Each idea consists of a clever title that's sure to pique the interest of the people in the pews, along with a purpose statement and a brief discussion of the subject (including outline points and scripture references). Full of striking imagery, Lions And Cows Dining Together provides plenty of seeds for developing riveting, thought-provoking messages on a wide variety of critical topics. This homiletic "do-it-yourself" kit will be a treasured addition to any pastor's library -- combined with the material in its companion volume, there are over five years' worth of pump-priming ideas for weekly sermons that apply Jesus' teachings to contemporary living. But Lions And Cows Dining Together isn't just for preachers -- it's also an excellent source of meditations for men's, women's, or youth groups as well as inspiring devotional reading. Here's a sample of some of the inventive entries: - God Always Wins At Hide And Seek - Worship Is More Than Just Staying Awake - Can Pagan Objects Be Sanitized? - You Can Learn To Like Spinach, Liver, And Theology - Hell: But It's A Dry Heat - Will Reverend Tortoise Ever Catch Doctor Hare? - Pearly Gates Entrance Exam - Pilgrim Or Tourist? Terry Cain is a retired pastor who served United Methodist congregations in eastern Nebraska. In addition to Shaking Wolves Out Of Cherry Trees, he is also the author of What Your Minister Is Afraid To Tell You About The Bible and Frankenstein and Miss America: Who's Who and Who's Not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of short stories based on veterinarian Dr. Louis Kwantes' experiences with pets and people. Could it be that animals might show sensitivities to spiritual realities that we are often too dull to notice? Are they participating in a very real world that we somehow tend to ignore? Touching, humorous, and thought provoking, these stories reveal something of the nature of learning and personal growth, and how animals can in some way be our spiritual guides. Things are not always as they appear... Readers may find themselves reflected in the characters presented, and pet owners will certainly relate to some of the situations described. The veterinary vignettes section includes episodes from North America as well as overseas, and chapters under mundane and miraculous include several parables told from the perspective of a pet. The final series of chapters, which contain information on caring for a variety of different pets, is a resource for current and prospective pet owners.

Download or read book The Lion s Skin written by Rafael Sabatini and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1911 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Caryll, lately from Rome, stood by the window, looking out over the rainswept, steaming quays to Notre Dame on the island yonder. Overhead rolled and crackled the artillery of an April thunderstorm, and Mr. Caryll, looking out upon Paris in her shroud of rain, under her pall of thundercloud, felt himself at harmony with Nature. Over his heart, too, the gloom of storm was lowering, just as in his heart it was still little more than April time. Behind him, in that chamber furnished in dark oak and leather of a reign or two ago, sat Sir Richard Everard at a vast writing-table all a-litter with books and papers; and Sir Richard watched his adoptive son with fierce, melancholy eyes, watched him until he grew impatient of this pause. "Well?" demanded the old baronet harshly. "Will you undertake it, Justin, now that the chance has come?" And he added: "You'll never hesitate if you are the man I have sought to make you." Mr. Caryll turned slowly. "It is because I am the man that you-that God and you-have made me that I do hesitate." His voice was quiet and pleasantly modulated, and he spoke English with the faintest slur-perceptible, perhaps, only to the keenest ear-of a French accent. To ears less keen it would merely seem that he articulated with a precision so singular as to verge on pedantry.

Book Looking Back

Download or read book Looking Back written by James F. Queenan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Queenan tells a very human story of his life, family and travels, withholding no family secrets. Included is an account of his diverse and evolving career as a lawyer who handled business transactions, drafted estate plans, tried cases and, at the end, found greatest satisfaction in representing corporations reorganizing under chapter 11. He tells of the losing party in one case sending a bomb in the mail to his client. We also learn of the disastrous results of a Ponzi scheme that used ruses similar to those of Bernard Madoff. Judge Queenans high values and commitment to due process of law are apparent throughout. He is still troubled by the prejudicial effect of the press conferences held by the district attorney in the Brinks armed robbery case, which came before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts when he was a young law clerk with the court. In giving an account of his years on the bench, a time when he was also teaching in law school, Judge Queenan makes law and trials understandable to the layman. He rejects the notion that bankruptcy is a refuge for the dishonest and lazy, and he decries the countrys toxic fascination with debt, taking special aim at abusive leveraged buy-outs of corporations. He recalls memorable witnesses and lawyers, tells how he determined who was lying and explains what he did to reduce the length of trials. Perhaps most informative of all, he describes how a judge makes law rather than just grabbing a rule off the shelf. A former campaign worker for Robert Kennedy, Judge Queenan shows his passion for politics. He gives a critique of the Supreme Courts 2000 decision in Bush v. Gore, which handed the presidency to George W. Bush. As one who demonstrated against the war in Iraq before the war began, he examines the wars terrible consequences and traces its long political fallout that contributed to the election of Barack Obama, for whom the judge delivers a unique panegyric.

Book Meows from the Manse

Download or read book Meows from the Manse written by Barry Blackstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a cat lover and a Christian, then this book is for you. Seventeen years in the making, Meows from the Manse is a collection of remembrances and reflections from a Maine pastor about his "cat of a lifetime" and the years they lived together at the parsonage (manse) of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ellsworth, Maine. Eddie was a stray tomcat that eventually worked his way into the heart of this reluctant minister, despite the fact that this man of the cloth never liked cats. Surrounded by cats in his younger years on a family farm, and always living with a cat or two because of his wife's love affair with cats (Coleen's last cat would live twenty-two years--sixteen of them with Eddie), and his kid's love of cats, the exploits and experience with Eddie would change this pastor's mind about cats, teaching him the biblical challenge of Job 12:7: "But ask now the beasts and they shall teach thee!" Relive the years with Eddie and the Pearl (Coleen's cat) and the enriching spiritual lessons this preacher learned from his constant companion and friend through the challenging years as a pastor of a small coastal church, the death of a thirty-nine-year-old son, and the passing of his dear wife of forty-eight years. The cat tales begin with Eddie's arrival across from the pastor's church and end with the passing of Eddie from throat cancer. In between are insights you might not believe from the Bible, but for the author were some of the best sermons he heard during that period of his life. Without a doubt for this widower, the messages (meows) from Eddie were some of the best he ever heard, but he will let you be the judge!

Book Everyday Ethics

  • Author : Michael Lamb
  • Publisher : Georgetown University Press
  • Release : 2019-10-01
  • ISBN : 1626167087
  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book Everyday Ethics written by Michael Lamb and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What might we learn if the study of ethics focused less on hard cases and more on the practices of everyday life? In Everyday Ethics, Michael Lamb and Brian Williams gather some of the world’s leading scholars and practitioners of moral theology (including some GUP authors) to explore that question in dialogue with anthropology and the social sciences. Inspired by the work of Michael Banner, these scholars cross disciplinary boundaries to analyze the ethics of ordinary practices—from eating, learning, and loving thy neighbor to borrowing and spending, using technology, and working in a flexible economy. Along the way, they consider the moral and methodological questions that emerge from this interdisciplinary dialogue and assess the implications for the future of moral theology.
