Book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics in a Seasonally Closed Estuary in Northern California

Download or read book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics in a Seasonally Closed Estuary in Northern California written by Kathryn M. Hewett and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissolved oxygen (DO) field in the Russian River estuary (RRE) was investigated during periods of mouth closure. The RRE is a bar-built, drowned-river-valley estuary located in northern California. Similar to other estuaries in Mediterranean climates, the mouth of the RRE closes episodically. The probability of closure is highest from September to November, when river flow is seasonally low, which allows sediment deposited by wave-driven processes to build a sand bar across the estuary mouth. Separation from the ocean leads to strong vertical stratification in the estuary, which impacts estuarine circulation and water properties. Of concern are the low oxygen concentrations observed in bottom waters during prolonged inlet closures. Based on 5 years of seasonal monitoring data, the pattern of oxygen distribution observed during periods of inlet closure is described and related to physical structure. The role of vertical mixing in controlling oxygen levels is then examined using a vertical 1-dimensional mass balance model. A strong pycnocline suppresses mixing, which is estimated from a vertical salt balance. The pycnocline thus also suppresses the diffusive flux of oxygen to the bottom layer, so that even low oxygen demand will eventually deplete dissolved oxygen in the water column. A one-dimensional mass balance model yields values for net ecosystem metabolism rates through the water column, showing net oxygen uptake beneath the pycnocline and net oxygen production in the photic zone above and within the pycnocline. Given the absence of mixing in the pycnocline, oxygen levels vary strongly between day and night – and most strongly during closure events when high levels of oxygen and chlorophyll are observed within the pycnocline.

Book A Survey of Dissolved Oxygen and Other Water Quality Characteristics of the Lower Fraser River 1975 81

Download or read book A Survey of Dissolved Oxygen and Other Water Quality Characteristics of the Lower Fraser River 1975 81 written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the spring of 1975, 1976, 1980, and 1981, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity, and oxidation-reduction potential were measured at 45 sites and selected depths in the lower Fraser River downstream of New Westminster. The sampling periods were chosen to coincide with the period of downstream migration and estuarine rearing phase in the life cycle of Pacific salmon and with the onset of freshet conditions. This report provides the results of the sampling, comparing dissolved oxygen measurements in the North and South Arms of the river and off Annacis Island.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for lnformation and Numerica/ Data Analysis and Synthesis (C/NDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficia! to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After fi ve years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of ali concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and App/ied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. Ali back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 21 (thesis year 1976) a total of 10,586 theses titles from 25 Canadian and 219 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.

Book Estuarine Water Quality Management

Download or read book Estuarine Water Quality Management written by Wilfried Michaelis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, the awareness of the increasing pollution of rivers, estuaries and the sea with its associated impact on these ecosystems, its effect on organisms, food-chains, water supply and finally on man himself is growing. Estuaries form a link between the limnetic and marine environments, characterized by a variety of complex processes. Most of these phenomena are not yet sufficiently understood, making efficient water quality management a difficult task. The volume has two main objectives: to present the latest information on current estuarine research and to elaborate fundamentals and criteria for planners and decision-makers in water quality management.

Book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics and Fish Community Composition in Dense Emergent Plants at Lakes Istokpoga and Kissimmee Florida

Download or read book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics and Fish Community Composition in Dense Emergent Plants at Lakes Istokpoga and Kissimmee Florida written by Aaron Joseph Bunch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissolved oxygen exhibited substantial spatial and temporal variability at small scales (i.e., meters and hours). Centrarchid mortality experiments revealed that mortality was higher when fish were not allowed access to the surface. Stress-tolerant fishes dominated the habitats sampled. Overall, I found higher DO concentrations, higher stress-moderate fish densities, a lower probability of hypoxia, and lower centrarchid mortality in cattail habitats when compared to other habitats sampled in this study. The differences in the factors evaluated in this study (i.e., DO, mortality, and fish metrics) were probably influenced by the structural differences and specific habitat characteristics associated with the individual plant species.

Book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics in the Dunnville Marsh on the Grand River Ontario Canada

Download or read book Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics in the Dunnville Marsh on the Grand River Ontario Canada written by Aseel S. Kaiser and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most important environmental factors necessary to sustain aquatic life. The Southern Grand River is characterized with extensive marshes. This study focuses on the Dunnville Marsh in the Southern Grand River. The spatial and temporal variation in dissolved oxygen was studied in the Dunnville Marsh and the Grand River over a one year cycle during 2007 to 2008. Dunnville Marsh exhibited little influence on the oxygen regime of the river. The Grand River; however, could influence the oxygen regime in the marsh during the spring when waters are high but exerts little influence during the rest of the year. There were no great differences in DO between the wetland and the river during the high water spring melt period; however notable differences occurred in the summer and fall. Oxygen stable isotopes and diel O2 measurements showed that ecological factors probably were influencing the DO cycle in Dunnville Marsh, whereas both ecological and weather factors influenced the cycle in the Grand River.
