Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of Lincoln Nearly three hundred years ago a Dutch ship sailed up the river to Jamestown bearing a strange cargo. The cargo was twenty negroes, and the were sold as slaves to the colonists. This was the way in which negro slavery began in this country. The buying and selling of men and making them serve their masters without pay went on for many years. As the United States grew larger this traffic in men grew until at last people began to be afraid slavery would spread over all the country. At first only a few people thought slavery was wrong. These talked and wrote about it until more and more people joined them in this belief. The quarrel grew and grew and waged fiercely between the people who believed in slavery and those who did not. Then at last this country was plunged into a cruel war. The Northern people who wished to put an end to slavery fought against the Southern people who owned the slaves. This war lasted several years. Many brave men died and many precious lives were lost that the negro might be free. The man who did more than any other to free the slaves and keep this country as one nation was Abraham Lincoln. Life in the Kentucky wilderness was harsh and severe. When game was plentiful, the family ate freely of grouse, turkey, bear, and deer. When it was scarce the family board consisted mainly of corn meal and potatoes. The members of the Lincoln household toiled long and hard from dawn until sunset. Even little Abe had his regular chores to perform each day - carrying water, filling the wood box, pick ing wild berries and grapes, and riding the horse when his father plowed. Book Lincoln Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln No man has expressed the feelings of America so well as President Lincoln, and no man in this or any other land has been more truly great. He was the child of poor parents. He was born in a log cabin. He went to school but little, because he lived where there were no schools. When a boy and young man he worked hard with his hands and it gave him a healthy body. He studied a few good books and it gave him a clear head. He liked history. He mastered mathematics and did surveying. He was interested in politics, and his mind' grasped the laws easily. He read about the principles of government, and thought about the rights of men. He became a lawyer. He was elected to the Legislature of Illinois, and then to the Congress of the United States. The experiences thus gained helped to make him a suc cessful lawyer._ He was much interested in the affairs of the people, in universal justice, and in the good of his country. He thought for himself, and he thought hard and straight. He had a keen sense of humor and a fine gift of wit. He wrote so plainly, and he spoke in public so clearly, that all the people could under stand him. But he had even greater qualities. His habits were simple and he lived without great show. He was true and sin cere, and the people believed in him. All these things made him a leader, a statesman, and a very great man. The country was deeply agitated about slavery. It had existed in all of the states in earlier years, and it then existed in all of the Southern States, where there were five millions of slaves. He abhorred human bondage, but he abhorred war also. The laws allowed slavery in the South, and he thought it impossible to change the laws and abolish slavery without bringing on a war between the Northern and the isouthern States. He hoped for an easier and better way. But many tried to carry slavery into the new states and territories that were being 'formed beyond the Mississippi river. He was Opposed to that, whether war came or not. He spoke hundreds of times against it, and what he said made him President of the United States. This brought on a dreadful war, which lasted four years. Great armies of citizens were organized to save the Union. Half a million of the best men in the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unfathomable Lincoln And so, year after year, an ever increasing army of students and followers of Lincoln, seeking to know and understand the man, gaze with awe and wonder at the perfect gem of sculpture that a grateful nation has erected in its capital, where for five long, eventful, and heartbreaking years, he watched his country engage in suicidal war. They journey to his birthplace in Kentucky; and they climb the little hill in south ern Indiana where rests the tired body of Nancy Hanks, and where she looks wistfully on fields and hills that once heard the laughter and song of her Hoosier boy. Not satisfied, they' walk through the little country graveyard in Coles County and gaze on the graves of Tom Lincoln, and that other great heart, Sally Bush, who was all of a mother to him. In Vandalia, they wander through the halls of the old capitol, hopefully listening for the sound of his voice; while in his old home at Eighth and Jackson Streets, in Springfield, they wait in vain for the music of his footsteps. From here they go to its ceme tery, and wander aimlessly over the green grass near the spot where now he rests, not wondering that he sleeps after a life so full of action. They climb the steep hill in the cemetery at Petersburg and read the immortal words on the stone over the grave of Ann Rutledge. In search of more to satisfy the cravings of their spirits for intimacy with the soul of Lincoln, they journey around the towns that once composed the Eighth Illinois Judicial Circuit, so rich in memories of him. But none of these suffice. Finally and lastly, they must go to] New Salem, to its reconstructed stores and cabins; and walk ing down its single thoroughfare they find in the peace and quiet of this little spot something of spiritual perception of Abraham Lincoln. Book Lincoln Birthday Service

Download or read book Lincoln Birthday Service written by Mrs. Jessie Palmer Weber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln Birthday Service: Address In 1816, when Abraham Lincoln was between seven and eight years of age, the family went to Indiana to find there a new home. Here Thomas Lincoln, the father, built a primitive lodge, or what was called by the pioneers a half - faced camp. It was closed on but three sides, the open side being towards the south. It was intended for temporary shelter only, but the Lincolns lived in it for a year. In 1818 Lincoln's mother died. She had borne so much hardship, so much deprivation, and she died in the wide forest, died as the leaf dies, leaving nothing to her son but the memory of her love. Can there be a more pitiful story than that of Thomas Lincoln and his little son, assisted by the relatives, young boys to whom poor Nancy had been kind, hewing out for her __a rude coffin from a rough log, and then laying the pathetic remains away, with no preacher or teacher to make even a brief prayer? It is said that the first letter Abraham Lincoln ever wrote was to a minister, Elder David Elkin, asking him to come and preach a sermon over this poor mother. And the minister did come, months after, and comforted the boy and his sister with the long delayed sermon. The little Sarah was only eleven years old, and the labors of keeping the home were too arduous for her. The next year, 1819, Thomas Lincoln left his little family and went back to Kentucky on a visit. Dennis Hanks. Mr. Lincoln's cousin, quaintly says: We all knowed what Tom went for, but we did not think he would have any luck; he was known to be so shiftless and such a poor provider. But he did have luck, the best of luck, for the widower brought back to the Indiana home a new wife, who was in every way and in everysense a mother to the forlorn little family, and was the means ofbringing some comfort into their lives. Young Abraham loved her dearly and she helped him all she could to get the education for which his soul thirsted; he was a dutiful son to her, as long as he lived. On March 1, 1830, when Abraham Lincoln was just twenty-one years of age, he, with his father and fam ily, moved to Illinois; so that while Mr. Lincoln was not born in Illinois, he was a citizen of the State dur ing all the years of his manhood. The family settled about ten miles west of Decatur, and here Lincoln helped to clear the ground for a new cabin and fenced the clearing with walnut rails which he helped to split. Some of the rails, perhaps you will remember, were brought into the Decatur convention of 1860, when Mr. Lincoln's name was before the country - not be fore the State Convention - as a probable candidate for the Presidency, and these rails are now historic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and New Salem The edition of the little pamphlet explanatory of the Objects and purposes of this League, termed by it a Prospectus of The Old Salem Lincoln League for the Restoration of New Salem, the Early Home of Abraham Lincoln, has been exhausted and it has become necessary to supply something in its place. We as sumed that the people generally' knew that New Salem was Lin; coln's Alma Mater, that he came to New Salem a friendless, over grown boy, uncouth and uneducated, with a knowledge of only the barest rudiments of reading, writing and arithmetic; that during the six-years of his residence here, his character was formed; his education completed, his name of honest Abe ac quired; the pathway his feet were to tread during his future life blazed, and his great heart broken by the loss of his first love, the one great romance and tragedy of his life. We find, however, that many of our people have been so en grossed with other matters, more personal to them, that they have failed to acquaint themselves with this phase of Lincoln's life.
