Book The Sonata

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Schmidt-Beste
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-03-10
  • ISBN : 1107310547
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book The Sonata written by Thomas Schmidt-Beste and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a sonata? Literally translated, it simply means 'instrumental piece'. It is the epitome of instrumental music, and is certainly the oldest and most enduring form of 'pure' and independent instrumental composition, beginning around 1600 and lasting to the present day. Schmidt-Beste analyses key aspects of the genre including form, scoring and its social context - who composed, played and listened to sonatas? In giving a comprehensive overview of all forms of music which were called 'sonatas' at some point in musical history, this book is more about change than about consistency - an ensemble sonata by Gabrieli appears to share little with a Beethoven sonata, or a trio sonata by Corelli with one of Boulez's piano sonatas, apart from the generic designation. However, common features do emerge, and the look across the centuries - never before addressed in a single-volume survey - opens up new and significant perspectives.

Download or read book The Italian Madrigal written by Alfred Einstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 3. This monumental three-volume work on the Italian madrigal from its beginnings about 1500 to its decline in the 17th century is based on the research of 40 years, and is a cultural history of the development of Italian music. Mr. Einstein, renowned musicologist, supplies a background and a sense of proportion to the field: he gives the right order to the single composers in the evolution fo the madrigal, attaches new values to old names, and places in the foreground the outstanding, but until now rather neglected, personality of Cipriano de Rore. His work is not, however, purely musicological; his object is to inquire into the functions of secular music in Italian life during the Cinquecento, and to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of that great century in general. Translated from the German by Oliver Strunk, Roger Sessions and Alexander H. Krappe. Originally published in 1948. Book The Amateur Flautist

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugh Evans
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2014-10-28
  • ISBN : 1783065494
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book The Amateur Flautist written by Hugh Evans and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people learn the flute. Most give it up as an adult because they cannot easily find anyone to play with, and a lack of practice makes it less enjoyable to play. This book is aimed at helping such people. The first chapter diagnoses why most amateur flautists give up playing, and sets out a number of remedies. The most important is finding other musicians with whom to play, whether in an orchestra, or more importantly, in chamber groups. The author explores how you might set about finding players for chamber music, and how you might set about finding the music itself. The second chapter gives guidance about the music for all the principal combinations of chamber groups which involve the flute. The most significant ones are flute and piano, two to four flutes, trio sonatas with another melody instrument and piano, and the wind quartet. The author describes the principal works for each of these groups, which are fun and manageable for amateurs, rather than listing everything that is available. Listed are the significant works that are available for free on the internet. The third chapter suggests a short practice regime to counteract the deficiencies in the playing of most amateur flautists, which are poor tone and tuning. Practicing half an hour a few times a week should do the trick.

Download or read book Use Trouble written by Michael S. Harper and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Michael S. Harper has written poetry that speaks with many voices. His work teems with poetry configured as awe, poetry as courtship, and poetry as elegy and homage. Infused with tales and riddles, sass and satire and surprise, Harper’s poetry takes the form of psalms, jazz experiments, soft serenades, and radical provocations. In Use Trouble, his first major collection since Songlines in Michaeltree, Harper renews poetry as the art of taking nothing for granted. In three groups--"The Fret Cycle," "Use Trouble," and "I Do Believe in People"--he draws on his seemingly inexhaustible resources to paint, sing, sympathize, and sorrow. Here are his tributes to his father and family, his irrepressible playfulness, and his lifelong romance between poetry and music.
