Book excerpt: The current publication presents results of the Czech-Uzbekistani archaeological expedition in southern Uzbekistan, particularly on the site of Jandavlattepa. This collaboration originated in 2001 as a joint project of the Archaeological Institute of Uzbekistan in Samarqand and the Institute for Classical Archaeology, Charles University in Prague. The pilot season took place the next year, in 2002. Since then, every year till 2006, a four to six-week-long excavation campaign under the direction of Kazim Abdullaev and Ladislav Stančo has been organised and a huge amount of archaeological material and data has been collected. This volume should be a starting issue of a number publications which shall present this data. This publication has been divided into three parts. The first part contains a brief general description of the site and the history of its excavation, as well as geographical and topographical notes. The second and also core part contains a description of the archaeological situations in various sectors of the site. Sector 20, i.e. the citadel, is brought into special focus. The third part of the publication consists of studies devoted to various groups of finds: coins, textile-making implements, weapons and tools, jewellery and clay figurines and appliqués. A list of all small finds has been attached to the end of the book, with references to the form of depicting them either as a drawing or a photograph, and with reference to those places in the text, where special attention is paid to these finds.

Book excerpt: This book examines the settlement space of special communities in China on the community scale from an interdisciplinary approach that combines perspectives from urban planning and sociology. Using the framework of integration response, it theoretically and empirically explores the approaches these communities adopt to survive and evolve. Empirically, this discussion centers on four particular groups, namely international students, land-lost peasants, ethnic minorities, and migrant workers, and offers an analysis of their settlement spaces from different perspectives. Theoretically, this study optimizes the logic of one-way integration as used in classical theories. By constructing a two-way linkage in the theoretical framework of integration response, it provides a multi-scenario interpretation and summary of the laws of survival and evolution that govern the urban settlements of special communities in China. This study conforms to the major transformations that China has undergone in the concepts, models, and orientation of its development since the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. Furthermore, it renders profound research value and bears practical significance for the adjustment and management of urban spatial patterns in China, social care for marginalized groups, and the construction of a harmonious and moderately prosperous society. Book excerpt: This book provides an introductory guide to the experiments in actor training conducted by the Italian theatre maker Alessandro Fersen in his studio laboratory in Rome between 1957 and 1983. This work resulted in the creation of Mnemodrama, a “drama of memory”. The technique was designed by Fersen to provide actors with a psychic training. By entering a state of trance, they were able to access previously hidden dimensions of their personas, using techniques inspired by ancient ritual practices. In the process of creating Mnemodrama, Fersen collaborated with practitioners in the fields of anthropology, ethnology, and psychology. The inclusion of a selection of his theatre writings reveals the scope and diversity of Fersen’s thinking and argues for this previously little-known artist to be considered one of the pioneers of mid-20th century experimental theatre practice. Through tracing one artist’s journey, this book provides new insights into the relationship between theatre and ritual.
