Ignacio M. Sánchez Prado engages with theories of world literature, proposing that “world literature” is a construction produced at various levels, including the national, that must be studied from its material conditions of production in specific sites. In particular, he argues that Mexican writers have engaged in a “strategic Occidentalism” in which their idiosyncratic connections with world literature have responded to dynamics different from those identified by world-systems or diffusionist theorists. Strategic Occidentalism identifies three scenes in which a cosmopolitan aesthetics in Mexican world literature has been produced: Sergio Pitol’s translation of Eastern European and marginal British modernist literature; the emergence of the Crack group as a polemic against the legacies of magical realism; and the challenges of writers like Carmen Boullosa, Cristina Rivera Garza, and Ana García Bergua to the roles traditionally assigned to Latin American writers in world literature.
