Download or read book Lost Farmsteads written by Kathryn Roberts and published by CBA Research Reports. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the upland and marginal landscapes of Wales are characterised by an abundance of abandoned houses and farmsteads. These remains are the tangible evidence that for many hundreds of years successive communities occupied and exploited rural areas that are now largely depopulated. This book presents evidence from a detailed field study project into the deserted rural settlements throughout Wales - exploring settlement morphology, monastic upland exploration, medieval and post-medieval settlement development and change, vernacular building traditions and environmental evidence. The volume establishes what is known about these settlements, their regional variations and national characteristics, and what future research could still uncover.

Download or read book The 1872 Diary of the Mooresville Macy Farmstead written by Joyce A. Robinson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Farmsteadin Morgan County, IN has stood as a sentinel on the South West corner of Mooresville since 1859 whenWilliam Monroe Macy (WMM), 1820-1911, built the home. It stands in 2010 as the residence of Donovan and Joyce Robinson. WMM was prosperous by local community standards of the period, however, that did not afford him much leisure. He managed many diverse businesses which kept him and his entire family hard at work every season of the year. This book focuses primarily on the personal journal Alva Perry Macy wrote during 1872 while living on this Farmstead. The activities he records are through the eyes of a 14 year old who seems fascinated with the industry around him. The farm life of the 1870s would not be considered the good old days by most young adults of today. His focus on local people and their names will hopefully provide todays history buffs a chance to put a bit of life on the stark printed pages of genealogy records. To put the "journal" in perspective, the family history has been explored to properly position the Mooresville Macys of 1872. The Robinsons gathered many facts about the Macys in libraries and from surviving descendants. Many stories have been told numerous times by other authors. The Robinsons have compiled what they believe to be an accurate account of the MacyFarmstead.... and offer it to the interest of others. Alva is a ninth generation derivative of Mayflower passengers (John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley) of 1620. His ancestors also include the early Nantucket settlers (Thomas Macy) who challenged the raw wilderness of the 1600s. The Macys were somehow driven for 300 years to continue in that vein as they moved inland and westward from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Download or read book Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 written by Geraint H. Jenkins and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 is published by the University of Wales Press on behalf of the Ceredigion Historical Society, in association with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative account, written by distinguished authors in fifteen chapters, of the wide range of social, economic, political, religious and cultural forces that shaped the ethos and character of the county of Cardiganshire over a period of 600 years. This was a period of great turbulence and change. It witnessed conquest and castle-building, the impact of the Glyndŵr rebellion, the coming of the Protestant Reformation, and the turmoil of civil war. Over time, the inhabitants of the county developed a sense of themselves as a distinctive people who dwelt in a recognisable entity. From very early on, literate people took pride in their native patch; in the eyes of the learned Sulien (d. 1091) and his sons, the land of Ceredig was a sacred patria. Poets and scribes burnished the reputation of the county, and a vibrant poem by Siôn Morys in 1577 maintained that it was the best of shires and ‘the fold of the generous ones’.
Download or read book Archaeology Hotspot Great Britain written by Donald Henson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology Hotspots series offers reader-friendly and engaging narratives of the archaeology in particular countries. Written by archaeological experts with a general reader in mind, each book in the series focuses on what has been found and by whom, what the controversies and scandals have been, ongoing projects, and how it all fits into a broader view of the history of the country. In Archaeology Hotspot Great Britain, expert Donald Henson first chronicles the deep archaeology of a long settled region—including England, Wales, and Scotland—then explores both the famously ancient finds (cave art at Creswell Crags, Stonehenge) and more recent and iconic historic sites and monuments (such as Westminster Abbey and Ironbridge Gorge). He profiles the often larger-than-life personalities and also the previously-marginalized women who have contributed to British archaeology; the controversies influencing how we see the past are also highlighted. Henson considers London’s position in the antiquities trade and the safeguarding of heritage sites. As a whole, the book tells a fascinating story of Great Britain’s history, culture, national heritage, and ongoing role as a hotspot of archaeology.
