Book TOTAL DESIGN OVER TIME

Download or read book TOTAL DESIGN OVER TIME written by Arup and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was established by Ove Arup in 1946, Arup has been the design, architectural and engineering genius behind many of the world's leading buildings and urban areas. The team has been pivotal in creating some of the world's best-known developments: from the groundbreaking Sydney Opera House to the unconventional Centre Pompidou in Paris and Crossrail, the largest construction project in Europe today. Beyond iconic buildings, Arup's influence is also in evidence behind the scenes. The hidden hand of the engineer has transformed many of our everyday experiences - often without us knowing. Arup has developed leading fire-safety systems in airports, cooling systems in museums to protect priceless artworks, and its experience with acoustics ensures every note is heard in the world’s leading opera houses. The book focuses on some of the biggest global issues to arise over the past 70 years. They include the population explosion and subsequent increase in city living, as well as changes in transport patterns that have fuelled the construction of airports, roads, rail and bridges, and even the democratisation of sporting events. Looking at Arup's work under the lens of these world-shaping events, we show how this is a firm that has not just responded to a changing world, but has anticipated and led many of those changes. Arup takes its place in society seriously. Collaborations such as the partnership with C40 to tackle climate change are impacting the way future generations will live. Looking to the future, this is a firm that will continue on its mission to shape a better world.

Book excerpt: The story of the Peterloo massacre, a defining moment in the history of British democracy, told with passion and authority. 'Excellent' Zadie Smith 'Fast-paced and full of fascinating detail' Tim Clayton 'A superb account of one of the defining moments in modern British history' Tristram Hunt 'Peterloo is one of the greatest scandals of British political history... Riding tells this tragic story with mesmerising skill' John Bew On a hot late summer's day, a crowd of 60,000 gathered in St Peter's Field. They came from all over Lancashire – ordinary working-class men, women and children – walking to the sound of hymns and folk songs, wearing their best clothes and holding silk banners aloft. Their mood was happy, their purpose wholly serious: to demand fundamental reform of a corrupt electoral system. By the end of the day fifteen people, including two women and a child, were dead or dying and 650 injured, hacked down by drunken yeomanry after local magistrates panicked at the size of the crowd. Four years after defeating the 'tyrant' Bonaparte at Waterloo, the British state had turned its forces against its own people as they peaceably exercised their time-honoured liberties. As well as describing the events of 16 August in shattering detail, Jacqueline Riding evokes the febrile state of England in the late 1810s, paints a memorable portrait of the reform movement and its charismatic leaders, and assesses the political legacy of the massacre to the present day. As fast-paced and powerful as it is rigorously researched, Peterloo: The Story of the Manchester Massacre adds significantly to our understanding of a tragic staging-post on Britain's journey to full democracy.

Book Maps of War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremy Black
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-10-18
  • ISBN : 1472830520
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Maps of War written by Jeremy Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magnificent visual survey of how conflict was recorded and planned, using maps produced at the time to reveal how warfare and its documentation has changed through the centuries. There is little documented mapping of conflict prior to the Renaissance period, but, from the 17th century onwards, military commanders and strategists began to document the wars in which they were involved and later, to use mapping to actually plan the progress of a conflict. Using contemporary maps, this sumptuous new volume covers the history of the mapping of war on land and shows the way in which maps provide a guide to the history of war. Content includes: - The beginnings of military mapping up to 1600 including the impact of printing and the introduction of gunpowder - The seventeenth century: The focus is on maps to illustrate war, rather than as a planning tool and the chapter considers the particular significance of maps of fortifications. - The eighteenth century: The growing need for maps on a world scale reflects the spread of European power and of transoceanic conflict between Europeans. This chapter focuses in particular on the American War of Independence. - The nineteenth century: Key developments included contouring and the creation of military surveying. Subjects include the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War - The twentieth century including extended features on the First and Second World Wars including maps showing trench warfare and aerial reconnaissance. Much of the chapter focuses on the period from 1945 to the present day including special sections on the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars.
