Download or read book The Juggler and the Magic Harp written by Robert Collins and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ragged man visits the houses of the nobility. He entered O'Donnel's house unknown and asked the musicians to play for him. Then he took the harp from them and played far superior music with the harp between his feet, and he played the music with his toes. He insulted O'Donnell and was surrounded by armed men, but he made some of the armed men assume his features, and they were attacked and killed. He restored them to life by getting the doorkeeper to rub their upper palates with an herb. The beggar headed off to the earl's house, went to bed, and began snoring heavily. When he met the household, he was given a book that was turned upside down and began reading it. He began playing chess with some of the best chess players in the area and beat them with only half of the pieces on the board. The juggler plays various tricks on the household. He then moves onto the lawn and opens his bag. He throws a rope into the sky. A cat and mouse appear from the bag and race up the rope. The mouse rides on the cat's back while the cat tries to unseat it. A hound and hare are released and race up the rope with the hare on the hound's back. The hound fails to dislodge the hare. The boy then goes up the rope but fails to carry out the juggler's instructions. He is restored to life by the juggler who departs.

Book excerpt: Harps, instruments of ancient origin have joined humankind throughout its history: the gems among the instruments in the empires of antiquity, the accompanying instruments of the songs performed by medieval monks, wandering minstrels and gallant knights, favourites of burghers, and the queen of instruments, as many say. They served as the decorative or symbolic components of artistic representations arcing over times. We do not only get familiar with the varieties, the development and the most excellent virtuosos of harps, but we are also given a comprehensive view of their historical and philosophical background, the role they played in different eras during which, these instruments of peculiar and mysteriously attractive sound "always represented joy, comfort and beauty”.

Book Goethe Revolution and renunciation 1790 1803

Download or read book Goethe Revolution and renunciation 1790 1803 written by Nicholas Boyle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the second volume of Goethe: The Poet and the Age, Nicholas Boyle covers the most eventful and crowded years of Goethe's life: the period of the French Revolution, which turned his life upside down, and of the German philosophical revolution which ushered in the periods of Idealismand Romanticism. It was also a period dominated by two intense personal relationships: with Schiller, Weimar's other great poet, philosopher, and dramatist, and with Christiana Vulpius, the mother of his son. Goethe was a poet of supreme intelligence and sensitivity living through political andintellectual changes which have shaped the modern world. The transition into modernity is the theme of this volume: Goethe's harrowing experiences of the Revolutionary wars; the explosion of new ideas in philosophy and literature which he absorbed and adapted and which for ten years made Jena theintellectual capital of Europe; the political upheaval initiated by Napoleon which destroyed the Holy Roman Empire in which Goethe had grown up, and with it the cultural role he had envisaged for Jena and Weimar. Boyle vividly narrates both the large-scale events and the personal dramas of thisexciting time, to give lucid accounts of important thinkers whom English readers have hitherto found inaccessible, and to analyse in new ways Goethe's works of the period, notably Wilhelm Meister, The Natural Daughter, and Faust.

Download or read book The Occult Arts of Music written by David Huckvale and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occult traditions have inspired musical ingenuity for centuries. From the Pythagorean concept of a music of the spheres to the occult subculture of 20th-century pop and rock, music has often attempted to express mystical states of mind, cosmic harmony, the demonic and the divine--nowhere more so, perhaps, than in the music for films such as The Mephisto Waltz, The Devil Rides Out, Star Trek, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Omen and The Exorcist. This survey explores how such film music works and uncovers its origins in Pythagorean and Platonic ideas about the divine order of the universe and its essentially numerical/musical nature. Chapters trace the influence of esoteric Freemasonry on Mozart and Beethoven, the birth of "demonic" music in the 19th century with composers such as Weber, Berlioz and Liszt, Wagner's racial mysticism, Schoenberg's numerical superstition, the impact of synesthesia on art music and film, the effect of theosophical ideas on composers such as Scriabin and Holst, supernatural opera and ballet, fairy music and, finally, popular music in the 1960s and '70s.
