The original scheme, however, could not be carried out and my sketch, slight and summary as it is, has to appear by itself. Since I am not an Arabist, it is hardly necessary to say that I owe much to other writers - most, perhaps, to Gaetani, Huart, snouck-hurgronje, and Margoliouth. The last named has laid me under the deepest obliga tion; for he has been so good as to read my book in proof, and to correct in several places my ignorance or my inadvertence. These untitled manuscripts had, therefore, to be arranged according to subjects (the system employed by Dr Rieu in his British Museum Catalogues being generally followed) in a separate class, which constitutes Part II of this volume. Lastly, for the Library officials (whose point of view must necessarily be bibliographical rather than literary, and by whom one work in four volumes is regarded as four manu scripts, while one volume containing four separate works is regarded as one) it was necessary to arrange all the mss. According to order of class-marks, and to indicate opposite each the article or articles under which its description might be found. Movable type was adopted in the Middle East only in the early nineteenth century, and it wasn't until the second half of the century that the first works of classical Islamic religious scholarship were printed there. But from that moment on, Ahmed El Shamsy reveals, the technology of print transformed Islamic scholarship and Arabic literature. In the first wide-ranging account of the effects of print and the publishing industry on Islamic scholarship, El Shamsy tells the fascinating story of how a small group of editors and intellectuals brought forgotten works of Islamic literature into print and defined what became the classical canon of Islamic thought.
