Download or read book Les Fauves written by Russell T. Clement and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-05-25 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive scholarly bibliography/research guide/sourcebook on the major French Fauve painters (Henri Matisse and Georges Braque are treated in separate Greenwood bio-bibliographies). It includes information on 3,120 books and articles as well as chronologies, biographical sketches, and exhibition lists. Each artist receives a primary and secondary bibliography with many annotated entries. Secondary bibliographies include details about each artists' life and career, relationships with other artists, work in various media, iconography, and more. Designed for art historians, art students, museum and gallery curators, and art lovers alike, this volume organizes the vast literature surrounding this fascinating, revolutionary, 20th-century art group. Genuinely new art is always challenging, sometimes even shocking to those unprepared for it. In 1905, the paintings of Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and their friends shocked conservative museum-goers; hence, the eventual popularity of art critic Louis Vauxcelles's tag les fauves, or wild beasts by which these artists became known. Although it lasted only three or four years, Fauvism is recognized as the first artistic revolution of international consequence in the 20th century. It was based on the glorification of pure saturated colors and the free expression of primitivism. It was a dynamic sensualism; an equilibrium of passion and order, fire and austerity that could not last. By the end of 1908, Fauvism collapsed in the face of Cubism, which, moreover, several Fauve artists helped to form.
Download or read book Symbolism Its Origins and Its Consequences written by Rosina Neginsky and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the symbol is at the root of the Symbolist movement, but this symbol is different from the way it was used and understood in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the Symbolist movement, a symbol is not an allegory. The Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck defined its essence in an article that appeared on April 24, 1887, in L’Art moderne. He wrote that the notion of a symbol in the Symbolist movement is the opposite of the notion of the symbol in classical usage: instead of going from the abstract to the concrete (Venus, incarnated in the statue, represents love), it goes from the concrete to the abstract, from “what is seen, heard, felt, tasted, and sensed to the evocation of the idea.” This volume attempts to give a glimpse into the power of the Symbolist movement and the nature of its fundamental and interdisciplinary role in the evolution of art and literature of the twentieth century. It records the studies of a group of scholars, who met and discussed these topics together for the first time in 2009. While illuminating the specificity of Symbolism in art, architecture and literature in different European countries, these articles also demonstrate the crucial role of French Symbolism in the development of the international Symbolist movement. The authors hope that an expanding group, a society of Art, Literature and Music in Symbolism and Decadence (ALMSD), born out of the first meeting, will continue to further this discussion at future conferences and in the printed conference proceedings.

Download or read book Pissarro written by Joachim Pissarro and published by Skira/Wildenstein. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new catalogue of the paintings of Camille Pissarro, while drawing extensively on the 1939 edition published by his son, makes an innovative contribution to the understanding of the work of this great artist through the discovery of previously unpublished pictures and documents. Over a career that spanned the second half of the 19th century, Pissarro tested every pictorial experiment of his time, from Impressionism to Pointillism. His rich style reveals the gifts of a great colorist and of a master of light endowed with a striking sensitivity to nature. This exhaustive 3-volume catalogue, co-published with the Wildenstein Institute, features 1528 paintings--of which 213 have never been published or are little known--detailed commentaries with rigorous analyses of each work, a complete biography of the artist, illustrated with archival photographs, a bibliography and a complete list of exhibitions.
