Book excerpt: The Battle of Mamusa reflects the grievous event in the Western Transvaal border culture context that contributed profoundly to the dissolution of the last functioning Korana polity. The narrative presented in this work is exceptional for at least two reasons: Firstly, for the thoughtful manner in which the intriguing concept of metaphors is applied in this study of historical ethnography cum ethnohistory. Secondly, for the skilful way in which the author relates the battle of Mamusa to how present-day Korana and neo- Khoisan communities, in a new context, are relating to their future in a post-1994 constitutional dispensation. Book The Musical Instruments of the Indigenous People of South Africa

Download or read book The Musical Instruments of the Indigenous People of South Africa written by Percival Kirby and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed collection of information about the playing and making of the instruments of indigenous peoples' in South Africa. Percival Kirby was a musician and ethnomusicologist and for many years head of the music department at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Between 1923 and 1933 he undertook more than nine expeditions as well as many shorter excursions around South Africa. He was hosted by local chiefs and taught to play the instruments he encountered. He managed to purchase many of them, and this collection, now known as the Kirby Collection, is housed at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. First published as Musical Instruments of the Native Races of South Africa in 1934, the book was the culmination of research trips undertaken by Percival Kirby. It became the standard reference on indigenous South African musical instruments. The bulk of the material is concerned with detailed information on the making and playing of each instrument, and is accompanied by a large number of musical examples. This third edition contains an introduction by Mike Nixon, Head of the Ethnomusicology and African Music at the South African College of Music, and new reproductions of the valuable historic photographs, but leaves Kirby's original text unchanged.

Book Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts 2 volumes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts 2 volumes written by Timothy J. Stapleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two volumes introduce the history of colonial wars in Africa and illustrate why African countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan continue to experience ethnic, political, and religious violence in the early 21st century. This sweeping study examines the wars of colonial conquest fought in Africa during the 19th and early 20th centuries. From Britain's efforts to wrest control of the Sudan from military leader Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, to Italy's decisive defeat at the Battle of Adowa in Ethiopia, to Leopold II's brutal reign over the Belgian Congo, the work surveys the devastation reaped upon the continent by colonization and illustrates how its combative influence continues to resonate in Africa today. Written by scholars in the fields of history and politics, this complete reference includes entries on wars, campaigns, rebellions, battles, leaders, and organizations. The work delves into key historical periods including the "Scramble for Africa" (ca.1880 to 1910); early European colonial wars in Africa, such as the Dutch in the Cape and the Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique; and African rebellions against the early colonial state in the 1890s and early 1900s. Entries feature prominent events and personalities as well as lesser-known occurrences and players.

Book The Labour History of South Africa in Source Materials

Download or read book The Labour History of South Africa in Source Materials written by Elias Mpofu and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation and settlement of the Cape Colony from the mid-seventeenth century heralded the introduction of European capital into the socio-economic life of southern Africa. It further brought about hitherto unprecedented levels of exploitation of the region's resources and people in a region that had previously relied on subsistence, agricultural- pastoral economies. The study considers four aspects of the period: merchant capitalism, agrarian capitalism, mining-industrial capitalism and the imperial factor. It aims to enhance understanding of South African labour history and the colonial history of southern and central Africa more generally, demonstrating that colonial policies tried and tested in South Africa, were frequently applied in the British colonies to the north.
