Book excerpt: Apprenticed to the infamous Necromancer of Boston while on the brink of death, Daniel Macavoy has seen a lot of upheaval in his life since that fateful day. Rescued from an abusive father and the monster he was once enslaved by, Daniel has struggled with the traumas that scarred his heart and mind. Yet with the love and support of his found family, Daniel has become stronger than he ever imagined. A capable sorcerer, he's been entrusted with the ancestral home of the Salvatores, the legendary site of the Massacre that brought an end to the centuries-long Blood Wars between the Salvatores and the Macavoys. The huge Mansion is a testament to old-school magic, high sorcery, and comes with a history almost as impressive as the enigmatic fae warrior who calls the gardens home. A member of the nearly extinct High Court Sidhe, Rory remembers when humans climbed down from trees and learned to stand upright. After eons spent hand in hand with his twin, Cian, Rory was struck down by a near-fatal sword blow; he slept for centuries only to be resurrected by the Necromancer of Boston. Once awakened, Rory lost his twin to a mortal prison, sentenced for heinous crimes committed in an effort to save Rory while he slept. Once worshipped as a god, Rory Brennan is learning what it means to exist in a modern mortal world. Rory finds that for the very first time, true love has found its way into his immortal heart. Daniel and Rory grow closer, love springing to life in the narrowing space between them. But their nascent bond is threatened by strangers attempting to break into the Mansion, and by the ever-growing danger to Rory's twin Cian, locked in the depths of Blackguard Prison. With the danger increasing from all sides, Daniel and Rory struggle to balance surviving with falling in love. A dragon with a growth spurt isn't helping matters, and his mentor's watchful eye makes things both more awkward and potentially lethal. LOVE SPRINGS ETERNAL is the fifth book in the bestselling Beacon Hill Sorcerer series and should not be read as a standalone.

Book excerpt: A 40th anniversary reissue of the national bestselling author's hilarious first novel that memorably mixed food, heartbreak, and revenge into a comic masterpiece—now with a new foreword by Stanley Tucci. • "Touching and funny.... Proof that writing well is the best revenge." —Chicago Tribune Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. In this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally... reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter. Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Book Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast

Download or read book Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast written by James Valladares PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clergy abuse scandal has posed the greatest threat to the traditional understanding of the Catholic priesthood since the Protestant Reformation. Now, as then, the deadliest attacks are coming from within the Church. In an attempt to improve a system that allowed a small minority of the clergy to violate children and ameliorate the gross negligence of some bishops who recycled these predators, the American bishops instituted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in 2002. It is, unfortunately, doing the Church more harm than good. In Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast, Fr. James Valladares shows how justice and charity have been violated by some bishops in dealing with accused priests. He examines the pertinent canons that guide the Churchs judicial system and finds that these are often ignored or wrongly applied. He provides true cases that highlight the injustice of the process and the agony of priests who have been subjected to the charters draconian mandates. The Church has incurred tremendous financial losses because of settlements rising from both legitimate and false claims. Her image has been marred by the secular media, which has taken advantage of the crisis. Even so, we often fail to understand how trivial these are in comparison to the damage done to the priesthood by the enactment of the charters policies. This is the most pressing issue that the bishops need to address.

Steve was attending college, and had been kicked out of a class, so he went into Brother Christianson's class. One day, he pulled Steve aside and said, "You think you're tough, don't you?" Steve answered, "Yeah." Brother Christianson asked, "How many pushups can you do?" Steve replied, "Two hundred." "Can you do three hundred in sets of ten?" Brother Christianson asked. Steve said, "Sure." Brother Christianson said, "Good! I need you to do this Friday." When class started, Brother Christianson had a box of donuts and asked the first girl, "Cynthia, do you want a donut?" Cynthia said, "Yes." Brother Christianson asked, "Steve, would you do ten pushups so Cynthia can have a donut?" Steve said, "Sure," and did a quick ten. He put a donut on Cynthia's desk. Book Modern Poetry

  • Author : Lloyd Constantine
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2012-10-15
  • ISBN : 1479710393
  • Pages : 127 pages

Download or read book Modern Poetry written by Lloyd Constantine and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Poetry contains poetry that refl ects a litt le of my childhood days (Beds, for example, relates my experience with the growing of fl owers back in the sixties but melds in with recent occurrences), and includes life stories of friends and those around me. More recently the sett ings for the poetry include locations to which I have traveled in Asia (Hong Kong); Europe (France, Italy); and North America (USA and Canada). In Christmas Shopping, I try to bring the readers to various countries in their searches for items endemic to their locations. I did not physically go to these stores but my research led me to them. Th e purpose, here, is to have the readers relate to their local Department store. I believe it delivers their personal involvement and help to take them to the location with which they are familiar or to which they can go and experience. Some of the poems are writt en in the fi rst person but they do not necessarily refl ect my experiences but are told from a personal perspective adding a provocative fl avor and a skew to fantasy. Modern Poetry seeks to elicit emotions that speak to the readers senses to make them want to read it again and again and, indeed, to commit some of the poems to memory. I believe Day to Day will resonate with people from many walks of life as it depicts the rat races that seem to control their lives. Modern Poetry has representations in areas of climate change, politics, banking, love, war, friendship, geography, social life and psychology. Th e writing style does not conform to the any classic poetry conventionfor example sonnet(14 lines with the a,b,b,a,a,b,b,a,c,d,e,c,d,e form). Instead, I simply write to portray my thoughts, not even employing iambic pentameter. Of course there may be times when it appears in parts of poems but it is purely coincidental and was not intended. I simply decided not to follow any conventional rules. I am, however, quite fascinated with the limerick and Modern Poetry contains two limericks, the only form that was followed at all. On several occasions, I write in response to turmoil in my life at the time. Th e sense that I want to portray in these is that I experience the same day to day trials and tribulations, hopes and hopelessness, trepidation and courage, anxiety and calm that a large percentage of people do. Night, I Cease to feel, Midnight Madness, Solitude and All for You all fi t into these categories. Th ere are others that refl ect what I see and hear of other people and I fi nd that the life experiences are common to many groups from diverse cultures and practices. Many of my poems have interpersonal relationships, particularly male female or more accurately, intimate relationships, at their core. You Made Me You and Let Our Light Shine are prime examples. Th e fullness of colour in this book, especially the illustrations, should give the reader a sense of presence at the scene and make for a lifelike experience. As I have presented my thoughts in various areas of moods, emotions and spirit the works have been presented in groups. Th is will allow a reader who wants to enjoy a certain type of reading to fi nd them all together making a reading session more relaxed. I believe that there will be persons with whom a poem or two will resonate. If you are one of them, then take the opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings with someone you would like to partake in that moment by sending the poem for that person to read and enjoy. I understand that my style of writing may be new to readers who are used to the conventional classic forms. I know, though, that aft er reading ten to fi ft een pieces, they will become accustomed to this style, and see it more akin to storytelling which they will fi nd to be quite enjoyable.

Book excerpt: India has always been a region of multiple cultures and ethnicities comprising a multifaceted, colorful and genuinely diverse civilization of innumerable peoples, beliefs and languages. The political domination of Muslim dynasties from Central Asia from the Ghaznavid conquests onwards led to "Persian" being grafted into the Indian subcontinent as the official language of governance and high culture. As classical Persian culture fell into abeyance during the Middle Ages and the Islamic West disintegrated into chaos, India fostered a Persian cultural renaissance of unparalleled literary achievement by émigrés to India as well as by Indians themselves. However, from the beginning of the seventeenth century. "Urdu" began to form around the lower echelons of society as a common tongue to enable communication between the myriad ethnicities of the Mughal Empire, ultimately restricting Persian to a refined language of culture and courtly life in the Mughal court and becoming a vibrant and dynamic language in its own right thus becoming the first literary language with a substantial original contribution from Indians since ancient Sanskrit. Presented in this book are proses, minstrelsy and parnassus straight from the kings emperors, saints, prisoners and outlaws of the Mughal court and jurisdiction, as well as the beau monde and aristocracy of the Mughal India.
