Most of the poems in this collection are an exploration into the dark reaches of the mind and heart so that one may ponder the highs and lows of life to better appreciate the blessings they might receive. "We cannot truly know and understand the light, until we have at least peered into the darkness, and until we have overcome the darkness that lives within each of our own souls. Can you appreciate the blessings in your life without understanding what it is like to stumble within the dark?" Have compassion for those around you who are going through dark times and who are stumbling in their own darkness.

Book Classic Cocktails Liquid Love Poems

Download or read book Classic Cocktails Liquid Love Poems written by Genevieve Sourlie and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genevieve, a poet, and Sean, a bartender, wrote this literary affair between classic cocktails and love poemsan adventure into the romance and libertine spirit of classic cocktails, including fabulous recipes from the 1920s with modern variations. Hemingways advice to write drunk and edit sober describes their creative process as poems were written under the spirit of each drink. The cocktails provide the metaphors for a poetic love story, giving the history, secrets, and mystique of each drink. What started as a single poem, using the martini as a metaphor for love and life, grew into a merger of many classic cocktails with the developing romance. Key social issues of the times were also swept along with it as the poems invite the reader along on their journey. Classic Cocktails: Liquid Love Poems is a tribute to the slower styles of earlier times, linking classic cocktails with important issues such as liberty, freedom of choice, love between men and women as equals, and honoring previous generationsfor whom everyone should be grateful to as part of the evolution of the human species. These issues are still present in modern culture, and now more than ever people need poetry, romance, and spirituality in their lives. With the quick pace of life and dependence on technology to communicate, people need to slow down and take time to get in touch with their natural selves; who we were before the social conditioning around survival, money, and materialism cemented people into false identities or stereotypical roles. Everyone needs time to just beto reconnect with ones spirit and allow creative urges and inspirations to express themselves freely. This reconnection can truly be a spiritual journey to not only connect with our selves, but also with each other. Hemingway has a lot to say about this in the last poem, The Liberty Bell.

Book excerpt: In Infusion: The Spirit of the Soul Tracey Kirkwood Baker calls attention to the fact that each and every individual has special gifts and talents to share with the world. Through the chapters of Generations, Passions, and Visions, she takes us on a journey of the many feelings that are experienced throughout life. She ardently expresses human emotions in poetic style. There is a gentle core of love, wisdom, and power that lives in the human spirit. It is essential that we tap into our passions, and reconnect with the Divine Spirit that guides us daily. As we live fast-paced, high-tech lives, it is important to understand the need to take time for and with yourself, and to know yourself on an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level. Putting words in the form of verse has been around for centuries, a way of memorizing moral or sacred beliefs. When we are aware of our creative power, the Creator is manifested in us. Love, encouragement, and inspiration rise from these verses.

Book The Mute Immortals Speak

Download or read book The Mute Immortals Speak written by Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A body of Bedouin oral poetry which was collected in the second or third Islamic century, the pre-Islamic qasidah, or ode, stands with the Qur'an as a twin foundation of Arabo-Islamic literary culture. Throughout the rich fifteen-hundred-year history of classical Arabic literature, the qasidah served as profane anti-text to the sacred text of the Qur'an. While recognizing the esteem in which Arabs have traditionally held this poetry of the pagan past, modern critics in both East and West have yet to formulate a poetics that would provide the means to analyze and evaluate the qasidah. Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych here offers the first aesthetics appropriate for this orally composed Arabic verse, an aesthetics that is built on—and tested on—close readings of a number of the poems. Drawing on the insights of contemporary literary theory, anthropology, and the history of religions, Stetkevych maintains that the poetry of the qasidah is ritualized in both form and function. She brings to bear an extensive body of lore, legend, and myth as she interprets individual themes and images with references to rites of passage and rituals of sacrifice. Her English translations of the poems under discussion convey the power and beauty of the originals, as well as a sense of their complex intertextuality and distinctive lexicon. The Mute Immortals Speak will be important for students and scholars in the fields of Middle Eastern literatures, Islamic studies, folklore, oral literature, and literary theory, and by anthropologists, comparatists, historians of religion, and medievalists.

Book The senses in early modern England 1558 1660

Download or read book The senses in early modern England 1558 1660 written by Simon Smith and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Considering a wide range of early modern texts, performances and artworks, the essays in this collection demonstrate how attention to the senses illuminates the literature, art and culture of early modern England. Examining canonical and less familiar literary works alongside early modern texts ranging from medical treatises to conduct manuals via puritan polemic and popular ballads, the collection offers a new view of the senses in early modern England. The volume offers dedicated essays on each of the five senses, each relating works of art to their cultural moments, whilst elsewhere the volume considers the senses collectively in particular cultural contexts. It also pursues the sensory experiences that early modern subjects encountered through the very acts of engaging with texts, performances and artworks. This book will appeal to scholars of early modern literature and culture, to those working in sensory studies, and to anyone interested in the art and life of early modern England.
