Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its roots in the devotional verse of the early Christian church and the long lyric poems of the Irish bards, Irish poetry has a rich and robust tradition both of engagement and self-reflection. It has grappled long with politics and has provided the most eloquent response to Ireland's turbulent history, mediating and mitigating histories of loyalty and loss; it has soaked itself in the Irish landscape and Celtic myth; it has encompassed religion, so much a part of Ireland's cultural heritage. At the same time Irish poets have given their own original slant to everyday experience and affairs of the heart.Thematically organized and spanning many centuries, this selection also features a section of Gaelic poetry in translation, notably excerpts from the 18th-century epic masterpiece, Brian Merriman's The Midnight Court.

Book Irish Love

  • Author : Andrew M. Greeley
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2002-03-15
  • ISBN : 1429974532
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Irish Love written by Andrew M. Greeley and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2002-03-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the enchanting chronicles of the fabulous Nuala Anne McGrail and her spear-carrying husband Dermot, bestselling author Andrew M. Greeley takes them once again to Ireland for another thrill-packed adventure. Back on the Emerald Isle, Nuala and Dermot soon get the feeling that someone is out to get them. They find themselves dodging multiple explosions, and someone starts shooting at Nuala while she is water-skiing in the cold Atlantic. Meanwhile, the handsome parish priest, Father Jack, has given Dermot the diary of a young Chicago newspaperman. Written in the year 1882, the diary tells in horrendous detail an intriguing story of a mass murder and a trumped-up trial in which one of Ireland's greatest heroes was accused of the murders without a shred of evidence. These two stories, ancient and modern, soon get mixed up, and they make for an utterly fascinating tale of murder, betrayal, and redemption with Nuala and her magical powers at the center of it all. Andrew Greeley not only tells us a riveting tale of adventure and derring-do, he gives us a picture of modern-day prosperous Ireland and the engaging and, of course, sometimes villainous people who live there. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book Gender and History in Yeats s Love Poetry

Download or read book Gender and History in Yeats s Love Poetry written by Elizabeth Cullingford and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first full-length feminist treatment of Yeats shows how his experience of changes in the balance of power between men and women led him to expand the formal possibilities of love poetry. As a white, male, middle-class, Protestant citizen of the British Empire, with an acknowledged debt to canonical English writers, Yeats belonged to the dominant tradition. As a colonized Irishman, however, he was acutely conscious of repression and exclusion. This detailed examination of Yeats's work re-situates a private genre in a public context, relating the formal conventions of love poetry to the histories of the emancipation of women and the decolonization of Ireland. Yeats's complex position in history and culture, his long obsession with a "New Woman," his unstable gender identity, and his constant remaking of traditional lyric forms, combine to differentiate his love poetry from that of misogynist practitioners of the genre.

Book excerpt: According to the Kama Sutra, the erotic handbook written two thousand years ago, when the wheel of ecstasy is in motion “there is no textbook at all, and no order.” Indian Love Poems is a unique gathering of poems from across more than two and a half millennia that attempts to catalog the disordered ecstasies of love, ranging from the Kama Sutra and earlier works up to present-day India and the poets of the Indian diaspora. Indian Love Poems features works from the classical languages of Sanskrit and Tamil and such later languages as Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali, and English. Emerging from many Indian cultures and eras, the poems collected here reflect a variety of erotic and spiritual passions, and celebrate the powerful role of desire–both male and female–in the intricate dance of existence. From the twelfth-century female poet Mahadeviyakka to the twentieth-century Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore to such contemporary poets as Kamala Das and Vikram Seth, this glittering tapestry of lyric voices beautifully and sensually evokes the transfiguring force of love.
