This book explains LOC research, until now mainly confined to academic circles, in terms easily understandable to the average person. The author, a clinical psychologist who has spent nearly five decades investigating and writing about LOC, helps the reader to explore his or her own locus of control and what those orientations might mean for how life is lived. Specifically addressing faculty roles in this structure, William G. Bowen and Eugene M. Tobin ask: do higher education institutions have what it takes to reform effectively from within? Book excerpt: The magnitude of the threat to the human genetic material posed by environmental agents has not as yet been fully determined. Never theless, the potential hazards of many chemicals have been identi fied by studies on lower organisms. However, too little is known regarding the comparability or lack of it between the metabolic pathways available in such organisms and those in man. Although at present there is great public concern for what is considered by some as the excessive use of laboratory animals in toxicological testing, it seems clear that the usage of mammalian systems may be deemed necessary. It has been proposed that cell culture systems might suffice to meet this need, however, such approaches cannot match the complexity of physiological occurances that are present in the intact animal. For studies of genetic effects, some non-invasive human test systems are presently available. These do not, however, meet the re quirements for extensive laboratory studies. In order to assess the risks to humans of environmental factors such laboratory investiga tions are essential. Therefore, for the forseeable future reliance on experiments using laboratory animals will be necessary. This Volume, which contains the proceedings of a workshop which was held at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, March 29-31, 1982, explores the existing methodologies and their utility for risk estimations. It covers the most well developed human systems, as well as the most widely used animal tests.

In the third chapter, we include the effect of genetic recombination into account and find out the advantage of sexual reproduction for adaptation. These models are useful for the evolution of a broad range of asexual and sexual populations, including virus evolution in a host and a host population.

It serves as an introduction to the combinatorics of symmetric functions, more precisely to Schur and Schubert polynomials. Also studied is the geometry of Grassmannians, flag varieties, and especially, their Schubert varieties. This book examines profound connections that unite these two subjects. The book is divided into three chapters. The first is devoted to symmetricfunctions and especially to Schur polynomials. These are polynomials with positive integer coefficients in which each of the monomials correspond to a Young tableau with the property of being ``semistandard''. The second chapter is devoted to Schubert polynomials, which were discovered by A. Lascoux andM.-P. Schutzenberger who deeply probed their combinatorial properties. It is shown, for example, that these polynomials support the subtle connections between problems of enumeration of reduced decompositions of permutations and the Littlewood-Richardson rule, a particularly efficacious version of which may be derived from these connections. The final chapter is geometric. It is devoted to Schubert varieties, subvarieties of Grassmannians, and flag varieties defined by certain incidenceconditions with fixed subspaces. This volume makes accessible a number of results, creating a solid stepping stone for scaling more ambitious heights in the area. The author's intent was to remain elementary: The first two chapters require no prior knowledge, the third chapter uses some rudimentary notionsof topology and algebraic geometry. For this reason, a comprehensive appendix on the topology of algebraic varieties is provided. This book is the English translation of a text previously published in French.
