Book excerpt: Kristi McCormick loves two things: swimming and mysteries. Swimming is easy. She can just go down to the beach and jump in the water. To become a PI like Kinsey Millhone in her favorite Sue Grafton mysteries, however, is a whole other story. When a rich reclusive heiress turns up dead in her Montecito mansion, Kristi must clear her first client, a poor ESL teacher, of murder. Unfortunately, her client seems to be hiding something. Worse, there are few other suspects, and her growing feelings for the attorney who hired her pits her against the DA she's dating. To solve the mystery, Kristi must uncover how love and money factor into the case, and into her own life. The Cota Club books tell the stories of five best friends, who grew up together on Cota Street in Santa Barbara. Love and Money tells Kristi McCormick's story. It is the first of the Cota Club books, and a prequel to Carla Deville's story in The Offering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am eight years older now. It had never occurred to me that I am advancing in life and experience until, in setting myself to recall the various details of the affair, I suddenly remembered my timid confusion before the haughty mien of the clerk at Keith Prowse's. I had asked him: "Have you any amphitheatre seats for the Opera to-night?" He did not reply. He merely put his lips together and waved his hand slowly from side to side. Not perceiving, in my simplicity, that he was thus expressing a sublime pity for the ignorance which my demand implied, I innocently proceeded: "Nor balcony?" This time he condescended to speak. "Noth-ing, sir." Then I understood that what he meant was: "Poor fool! why don't you ask for the moon?"

Book It s Time for My Story

Download or read book It s Time for My Story written by Carol T. Williams and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-10-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soap opera story, the only mass-public form of continuing narrative today, is oral culture for our electronic era. Carol Williams' It's Time for My Story is an examination of soap opera sources, structure, and response, particularly from the critical viewpoints of psychology, both archetypal and empirical, and popular culture, specifically narratology and feminism, that uncover the true nature of the genre. First, Williams traces the development of soap opera from its immediate source in radio and television as well as from its fundamental source in age-old myth and storytelling. Then she analyzes the content and form that together make up the structure of soap opera. Finally, she looks at what soaps mean to watchers and in the process debunks many myths about soap opera (for instance, the myth that soap opera, like all television drama, is merely commercial, produced formulaically by advertisers; Williams argues that soap opera is not only a commercial product but also a popular art form derived from the wellspring of culture and folk story). She also argues that it is a form which has been depreciated because it is historically a woman's medium. Discussions with writers, creators, and fans are included throughout. Recommended to scholars and students of media, drama, popular culture, and women's studies.
