Book excerpt: Agnes' plummet inside the Morris Island lighthouse became the stuff of local lore and ghost stories. But was her actual death driven by mental illness? Or, did the lighthouse keeper play a part? The teacher? This well-researched historical literary fiction illumines struggles meant to stay shrouded in a time when patience was a virtue, a lighthouse saved lives, and an earthquake was the furthest notion in the minds of those living in South Carolina's lowcountry.

Book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics written by D. Broek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-07-31 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the use of fracture mechanics for the solution of practical problems; academic rigor is not at issue and dealt with only in as far as it improves insight and understanding; it often concerns secondary errors in engineering. Knowledge of (ignorance of) such basic input as loads and stresses in practical cases may cause errors far overshadowing those introduced by shortcomings of fracture mechanics and necessary approximations; this is amply demonstrated in the text. I have presented more than three dozen 40-hour courses on fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis, so that I have probably more experience in teaching the subject than anyone else. I learned more than the students, and became cognizant of difficulties and of the real concerns in applications. In particular I found, how a subject should be explained to appeal to the practicing engineer to demonstrate that his practical problem can indeed be solved with engineering methods. This experience is reflected in the presenta tions in this book. Sufficient background is provided for an understanding of the issues, but pragamatism prevails. Mathematics cannot be avoided, but they are presented in a way that appeals to insight and intuition, in lieu of formal derivations which would show but the mathematical skill of the writer.

Book Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture

Download or read book Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture written by K. E. Easterling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture contains the proceedings of the Interdisciplinary Conference on the Mechanisms of Deformation and Fracture held at the University of Luleå in Sweden on September 20-22, 1978. The papers explore the mechanisms underlying deformation and fracture of materials such as pearlite, metals, quartz, soils, and rocks. Results of theoretical and experimental studies on topics ranging from electromagnetic detection of low-cycle fatigue to stress and strain distribution in two-phase systems are presented. This book is comprised of 37 chapters and begins with a discussion on the interrelationships among solid mechanics, earth sciences, and material sciences. Subsequent chapters focus on the low-cycle behavior of case hardened steel; deformation and shear of normally consolidated flocculated kaolin; analytical modeling in inelasticity; creep mechanisms in clay; and initiation of crack growth at full plasticity. Plastic flow mechanisms and the rheological properties of the Earth's mantle are also examined, along with the fracture of glassy thermoplastics. The final chapter presents a thermodynamic model of consolidation in cohesive soils. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, and earth sciences.

Book The Correlation of Nondestructive Test Techniques with the Fracture Behavior of ATJ S Graphite

Download or read book The Correlation of Nondestructive Test Techniques with the Fracture Behavior of ATJ S Graphite written by W. L. Shelton and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected specimens of ATJ-S graphite were nondestructively evaluated and tensile tested in gas-bearing test facilities. The nondestructive test methods used on billets, specimen blanks, and finished specimens were visual inspection, alcohol wipe, radiography, and radiographic enhancement techniques. Correlations were made between nondestructive test indications and fracture location and strength. Low density areas were found to be the predominant weakening defect in this graphite. Fractographic examination of the fractured specimens revealed flaws which could be correlated with those flaws detected nondestructively and predicted from Griffith's theory. (Author).

Book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics written by R.C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes, 9 and 10, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center, Nagoya, Japan on July 15, 16, 17, 1991. These proceedings constitute the fifth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium, volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, and volumes 5 and 6 from a 1981 symposium all of which were held at The Pennsylvania State University. Volumes 7 and 8 are from the 1985 symposium which was held at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The theme ofthis conference, as for the previous four, focused on the mechanical behavior ofceramic materials in terms of the characteristics ofcracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture processes and mechanisms. The 82 contributed papers by over 150 authors and co-authors represent the current state of that field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems ofinterest to those scientists and engineers concerned with brittle fracture.

Book Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of High Risk Parts

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of High Risk Parts written by Bahram Farahmand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preliminary stage of designing new structural hardware that must perform a given mission in a fluctuating load environment, there are several factors the designers should consider. Trade studies for different design configurations should be performed and, based on strength and weight considerations, among others, an optimum configuration selected. The selected design must be able to withstand the environment in question without failure. Therefore, a comprehen sive structural analysis that consists of static, dynamic, fatigue, and fracture is necessary to ensure the integrity of the structure. During the past few decades, fracture mechanics has become a necessary discipline for the solution of many structural problems. These problems include the prevention of failures resulting from preexisting cracks in the parent material, welds or that develop under cyclic loading environment during the life of the structure. The importance of fatigue and fracture in nuclear, pressure vessel, aircraft, and aerospace structural hardware cannot be overemphasized where safety is of utmost concern. This book is written for the designer and strength analyst, as well as for the material and process engineer who is concerned with the integrity of the structural hardware under load-varying environments in which fatigue and frac ture must be given special attention. The book is a result of years of both acade mic and industrial experiences that the principal author and co-authors have accumulated through their work with aircraft and aerospace structures.
