Book excerpt: 'The Pobratim: A Slav Novel' is a romance novel set in a Slavic village. The day of Milena Zwillievic's marriage had, indeed, been a Black Friday to her. First, she knew that she was being sold to pay her father's debts; secondly, the bridegroom Radonic was old enough to be her father. Added to all this, he was a heavy, rough, uncouth kind of a fellow, the terror of all seamen, and, as he treated his crew as if they had been slaves, no man ever sailed with him if he could possibly get another berth. But when she met Uroc, a young man of her own age, she began to suspect that he was in love with her, something that did not bode well for either of them...

Book excerpt: WINNER in the Romance Category at the 2010 Beach Book Festival, New York This is a collection of tales scattered across Europe. Twelve stories about travel, culture and love. / London, Paris, Zurich, Barcelona, Ulm, Athens, Florence, Vienna, Dubrovnik, Budapest, Mykonos, Venice / PARIS--- We all like fairy tales, about love or sex, left to our personal preferences. But, once upon my reality there was me and a divorce-likely boyfriend. Me and my job and mostly me and me. So, I hit the road, the sky if you mind the details. And here we go, France so deeply in love with itself. BARCELONA--- "In your culture, people meet and make love. In mine, they first try to attract each other, to inflame passion." LONDON--- I think you know me. I am the girl next door. I have a recycled boyfriend and a job on which I hope to make a good living some day. Since high school I've lost about twenty pounds, or even more... Because the bastards are dragging around only feathery-fainted looking women, or a modern society collateral-product called a "female". ULM--- Her first impression when she arrived in Ulm (Germany) was that she got lost, strayed directly into a fairy tale. All the pictures from her sleepy childhood depicted by her mother's soft, dear voice were here. All but the prince. That one hasn't appeared yet. But they are known to be late. Sometimes they only run briefly across the story, just to keep the legend alive. Happy endings are reinvented by mothers. BIOGRAPHY--- Mina A.A. studied journalism in Europe. When she's not traveling, she lives in Florida. www.ROADATLASTOLOVE.COM

Book The Pleasant Nights

    Book Details:
  • Author : Giovanni Francesco Straparola
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2012-01-01
  • ISBN : 1442644273
  • Pages : 673 pages

Download or read book The Pleasant Nights written by Giovanni Francesco Straparola and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned today for his contribution to the rise of the modern European fairy tale, Giovan Francesco Straparola (c. 1480–c. 1557) is particularly known for his dazzling anthology The Pleasant Nights. Originally published in Venice in 1550 and 1553, this collection features seventy-three folk stories, fables, jests, and pseudo-histories, including nine tales we might now designate for 'mature readers' and seventeen proto-fairy tales. Nearly all of these stories, including classics such as 'Puss in Boots,' made their first ever appearance in this collection; together, the tales comprise one of the most varied and engaging Renaissance miscellanies ever produced. Its appeal sustained it through twenty-six editions in the first sixty years. This full critical edition of The Pleasant Nights presents these stories in English for the first time in over a century. The text takes its inspiration from the celebrated Waters translation, which is entirely revised here to render it both more faithful to the original and more sparkishly idiomatic than ever before. The stories are accompanied by a rich sampling of illustrations, including originals from nineteenth-century English and French versions of the text. As a comprehensive critical and historical edition, these volumes contain far more information on the stories than can be found in any existing studies, literary histories, or Italian editions of the work. Donald Beecher provides a lengthy introduction discussing Straparola as an author, the nature of fairy tales and their passage through oral culture, and how this phenomenon provides a new reservoir of stories for literary adaptation. Moreover, the stories all feature extensive commentaries analysing not only their themes but also their fascinating provenances, drawing on thousands of analogue tales going back to ancient Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic stories. Immensely entertaining and readable, The Pleasant Nights will appeal to anyone interested in fairy tales, ancient stories, and folk creations. Such readers will also enjoy Beecher's academically solid and erudite commentaries, which unfold in a manner as light and amusing as the stories themselves.
