Book excerpt: The focus of critical U.S. programs on Homeland Security and Homeland Defense applications, and on the brown water navies of potential adversaries elicits a need for understanding and visualizing the near-shore land and maritime environments. The goal of this project is to develop a windows application that will provide a near real-time visual depiction of wave, wind, or other environmental elements' impact on the littoral environment that can be used as an aid to decision makers in their planning/response efforts. To achieve our goal we will use our latest commercially available PC-based military simulation. Our commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) naval strategy simulation, Sonalysts Combat Simulations - Dangerous Waters (registered trademark), includes high fidelity 3D micro-simulations of subsurface, surface, and air platforms that also include environmental characteristics such as day/night, currents, wind and stormy weather. The primary focus of this simulation is in the deep water environment. We will modify this engine as necessary to provide a realistic animation of the shallow water environment that exists within the littoral zone. We intend to show the feasibility of performing this shallow water visualization process through a proof of concept application developed during this Phase I period of nine months. This proof of concept will demonstrate a computer-based tool capable of providing fairly rapid rendering and realistic visualization of a littoral environment that is composed of varying elements such as wind speed and direction, wave height, periodicity, and direction.

This was the 6th International S- posium Computer Mapping and GIS for Coastal Zone Management, a collabo- tion between the International Cartographic Association’s (ICA) Commission on Marine Cartography, and the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Comm- sion on Coastal Systems. The theme for 2005 was: De ning and Building a Marine and Coastal Spatial Data Infrastructure. As a major coastal event, the CoastGIS series of conferences always attracts an international audience of coastal researchers, managers, and pr- titioners who use one or more of the geospatial technologies (e. g. GIS, GPS, digital mapping, remote sensing, databases, and the Internet) in their work. The CoastGIS series is fundamentally an international event which over the years has gained a strong following attracting delegates from around the globe. Hosted by the University of Aberdeen – at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) – once again CoastGIS 2005 provided an opportunity to communicate the results of a wide range of innovative scienti c research into coastal and marine applications of the geospatial technologies, including remote sensing, Geograp- cal Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), databases, data models, the Internet and online mapping systems.

The practice of visualization involves making and manipulating images that convey novel phenomena and ideas. First I describe visualization within the context of visual environmental communication, an emerging and rapidly evolving discipline. A review of the literature on visualization is provided and a typology of cartographic visualization and scene simulation is proposed. Ways to make visualizations relevant for work with the public and policy makers is discussed. While significant progress has been made in the area of visualization for climate change with much of it focusing on coastal impacts, little attention has been given to visualizing the marine environment within the framework of visualization studies. More technical work on integrating maps and scenes is needed for planning and management of ocean and coasts, including research on advanced GIS methods for decision-making and virtual reality.

Book excerpt: The interaction between land and sea is controlled by a number of processes that are in general driven by the equilibrium between environmental forcing components (e.g. hydrodynamic - waves, currents, surges), atmospheric (e.g. winds) and terrestrial (e.g. catchment land cover) and sediment dynamics. In the context of the Anthropocene epoch, the equilibrium in many coastal regions is now often altered by the influence of human activities. Successive human activities globally influence (indirectly) these forcing components, helping magnify the negative impact of extreme meteorological events and sea level rise. Directly, human activity can also influence a number of processes at a local scale within and between the catchment, the sea and the coast. For example, misplaced engineered infrastructure inside these naturally dynamic environments can accentuate disequilibrium, destabilizing shores and deltas. Development in catchments can promote rapid runoff, inducing sometimes-dramatic effects on downstream urbanized areas, the socio-economy as well as on coastal resources and ecosystems. This Research Topic aims to assemble research and review papers that focus on the dynamics of shores and deltas in peril under present conditions as well as in the future context of sea-level rise, climate change and adaptation strategies under various scenarios.

However, this will only be the case where defence groups exist, and where CPAs take up the challenge of developing SMPs. Coastal landscapes have been produced by the natural forces of wind, waves and tides, and many are nationally or internationally important for their habitats and natural features. Past practices at the coast, such as the construction of harbours, jetties and traditional defence systems may have contributed to the deterioration of the coast. English Nature (1992) have argued that if practices and methods of coastal defence are allowed to continue, then coastlines would be faced with worsening consequences, including: The loss of mudflats and the birds which live on them Damage to geological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and scenic heritage by erosion, due to the stabilisation of the coast elsewhere Cutting of sediment supplies to beaches resulting in the loss of coastal wildlife Cessation through isolation from coastal processes, of the natural operation of spits, with serious deterioration of rare plants, animals and geomorphological and scenic qualities (English Nature, 1992) A number of designations, provided by national and international legislation do exist to aid conservation.

The SWAV is a software program that will be deployed on ships so that naval personal will be able to "see" first hand the environment to which they are going to be deployed. Further, SWAV will be a powerful graphical training aid to educate novice seamen on the dynamics and dangers of the littoral environment. The realistic imagery produced by SWAV conveys a multitude of information that cannot be gained through numeric or simple sea state metrics. Useful Approximations in Wave Visualization - While the field of oceanographic hydrodynamics is quite mature, the use of analytical and computational approaches developed in that area for the development of realistic ocean surfaces has been largely studied only in the movie and video game industries. A key objective of the SWAV program is to establish an analytical approach that provides physically realistic ocean scenes with a minimum of computer resources to provide a gateway to a realtime ocean visualization tool. Optical Properties of the Ocean Surface - Optical measurements of the ocean surface and sub-surface are commonplace. A key objective of the SWAV program is to connect meteorological conditions with sea surface optical properties to develop an analytical link between the instantaneous environment and the light transmission and reflection properties of the ocean surface.
