Book excerpt: Constructed over a near 40-year period, more than 340 2-6-0s were constructed to the designs of Sir Nigel Gresley, Edward Thompson and Arthur Peppercom. Amongst the great unsung heroes of railway services in northeast England and Scotland primarily, the 2-6-0s operated, until the arrival of the more powerful 'V2' 2-6-2s, the fastest scheduled freight services operated by the LNER. Designed for mixed traffic, the 2-6-0s could be found on a wide range of services, from the mundane pick-up freight to semi-fast passenger trains; indeed, it was only the crack top-link expresses that they were not expected to pull. Amongst the routes for which the type became closely linked were services over the West Highland line from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig, for which Sir Nigel Gresley designed the six-strong 'K4' class, locomotives graced with such evocative names as Lord of the Isles and Macleod of Macleod. The more numerous 'K1' class, designed by Peppercom, were amongst the last locomotives built to a design inherited by the LNER and were amongst the last steam locomotives active on North Eastem Region metals as steam rapidly gave way to diesel in 1967.In the latest addition to the popular 'Working Steam' series, the collections of many of the most notable railway photographers in the country - such as Dick Riley, Roy Hobbs and Derek Penney - have been drawn upon to produce this pictorial tribute to the stylish 2-6-0 designs of the GNR and LNER. Incorporating some 85 colour illustrations, alongside an introductory essay and detailed captions, the book is a graphic remainder of the great variety of work undertaken by these locomotives during their long and illustrious careers. The LNER 2-6-0s have, perhaps, been largely overlooked in the vast array of information published on 20th century locomotive development; this pictorial tribute helps to put the record straight. It will appeal to LNER enthusiasts and modellers alike.

Book British Steam Military Connections LNER Steam Locomotives Tornado

Download or read book British Steam Military Connections LNER Steam Locomotives Tornado written by Keith Langston and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This British Railways history explores the long-held tradition of naming steam locomotives in honor of the military. The naming of steam locomotives was a beloved British tradition since the first railway locomotives appeared in 1804. Many of the names were chosen in honor of military personnel, regiments, squadrons, naval vessels, aircraft, battles and associated historic events. This volume looks specifically at the steam locomotives with military-inspired names that were built by the London & North Eastern Railway, which joined the British Railways stock in 1948. A large number of the company’s Jubilee class locomotives were given names with a military connection, as were a small number of Black Five class engines. Famously the majority of the much-admired Royal Scot class of engines carried names associated with the military in general and regimental names in particular. Many of the nameplates were adorned with ornate crests and badges. Long after the demise of mainline steam, rescued nameplates have become prized collectors’ items. This generously illustrated publication highlights the relevant steam locomotives and explains the origins and social history surrounding their military names.

Book LMS LNER Steam Locomotives

Download or read book LMS LNER Steam Locomotives written by Malcolm Clegg and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L M S & L N E R Steam Locomotives, is the result of over two decades of photographing steam locomotives in action in many parts of Britain covered by the former LMS and LNER Railway Companies. They were the two largest of the ‘Big Four’ Railway Companies which operated in Britain between 1923 and 1948. The majority of the photographs were taken during the British Railways era between 1948 and 1968. Although the author Malcolm Clegg has a sizeable collection of steam locomotive photographs taken during this period, the photographs which appear in this book are from the private collection of his lifelong friend and family relative, Mr Peter Cookson (a retired school-master), himself a railway historian, author and amateur photographer, who has kindly provided the photographs for publication in this book. Many of the photographs selected are rare and unusual for a variety of reasons which should appeal to railway historians and steam enthusiasts alike.

Book The East Coast Main Line 1939 1959 Volume 2

Download or read book The East Coast Main Line 1939 1959 Volume 2 written by Peter Tuffrey and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2022-07-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • The first detailed study of this huge mainline through its operational history • Features extended commentaries from the authors, rich in detail • Superbly illustrated with black and white photographs, many never seen before In this second and final volume, the whole of the East Coast Main Line between King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley stations is examined closely, with a particular emphasis on the ways and structures: the line, stations, connections, yards, and other physical features. Interposed are accounts of the traffic at the principal stations – including connecting and branch line services – with observations on changes over the period 1939 to 1959. Some emphasis is placed on freight traffic on account of its importance and, perhaps, its relative unfamiliarity to the reader. The lines, stations and many other elements are described as they were in August 1939, but as some plans on which they are based are dated before the late 1930s, there may be marginal differences from the precise layout in 1939.
