Book The Big Book of Rogues and Villains

Download or read book The Big Book of Rogues and Villains written by Otto Penzler and published by Vintage Crime/Black Lizard. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Award-winning editor Otto Penzler's new anthology brings together the most cunning, ruthless, and brilliant criminals in mystery fiction, for the biggest compendium of bad guys (and girls) ever assembled. The best mysteries--whether detective, historical, police procedural, cozy, or comedy--have one thing in common: a memorable perpetrator. For every Sherlock Holmes or Sam Spade in noble pursuit, there's a Count Dracula, a Lester Leith, or a Jimmy Valentine. These are the rogues and villains who haunt our imaginations--and who often have more in common with their heroic counterparts than we might expect. Now, for the first time ever, Otto Penzler gathers the iconic traitors, thieves, con men, sociopaths, and killers who have crept through the mystery canon over the past 150 years, captivating and horrifying readers in equal measure. The 72 handpicked stories in this collection introduce us to the most depraved of psyches, from iconic antiheroes like Maurice Leblanc's Arsène Lupin and Sax Rohmer's Dr. Fu Manchu to contemporary delinquents like Lawrence Block's Ehrengraf and Donald Westlake's Dortmunder, and include unforgettable tales by Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, Washington Irving, Jack London, H.G. Wells, Sinclair Lewis, O. Henry, Edgar Wallace, Leslie Charteris, Erle Stanley Gardner, Edward D. Hoch, Max Allan Collins, Loren D. Estleman, and many more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lingo Dan: A Novel Lest this book perturb too mightily some of our Gaboriaus of criticism, let me set down here the fact that my hero and his companion were first introduced to the world by me in 1894. Through the San Franmsco Argonaut. A judge, more given to austerity than len1 ency, saw fit to remark that lingo dan was a new type in American fiction. In that be lief I still venture to continue, despite the fact that he has, since first quietly making his bow, had many rivals more conspicuous than himself in the line of thought and con duct he adorns. If it be objected against me that I have delayed nearly ten years in thus continuing the chronicle begun in 1894, I retort that even this has taken a deal of tem erity; my gentleman is still alive, and there is no knowing what form his reproaches for these indiscretions of mine may take. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disappearance of a Reno couple from Prince William Sound, Alaska, along with a half eaten dog, apparently by killer whales, raises suspicion that a certain orca pack, called the A-T pack, led by a particularly sharp and aggressive female, the queen, may be responsible. An exploration geologist and his wife, Alaska residents and both interested in orcas, carry out investigations in the A-T pack's home waters to learn more about their behavior and habits. They are joined by a marine biologist orca specialist from southern California. A number of people are determined to communicate with the orcas, including a psychologist from Canada, a rock band from Vancouver, BC. and music for the orcas via underwater speakers. Some kids from Anchorage attempt to communicate with the whales with near-fatal consequences. Accompany the intelligent orcas as they hunt, kill and eat various types of fish and animals. They also have fun. The three investigators decide to test the interest of the orcas, under federal and state supervision, in a totally strange food to help determine if they might kill and eat humans. Small pigs, a human food, were decided upon as the best choice for testing orca reaction to strange food animals. The test is successful and part of the A-T pack is orca led but not for long.

Book Holy Bingo the Lingo of Eden Jumpin Jehosophat and the Land of Nod

Download or read book Holy Bingo the Lingo of Eden Jumpin Jehosophat and the Land of Nod written by Les Harding and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity abounds with fascinating, little-known trivia. Gas station attendants, for example, enjoy their own patron saint. So do stamp collectors, truss makers and sailors in the Bolivian navy. Jesus and Judas were common names in the biblical period, and Jesus of Nazareth had a brother named Judas. The forbidden fruit was more likely an apricot than an apple, and Delilah hired a barber to cut Sampson's hair. This dictionary of miscellany combs the annals of Christian esoterica, offering the most intriguing facts that are often forgotten, overlooked or ignored. Departing from the standard subject matter, this work serves as an unruly companion to the typical Bible dictionary. Nearly 1500 entries range from Aaron's beard (a popular name for Saint John's wort) to zounds (an antiquated Christian swear word). Information is cross-referenced and includes numerous quotations.
