Book excerpt: The Log Management Activity Workgroup was formed to prepare a strategy addressing estuary-wide log transportation and storage that can be linked to other activities in the estuary, and, through the area planning process, develop an integrated management program. The report describes the current use of the Fraser River estuary for log transportation and handling; forecasts supply and demand trends; and develops guidelines for log management consistent with the management program's policies and goals through identification of relevant issues and determination and resolution of the impact of log management on other estuary activities. The program takes into account basic assumptions as to the changes that have occurred and continue to occur in the estuary and with the coastal forest industry. Issues discussed include environmental impacts, recreation, effect of riparian rights, industrial issues, and the information base.

Book Log handling Impacts on Estuarine Environments

Download or read book Log handling Impacts on Estuarine Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this report is log handling impacts on estuarine salmon resources. Four assessment categories are identified representing types of information needed to properly assess the impacts of log handling in estuaries: the value of estuaries to log handling; the physical and chemical impacts of log handling; the importance of estuaries to salmon; and the actual direct and indirect impacts of log handling on salmon and salmon habitats. These issues are addressed in a case study of the Campbell River estuary.

Book Transboundary Policy Challenges in the Pacific Border Regions of North America

Download or read book Transboundary Policy Challenges in the Pacific Border Regions of North America written by Donald K. Alper and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Transboundary Policy Challenges" responds to a growing interest in borderlands environmental policy by highlighting significant transboundary research and practices being undertaken within and across the Pacific border regions of North America. Growing concern about the seriousness of environmental problems, particularly in high-growth border areas, coupled with the rising awareness of the complexities entailed in wise development decisions, has spurred recognition that new realities require new responses. Critical for effective environmental protection, restoration, and education is a sharing of understanding and effort across borders. "Transboundary Policy Challenges" advances transborder environmental research and discusses sensible policy directions with particular focus on critical areas of international concern and engagement: land and water use planning; regional growth management; trade and transportation corridors; environmental education; and travel and tourism. Contributors to the volume represent a range of disciplines, as well as institutions in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Book Log handling Impacts on Estuarine Environments

Download or read book Log handling Impacts on Estuarine Environments written by Michael Edward Hagen and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The focus of this report is log-handling impacts on estuarine salmon resources. Four assessment categories are identified representing types of information needed to properly assess the impacts of log handling in estuaries: the value of estuaries to log handling; log-handling activities and their primary physical and chemical impacts; the importance of estuaries to salmon; and the direct and indirect impacts of log handling on salmon and salmon habitats. Common to all categories is a lack of the quantified information needed for optimum resource allocation decisions. Generating this type of information is a desirable management action"--Abstract.
