Book excerpt: Neutron diffraction techniques should lend themselves to the study of the copper-manganese alloy system. First, the fact that the sign of the coherent neutron amplitude of manganese is opposite to that of copper would allow super-lattice lines due to atomic ordering in the crystal lattice to be easily observable; whereas, with X-rays the closeness of the atomic numbers of these elements would result in relatively faint super-lattice lines upon ordering. Second, copper being diamagnetic and manganese being paramagnetic, it is of interest to study by neutron diffraction any magnetic structures which might arise, and the variation of paramagnetic scattering with composition. X-ray and metallographic studies of the system have been reported by several investigators. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity properties of the system have been studied by Valentine and Becker.

Book excerpt: From x-ray and neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements, the PtMn phase with the CuAuI type structure is found to exhibit anti-ferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments with spin quantum number 4/2 for the Mn atoms and 0 for the Pt atoms. The moments of nearest-neighbour Mn atoms in (001) planes are anti-parallel to each other, and the direction of the moments changes from parallel to c in alloys with 50 at. % Pt and less, to perpendicular to c with more than 50 at. % Pt. Neel temperatures are observed in the range from 840 to 970 K. At lower temperatures the alloys show weak ferromagnetism which is believed to result from canting of the moments. (Author).

This technique was first made possible by the advent of the nuclear reac tor and has, since then, undergone many refinements. The developments in this field of research have, we felt, necessitated the making of a comprehensive compilation of the published thermal neutron papers. The large number of titles collected in this book, as well as their diversity and their yearly distribution, reflects the continued contribution of the neutron probe to our understanding of physical systems. This bibliography is an updated and improved version of the one first published by us in March of 1973 under a similar title. Many of the omissions and inconsistencies of the first edition, such as occurred, for example, in the initialing of authors' names, have been corrected. The literature search has been carried back to 1932, the year when the existence of the neutron was experimentally confirmed. Several additional journals have also been searched and brought up to date together with those listed in our first publication. The number of entries is now 8543, an increase of 65 per cent relative to the first edition.
