Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of the Birds of Nelson County The following paper is based almost entirely upon my former list of the birds of this locality, written in January, 1883, and is prepared at the suggestion of Professor Procter, State Geologist, to accompany Mr Linny's report on the geology of Nelson county. So short a time has elapsed since the former paper was written, and my opportunities for field work have been so limited, that I can only add four species to the fauna as heretofore given, namely: Coturniculus henslowi, Ionornis martinica, Nettion carolinensis, and Fuligula collaris. The first, third and fourth of these were all taken by myself, and the circumstances which induce me to include the latter are fully set forth in another place. Most of the observations were made in the immediate vicinity of Bardstown, which is situated in N. Lat. 37 52', W. Long. 85 18', just on the western limit of the "Bluegrass Region," forty miles southeast of Louisville, and about one hundred southwest of Cincinnati. The sylvan flora of this locality is quite diversified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Notes on Nebraska Birds: A List of the Species and Subspecies Found in the State, With Notes on Their Distribution, Food-Habits, Etc.; Corrected to April 22, 1896 Of course the vast amount of material thus brought together had to be assorted and arranged at odd times between working hours in the University. While the paper is not what it should be, nor even what it might have been, if coming from a different person, still it is fairly satisfactory as a basis for future work. Book A List of the Birds of Minnesota

Download or read book A List of the Birds of Minnesota written by P. L. Hatch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of Minnesota: October, 1880 I understand better than I did once, why so few competent nat uralists have undertaken the life-histories of birds in the interest of agriculture. To follow a single species from the time of its ar rival until its departure, and record its habits of migration, feed ing through all the months, nesting, rearing and protecting its young, seems to be task enough forthe spare heurs of any one in dividual, but what of it when instead of one we have nearly three hundred. While, however, I am doing this with the assistance of all reliable aid which I can enlist, there is an increasing demand for a correct list north for the use of collectors and for scientific purposes in the other states and foreign countries, which I have now completed and herewith place in your hands for publication it it shall meet your approval. Yours very respectfully, P. L. Hatch. Minneapolis. October 21, 1880. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short listed for the Green Earth book award In early April, as Owen and his sister search the hickories, oaks, and dogwoods for returning birds, a huge group of birds leaves the misty mountain slopes of the Yucatan peninsula for the 600-mile flight across the Gulf of Mexico to their summer nesting grounds. One of them is a Cerulean warbler. He will lose more than half his body weight even if the journey goes well. Aloft over the vast ocean, the birds encourage each other with squeaky chirps that say, “We are still alive. We can do this.” Owen’s family watches televised reports of a great storm over the Gulf of Mexico, fearing what it may mean for migrating songbirds. In alternating spreads, we wait and hope with Owen, then struggle through the storm with the warbler. This moving story with its hopeful ending appeals to us to preserve the things we love. The backmatter includes a North American bird migration map, birding information for kids, and guidance for how native plantings can transform yards into bird and wildlife habitat.
