Book The St Martin s Guide to Writing

Download or read book The St Martin s Guide to Writing written by Rise B. Axelrod and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 1093 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides instruction in college level rhetoric and writing. It offers readings, a research manual, a handbook and supports a range of approaches to teaching and learning, including collaboration, visual rhetoric, personal writing, writing about literature, writing in the community and the workplace, field research, portfolios, oral presentations, essay exams, and ESL. It contains step-by-step guides to writing specific kinds of essays -- remembering events, writing profiles, explaining a concept, finding common ground, arguing a position, proposing a solution, justifying an evaluation, speculating about causes, and interpreting stories. Because so much college writing requires strong argumentation skills, four of the assignment chapters focus on argumentative writing, and a separate strategies chapter covers theses, reasons and support, counterarguments, and logical fallacies. Three full chapters on research give students useful strategies not only for conducting field, library, and Internet research, but also for evaluating sources; deciding whether to quote, paraphrase, or summarize; avoiding plagiarism; and documenting sources. The authors have included 39 readings by well-known authors and various "fresh" voices, including 12 students, providing well-written examples of the different types of essays and papers that students might be asked to complete.

Romantic relationships have the ability to infuse our lives with the magic of intimacy and connection. But for many of us, that magic is fleeting–over and over, our relationships don't last, or if they do, they fail to make us happy. We find ourselves chasing unavailable love, sublimating our needs in service to others, or trying to save our partners from themselves, all the while abandoning the one who needs us most–ourselves. If you find yourself struggling to let go after a relationship ends, or you keep hitting the same wall in dating and relationships with emotionally unavailable people, this is not a sign that you are broken. It is a sign that somewhere along the way, you learned to sacrifice yourself in order to be loved. In Becoming the One, spiritual leader and visionary founder of the Rising Woman community Sheleana Aiyana offers a roadmap for transforming your relationship patterns to end the cycle of self-abandonment and move into the light of self-discovery. You'll learn to: • build a secure, loving relationship with yourself. • connect with your inner child. • challenge your core beliefs about love. • set self-affirming boundaries. • discover and celebrate your true desires. • recognize red and green flags. Sheleana's revolutionary lessons, based on wisdom from the traumas of her past and years of guiding thousands of women around the world in her internationally acclaimed "Becoming the One" program of spiritual and therapeutic healing practices, teach you to embody the qualities you are seeking in others so that you can become "the one" for yourself. You'll learn how to trust your body, make peace with your past, and clear the path for healthy, conscious love–one that returns the authority to you to choose how to live and whom to love. The desire for love is wired into the very fibers of our being, but before you can create rewarding bonds with others, first you must stand wholeheartedly in self-acceptance. Becoming the One is an invitation to find your way home to yourself.

Book Vandalized Lovemaps

Download or read book Vandalized Lovemaps written by John Money and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the criminal justice system they are termed perverted. On the streets they are called kinky. The attitude toward people who practice aberrant sexual activity is almost always molded by prejudice or fear. Even after Alfred Kinsey's research ascertained the statistical prevalence of variant sexual activity in the population at large, the scientific establishment - and the public - have been slow to accept the study of "unacceptable" eroticism. Dr. Money, who coined the word "lovemap" a decade ago, defines a lovemap as our subconscious pattern of erotic yearnings and desire. Each of us has a distinctive lovemap, as different and individual as a fingerprint. "Vandalized" lovemaps are those that have gone awry during development, becoming paraphilic - literally, "away from what is expected in love." Paraphilia manifests itself in behavior that is, according to the ideological criterion of everyday orthodoxy, unorthodox. Vandalized Lovemaps is the first study of its kind, for it is a study of paraphilic development which is not retrospective, as is usually the case, but prospective. In seven cases, John Money and Margaret Lamacz record, from childhood onward, factors in the evolution of a paraphilic lovemap, studying biographical background, practices and subsequent treatments.
