Download or read book Low Temperature Properties of Selected Materials written by Dorothea M. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a bibliography of the work reported in the literature on the effects of low temperature on the properties of structural materials. Some of the newer areas of cryogenic technology such as superconducting machinery involve environments which may subject the components to temperature as low as 4 K. Exposure of structural materials to such low temperatures affects their properties. This bibliography contains 963 references published between 1950-1976, arranged in chronological/alphabetical order. Combined material/property indexes are provided. (Author).
Download or read book The Metallurgy Behavior and Application of the 18 percent Nickel Maraging Steels A Survey written by A. M. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report resulted from a survey of users and manufacturers of maraging steels, Government agencies, research institutions, and published literature. It presents the technical status of the 18-percent nickel maraging steels in detail and brings together a large body of knowledge with regard to the metallurgical and engineering aspects of maraging steels. Since such steels were first announced in 1959, they have become highly important in aerospace, defense, and industrial work. The requirements of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have given impetus to their development, and research now underway is expected to result in further improvements and applicability. The NASA Office of Technology Utilization sponsored this report as part of its program to disseminate information on technological developments which appear to be useful for general industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the combination of tensile properties and toughness that can be obtained with the maraging steels is higher than can be achieved with other steels by simple heat treatments, there is considerable interest in using the maraging steels for critical components such as rocket motor cases, pressure vessels, and aircraft forgings. This report includes information on the tensile, compressive, shear, bearing, dynamic modulus, impact, bend, fatigue, creep, and rupture properties of the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels and on the effect of temperature on these properties. Data for the properties of sheet, bar, and forgings, as well as data illustrating the effect of cold rolling, variation in the heat treatment, and elevated-temperature exposure also are presented. Data on the effect of specimen orientation, which are also included, indicate that the ductility and toughness of specimens designed to evaluate the properties in the short transverse direction are somewhat lower than in the other directions. The high strength and toughness that can be obtained in the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels make them attractive for certain critical applications that require these properties. The fabrication characteristics, weldability, and simple heat treatment are other advantages of these steels. (Author).

Download or read book Introduction to Aerospace Materials written by Adrian P Mouritz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural materials used in airframe and propulsion systems influence the cost, performance and safety of aircraft, and an understanding of the wide range of materials used and the issues surrounding them is essential for the student of aerospace engineering.Introduction to aerospace materials reviews the main structural and engine materials used in aircraft, helicopters and spacecraft in terms of their production, properties, performance and applications. The first three chapters of the book introduce the reader to the range of aerospace materials, focusing on recent developments and requirements. Following these introductory chapters, the book moves on to discuss the properties and production of metals for aerospace structures, including chapters covering strengthening of metal alloys, mechanical testing, and casting, processing and machining of aerospace metals. The next ten chapters look in depth at individual metals including aluminium, titanium, magnesium, steel and superalloys, as well as the properties and processing of polymers, composites and wood. Chapters on performance issues such as fracture, fatigue and corrosion precede a chapter focusing on inspection and structural health monitoring of aerospace materials. Disposal/recycling and materials selection are covered in the final two chapters. With its comprehensive coverage of the main issues surrounding structural aerospace materials,Introduction to aerospace materials is essential reading for undergraduate students studying aerospace and aeronautical engineering. It will also be a valuable resource for postgraduate students and practising aerospace engineers. - Reviews the main structural and engine materials used in aircraft, helicopters and space craft in terms of their properties, performance and applications - Introduces the reader to the range of aerospace materials, focusing on recent developments and requirements, and discusses the properties and production of metals for aerospace structures - Chapters look in depth at individual metals including aluminium, titanium, magnesium, steel and superalloys
