Download or read book Churchill and the Politics of War 1940 1941 written by Sheila Lawlor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-05-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a reappraisal of Churchill's role as Britain's wartime leader, and in particular reconsiders his response to the dominant strategic challenges of his first year as prime minister. Based on a detailed examination of the public and private records of both political and military leaders, Dr Lawlor analyses what were often conflicting views and reactions to events. She suggests that Churchill's own position reflected the uncertainties, differences and vacillations of his colleagues, and that he was a far more sophisticated and astute politician than he allowed himself to appear. The first part of the book considers the various reactions among the British leadership to the fall of France and the Battle of Britain. The second and third parts analyse the discussions and decisions which led to British action in the Middle East and to sending military support to Greece.

Download or read book Everything Was Better in America written by David Welky and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a counterpart to research on the 1930s that has focused on liberal and radical writers calling for social revolution, David Welky offers this eloquent study of how mainstream print culture shaped and disseminated a message affirming conservative middle-class values and assuring its readers that holding to these values would get them through hard times. Through analysis of the era's most popular newspaper stories, magazines, and books, Welky examines how voices both outside and within the media debated the purposes of literature and the meaning of cultural literacy in a mass democracy. He presents lively discussions of such topics as the newspaper treatment of the Lindbergh kidnapping, issues of race in coverage of the 1936 Olympic games, domestic dynamics and gender politics in cartoons and magazines, Superman's evolution from a radical outsider to a spokesman for the people, and the popular consumption of such novels as the Ellery Queen mysteries, Gone with the Wind, and The Good Earth. Through these close readings, Welky uncovers the subtle relationship between the messages that mainstream media strategically crafted and those that their target audience wished to hear.

Download or read book Language Poets Use written by Winifred Nowottny and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs Nowottny's chief aim in this 'valuable book which could serve as a useful introduction to practical criticism' is to inquire what it is that makes the language of poetry poetic. The book grows out of the leading trends today in ideas about language and the way is works but to the maters discussed Mrs. Nowottny brings a keen mind of her won and considerable powers as a literary critic. Stressing the continuity of poetry with other uses of language she shows how under the control of the poet's purpose everyday language contributes to the achievement of the most complex and profound effects, and she illustrates these effects with a wealth of examples.

Download or read book The Great Cat and Dog Massacre written by Hilda Kean and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, 400,000 cats and dogs were massacred in Britain, their corpses heaped up outside veterinarians offices. Fear of the imminent German blitz led the government to urge pet owners to spare their animal companions so that they would not suffer in the bombing raids. Hilda Kean s gripping narrative of this little-known event includes tales of smuggling pets into bomb shelters, trading bits of cat food on the black market, and preemptively killing thousands of pets at the start of the war to save the food supplies in England. Kean is able to show vividly how pets were an important part of British wartime experience. She pays close attention to animals, both symbolic and actual, arguing that after the pet massacre, human-animal bonds became stronger and closer. In the process of telling this history, Kean necessary complicates the picture of World War II as the good war fought by a nation of good, animal-loving people. Her close use of primary materials (diaries, personal sources, contemporary newspapers, collective public reports on daily life, etc.) gives palpable reality to the animals and their fate at this time. This forgotten aspect of Britain s history makes us rethink accepted accounts of the War and shows the ways in which animal and human histories are inextricably linked. We are also constrained to rethink our assumptions about ourselves and the animals with whom we share our homes."
