  • Author : Gail R. Benjamin

Download or read book Japanese Lessons written by Gail R. Benjamin and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin dismantles Americans' preconceived notions of the Japanese education system "Gail R. Benjamin reaches beyond predictable images of authoritarian Japanese educators and automaton schoolchildren to show the advantages and disadvantages of a system remarkably different from the American one..."—The New York Times Book Review Americans regard the Japanese educational system and the lives of Japanese children with a mixture of awe and indignance. We respect a system that produces higher literacy rates and superior math skills, but we reject the excesses of a system that leaves children with little free time and few outlets for creativity and self-expression. In Japanese Lessons, Gail R. Benjamin recounts her experiences as a American parent with two children in a Japanese elementary school. An anthropologist, Benjamin successfully weds the roles of observer and parent, illuminating the strengths of the Japanese system and suggesting ways in which Americans might learn from it. With an anthropologist's keen eye, Benjamin takes us through a full year in a Japanese public elementary school, bringing us into the classroom with its comforting structure, lively participation, varied teaching styles, and non-authoritarian teachers. We follow the children on class trips and Sports Days and through the rigors of summer vacation homework. We share the experiences of her young son and daughter as they react to Japanese schools, friends, and teachers. Through Benjamin we learn what it means to be a mother in Japan--how minute details, such as the way mothers prepare lunches for children, reflect cultural understandings of family and education.

Book Little Lessons in Japanese Classic Reprint

Download or read book Little Lessons in Japanese Classic Reprint written by Allan Corstorphin Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Lessons in Japanese The arrangement of these lessons is a Radical Departure. The Method Of Study advocated is equally radical. We shall not here attempt any justification of this, but let the success of those who study it speak for the system. Requests and commands, certainly the most useful phrases in the Japanese language, are not given here. This Little Lesson simply enfilades, as it were, a group of about one hundred verbs. In the Little Lesson on the Gerund, these verbs may be carried by frontal attack, and requests and commands formed with each and all of them ad lib. - a matter of, say, one thousand phrases with the verbs alone. If you study this system with an intelligent Japanese who will simply read the sentences with you, as per instructions, you will make more progress than you could with the most expert teacher who would teach you in the ordinary way. We cannot of course compel the student to follow our methods exactly; all we can say is that if he will follow them for this lesson, and for the lesson on the Gerund, he should be able very shortly to begin to talk, and that is more than students of most systems can do in a year. Book Remembering the Kanji 2

Download or read book Remembering the Kanji 2 written by James W. Heisig and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the first volume of Remembering the Kanji, the present work provides students with helpful tools for learning the pronunciation of the kanji. Behind the notorious inconsistencies in the way the Japanese language has come to pronounce the characters it received from China lie several coherent patterns. Identifying these patterns and arranging them in logical order can reduce dramatically the amount of time spent in the brute memorization of sounds unrelated to written forms. Many of the “primitive elements,” or building blocks, used in the drawing of the characters also serve to indicate the “Chinese reading” that particular kanji use, chiefly in compound terms. By learning one of the kanji that uses such a “signal primitive,” one can learn the entire group at the same time. In this way, Remembering the Kanji 2 lays out the varieties of phonetic pattern and offers helpful hints for learning readings, that might otherwise appear completely random, in an efficient and rational way. Individual frames cross-reference the kanji to alternate readings and to the frame in volume 1 in which the meaning and writing of the kanji was first introduced. A parallel system of pronouncing the kanji, their “Japanese readings,” uses native Japanese words assigned to particular Chinese characters. Although these are more easily learned because of the association of the meaning to a single word, the author creates a kind of phonetic alphabet of single syllable words, each connected to a simple Japanese word, and shows how they can be combined to help memorize particularly troublesome vocabulary. The 4th edition has been updated to include the 196 new kanji approved by the government in 2010 as “general-use” kanji.

Book My First Book of Japanese Words

Download or read book My First Book of Japanese Words written by Michelle Haney Brown and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My First Book of Japanese Words is a beautifully illustrated book that introduces young children to Japanese language and culture through everyday words. The words profiled in this book are all commonly used in the Japanese language and are both informative and fun for English-speaking children to learn. The goals of My First Book of Japanese Words are multiple: to familiarize children with the sounds and structure of Japanese speech, to introduce core elements of Japanese culture, to illustrate the ways in which languages differ in their treatment of everyday sounds and to show how, through cultural importation, a single word can be shared between languages. Both teachers and parents will welcome the book's cultural and linguistic notes and appreciate how the book is organized in a familiar ABC structure. Each word is presented in Kanji (when applicable), Kana, and Romanized form (Romaji). With the help of this book, we hope more children (and adults) will soon be a part of the 125 million people worldwide that speak Japanese!
