Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For too many students, first-year contracts is a heartache, plaguing them perpetually with this demoralizing thought: "I do my work, I go to class, I listen, I participate, and still - I don't know what it's all about or what my teacher wants me to know." We're here to spare you that sorrowful plight - to grab hold of contract law, tear away its veil of mystery, and flood it with such bright light as lets you see it for what it is: a course, like any other - easily understandable with ordinary work and thought"--

Book The Sexual Contract

Download or read book The Sexual Contract written by Carole Pateman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carole Pateman is one of the foremost political theorists writing in English today. In this outstanding new work, she presents a major reinterpretation of modern political theory. She shows how standard discussions of social contract theory tell only half the story. The sexual contract which establishes modern patriarchy and the political right of men over women is never mentioned. In a wide-ranging and scholarly discussion, Pateman examines the significance of the political fictions of the original contract and the slave contract. She also offers a sweeping challenge to conventional understandings - of both left and right - of actual contracts in everyday life: the marriage contract, the employment contract, the prostitution contract and the new surrogacy contract. By bringing a feminist perspective to bear on the contradictions and paradoxes surrounding women and contract and the relation between the sexes, she is able to shed new light on the fundamental problems of freedom and subordination. The Sexual Contract will become a classic text in the politics of gender and will be of major interest to students of social and political theory and philosophy, women's studies, sociology and jurisprudence.

Book excerpt: If you ask legendary football coach Lou Holtz about his greatest accomplishment, he doesn’t talk about winning a national championship at the University of Notre Dame. Instead, he’s most proud of his fifty-nine-year marriage to Beth and raising their four successful children together. In A Lifetime of Love, Holtz offers couples young and old practical advice on marriage and parenting gleaned from his fifty-nine year marriage. He shares stories from he and Beth’s life away from the football field that reveal the couple’s deep faith in God and commitment to each other and their children. The Holtzes faced many challenges throughout their marriage: Lou’s coaching jobs meant he was often away from home and caused their family to move multiple times. Beth suffered a long battle with illness. Through it all their marriage—and family—remained strong because of the practical lessons they learned as they rode the ups and downs of life. In this inspiring story, you’ll find Lou and Beth’s powerful examples for successful marriage and parenting, including: Find ways to connect daily. Make sure your children feel loved and appreciated. Be intentional about time together. Learn from each other and accommodate one another’s needs. Prioritize faith and prayer. The Holtzes intended to write this book together, but after Beth’s death Lou decided to celebrate his wife’s memory by completing the story of their life together. Their children—Luanne, Skip, Kevin, Elizabeth, and their spouses—also share memories of growing up in the Holtz family, adding their voices to the story of their parents’ love.

Book Analyses for Durability and System Design Lifetime

Download or read book Analyses for Durability and System Design Lifetime written by Joseph H. Saleh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An issue in engineering design is a system's design lifetime. Economists study durability choice problems for consumer goods but seldom address lifetime problem(s) of complex engineering systems. The issues for engineering systems are complex and multidisciplinary and require an understanding of the 'technicalities of durability' and the economic implications of the marginal cost of durability and value maximization. Commonly the design lifetime for an infrastructure is set between 30 and 70 years. Satellite lifetimes are also assigned arbitrarily or with limited analysis. This book provides a systemic qualitative and quantitative approach to these problems addressing, first, the technicality of durability, second, the marginal cost of durability, and third, the durability choice problem for complex engineering systems with network externalities (competition and market uncertainty) and obsolescence effects (technology evolution). Since the analyses are system-specific, a satellite example is used to illustrate the essence and provide a quantitative application of said analyses.

Book excerpt: A Life Without End is a fictional portrayal of Stan Miller, a man with a lifelong yearning for an afterlife that began as a child when his beloved pet dog died unexpectedly and he was too young to properly comprehend its death. Despite finding and marrying the woman of his dreams, raising a family, and establishing himself as a respected college biology professor, the finality and universality of death continued to haunt him throughout his entire life, triggering an exploration of several major religions, psychotherapy, and finally, science, all in quest of somehow eluding death and achieving immortality, or at least a greatly extended life span. In his early sixties, Stan develops a fatal disease (ALS) and, despite his wifes many (thoughtful) reservations, ultimately decides to have his body cryonically preserved (frozen). He is returned to life sixty-one years later (in the year 2068) after a cure is found for his disease and discovers a very different world where the altered nature of human relationships are even more difficult to comprehend than the baffling technology surrounding him.

This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normally, forced heirship is primarily associated with a restraint of the decedent's testamentary freedom of disposition. Nevertheless, to effectively protect the forced heirs, forced heirship systems usually also contain various mechanisms to restrain the decedent's lifetime freedom of disposition. Scholars and courts have been debating the proper characterization of these mechanisms in conflicts of laws for decades. Raphael de Barros Fritz addresses the many open questions surrounding this issue by analysing the characterization of forced heirship mechanisms in the laws of Louisiana and Germany.

Book Retirement Provision in Scary Markets

Download or read book Retirement Provision in Scary Markets written by Hazel Bateman and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have witnessed a global move towards private provision for retirement through individual defined contribution pensions at the expense of publicly provided and employer-sponsored defined benefit pensions. As a consequence, workers and retirees are becoming increasingly exposed to uncertainties in financial, labour and economic markets. The contributors to this book analyse the implications for retirement income policy, workers and retirees in view of the current climate of heightened exposure to scary markets. The implications of a broad range of scary market scenarios are presented, and novel solutions prescribed. Retirement incomes across a number of countries including the US, the UK, Japan and Australia are explored, and uncertainties examined include: extreme stock price volatility; discontinuous labour market participation; and regulatory failure and macroeconomic instability. Concluding with the observation that regulatory reforms could be almost as scary as the underlying macroeconomic conditions, this book will prove a fascinating read for scholars, researchers, practitioners and policymakers with an interest in pensions and pension policy, financial economics and public sector economics.

Book A Factual Assessment of the Draft Common Frame of Reference

Download or read book A Factual Assessment of the Draft Common Frame of Reference written by Luisa Anatoniolli and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a case-based assessment of the Draft Common Frame of Reference carried out by the Common Core Evaluating Group, which gathers a number of well-established and younger scholars coming from Eastern and Western countries of the European Union using the working method of the research project "The Common Core of European Private Law" (www.common-core.org). The aim of the assessment is to test how the Draft Common Frame of Reference could work when applied in different national legal systems. To this end, a number of factual situations, i.e. hypothetical cases, have been drafted by the authors and solved through the application of both national rules and rules of the DCFR. Thereby, similarities and differences in the outcome of the cases have been analysed, together with difficulties - if any - in the application of the "Principles of European Law". The Common Core assessment has been carried out as part of the "Joint Network of European Private Law" Project (CoPECL), financed by the EU Commission.
