Book Low rise Buildings on Fill

Download or read book Low rise Buildings on Fill written by Andrew Charles and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarcity and cost of suitable land is leading increasingly to the development of sites where there are deep deposits of fill. Occasionally cases are reported where serious failures have occurred. These reports should not obscure the fact that many buildings have been successfully built on fill; they emphasise the importance of understanding the behaviour of fills, identifying potential hazards and adopting measures that will ensure successful development of these sites. Part 2 recommends that construction on existing filled areas should be preceded by careful investigation of the site which should be both appropriate and adequate. The site investigation may indicate that ground treatment is required before construction to improve the load-carrying properties of the fill, reducing or forestalling the effects of the unexpected. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed. Part 3 presents guidance for the specification and control of fills which are to be placed so that they can safely support low-rise buildings without the occurrence of damaging movements. Such fills are described as foundation fills. When new fill is to be placed, careful selection of the material and controlled placement should ensure that the fill forms an adequate foundation material. Part 3 is particularly relevant to building developments where relatively small volumes of fill are being placed (typically less than 50 000 m3) and consequently the resources available for design, testing, etc are quite limited. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual for civil and structural engineers aims to simplify as much as possible a complex subject which is often treated too theoretically, by explaining in a practical way how to provide uncomplicated, buildable and economical foundations. It explains simply, clearly and with numerous worked examples how economic foundation design is achieved. It deals with both straightforward and difficult sites, following the process through site investigation, foundation selection and, finally, design. The book: includes chapters on many aspects of foundation engineering that most other books avoid including filled and contaminated sites mining and other man-made conditions features a step-by-step procedure for the design of lightweight and flexible rafts, to fill the gap in guidance in this much neglected, yet extremely economical foundation solution concentrates on foundations for building structures rather than the larger civil engineering foundations includes many innovative and economic solutions developed and used by the authors’ practice but not often covered in other publications provides an extensive series of appendices as a valuable reference source. For the Second Edition the chapter on contaminated and derelict sites has been updated to take account of the latest guidelines on the subject, including BS 10175. Successful construction learns from this experience which becomes embodied in principles of application. Though materials and techniques change, various elements have to perform the same function. 'Principles of Element Design' identifies all the relevant elements and then breaks these elements down into all their basic constituents, making it possible for students to fully understand the given theory and principles behind each part. As all building projects are subject to guidance through the Building Regulations and British Standards, this book gives an immediate reference back to relevant information to help practitioners and contractors identify key documents needed.
