Book Managing Historic Sites and Buildings

Download or read book Managing Historic Sites and Buildings written by David Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Historic Sites and Buildings looks at the choices and the tensions that exist in conservation and interpretation of the heritage. Preservation and presentation are central activities, arguably means and ends in the conservation of the historic environment. But are they self-reinforcing or do they work against each other? In a series of essays which span form prehistoric sacred site to Second World war military remains, from medieval monastery to 1970s housing estate, we look at contemporary concerns and debates about the way the past is shaped, physically and metaphorically , by these two aspects of heritage management. Starting from the position that the fundamental purpose of the whole process is to communicate understanding about the human past, these essays examine how far the ideologies, strategies, tactics and techniques of preservation and presentation are mutually supportive. the success of integrated approaches that are inclusive of social, economic and green environmental concerns is understood, but the value of developing truly sustainable management for individual historic places is only just becoming evident. At the heart of such an approach lies a crucial relationship between the activity of preserving historic places and of promoting understanding of their significance.

Book England

  • Pages : 760 pages

Download or read book England written by Elain Harwood and published by B.T. Batsford. This book was released on 2003 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1987 more than 300 buildings have been listed for their special architectural and historic interest. From humble prefabs to the colossal Park Hill, Sheffield, the range of listed buildings is staggering. This book lists all of them. Sir Albert Richardson's Bracken House, built for the Financial Times in 1955-59, was the first post-war building to be officially listed, when it was threatened with demolition. Listing led to its remodelling by Michael Hopkins in 1989-91, a demonstration of how the conservation process can inspire radical architectural interventions. Subsequent listings have been prompted by requests from the public when a building is threatened, or from detailed studies by building type. Buildings range from traditional works by Raymond Erith and Donald McMorran and many of the 'pop icons' of the 1960s such as Centre Point, to internationally outstanding modern works like Stirling and Gowans' Leicester Engineering Building and Foster Associates' offices for Willis Faber Dumas in Ipswich.

Book Modernist Semis and Terraces in England

Download or read book Modernist Semis and Terraces in England written by Finn Jensen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two World Wars, there was an unprecedented need for new houses in Britain which resulted in a building boom. While only a small percentage of this building took the form of Modernism, there was still a significant number of semis and terraces built for the workers and middle-class families in the 1920s and 1930s built in this style. This book examines these modest Modernist houses within the broader context of the Modern Movement in Europe, as well as the inter-war building boom in suburban Britain. Illustrated with line drawings and photographs of more than 30 examples from around the country, and based on little-known contemporary material such as catalogues, advertisements, radio broadcasts and letters, it shows how these houses speak of a time of political, social and artistic unrest, and a world where the avant-garde architects sought to capture the spirit of modern technology in their designs for the average home owner. While the Modernist houses never became popular with the general public, the fact that so many are still standing and now sought after by twenty-first century families speak for their endurance and special appeal.
