Book excerpt: We live in unprecedented times, with increased polarization, complexity, and uncertainty. It's easy to get lost, feel frenetic or paralyzed, without inspiration or a clear path to move forward. How can we keep perspective and lead our lives with a defined purpose, knowing fully who we are in the midst of the chaos? If you are looking to pause, reflect and create space as an individual or as a community for discovering your way forward from your essence, this book is for you. Life Re-Vision is a journey to craft your new map, the one that honors the fullness of who you are, and that evokes your passion and your gifts for the world. Full of metaphor and imagery from nature, Life Re-Vision is a soulful step by step process to review your past, and re-vision your future in the most important aspects of your life. This path has you strengthen your inner compass, connect with your creative drive, and identify the worlds where you truly belong. The six steps of the Life Re-Vision methodology are: 1. Bones: Unearth the artifacts and relics of your existence so far to connect with your passion and creative drive. 2. Seeds: Honor the essential stories of your life to rediscover your virtues and core essence. 3. Winds: Declare the ideals and forces that guide your life for a renewed motivation and stronger sense of direction. 4. Territories: Map the worlds you inhabit and where you aspire to contribute, strengthening your commitment and sense of belonging. 5. Ecology: Deepen your understanding of your inner ecology of gifts and virtues and the outer ecology of what the world needs right now 6. Fruits: Visualize the legacy that you intend to leave behind, that creates a better world and adds to your fulfillment day to day. This book is meant to promote belonging to oneself and to the world. This book is a tool for a new kind of conversation in communities and organizations using new language that enhances intimacy, connection with self, others, and nature, as well as contribution to a meaningful purpose.

Gaines Award for Literary Excellence Finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Fiction Finalist for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize Finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award Mitchell S. Jackson grew up black in a neglected neighborhood in America's whitest city, Portland, Oregon. In the '90s, those streets and beyond had fallen under the shadow of crack cocaine and its familiar mayhem. In his commanding autobiographical novel, Mitchell writes what it was to come of age in that time and place, with a break-out voice that's nothing less than extraordinary. The Residue Years switches between the perspectives of a young man, Champ, and his mother, Grace. Grace is just out of a drug treatment program, trying to stay clean and get her kids back. Champ is trying to do right by his mom and younger brothers, and dreams of reclaiming the only home he and his family have ever shared. But selling crack is the only sure way he knows to achieve his dream. In this world of few options and little opportunity, where love is your strength and your weakness, this family fights for family and against what tears one apart. Honest in its portrayal, with cadences that dazzle, The Residue Years signals the arrival of a writer set to awe.

  • ISBN : 1315420759
  • Pages : 427 pages

Book excerpt: Carolyn Ellis is the leading writer in the move toward personal, autobiographical writing as a strategy for academic research. In addition to her landmark books Final Negotiations and The Ethnographic I, she has authored numerous stories that demonstrate the emotional power and academic value of autoethnography. This volume collects a dozen of Ellis’s stories—about the loss of her husband, brother and mother; of growing up in small town Virginia; about the work of the ethnographer; about emotionally charged life issues such as abortion, caregiving, and love. Atop these captivating stories, she adds the component of meta-autoethography—a layering of new interpretations, reflections, and vignettes to her older work. An important new work for qualitative researchers and a student-friendly text for courses.

Book The Art of Revision

Download or read book The Art of Revision written by Peter Ho Davies and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth volume in the Art of series takes an expansive view of revision—on the page and in life In The Art of Revision: The Last Word, Peter Ho Davies takes up an often discussed yet frequently misunderstood subject. He begins by addressing the invisibility of revision—even though it’s an essential part of the writing process, readers typically only see a final draft, leaving the practice shrouded in mystery. To combat this, Davies pulls examples from his novels The Welsh Girl and The Fortunes, as well as from the work of other writers, including Flannery O’Connor, Carmen Machado, and Raymond Carver, shedding light on this slippery subject. Davies also looks beyond literature to work that has been adapted or rewritten, such as books made into films, stories rewritten by another author, and the practice of retconning in comics and film. In an affecting frame story, Davies recounts the story of a violent encounter in his youth, which he then retells over the years, culminating in a final telling at the funeral of his father. In this way, the book arrives at an exhilarating mode of thinking about revision—that it is the writer who must change, as well as the writing. The result is a book that is as useful as it is moving, one that asks writers to reflect upon themselves and their writing.

Book VISION and RE VISION

  • Author : Beena. G
  • Publisher : Notion Press
  • Release : 2019-07-15

Download or read book VISION and RE VISION written by Beena. G and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How different would mythological narratives be, if women voiced their perspectives? Amidst great wars, superhuman heroes and their ‘glorious’ victories, is there a place for women? Are ‘great wars’ limited to armed conflicts between armies of men on the battlefields? Do women have their own battles before, after and beyond the confines of wars in the epic narratives of India? Both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have integrated into our social and cultural fabric, and permeated into the myriad layers of life across genres and media. It is a common practice to revisit mythological landscapes and realign the lenses to look at them afresh from different perspectives. Re-renderings often bring in multiple interpretations that are creative and critical, adding variety and currency to the original narratives. Vision and Re-vision traces the lives of seven marginalized women from revisionist works against the central motif of war. It follows the pursuits of Ganga, Surpanakha, Uruvi, Sita, Urmila, Satyavati and Draupadi to understand their struggles and victories as women. Analyzing textual spaces provided to women, it explores their marginalized voices and their resistance patterns. These, in turn, establish new narratives of subversion and reclaim the voices and identities of women from the margins. A sound theoretical framework enables a comprehensive understanding of feminism and its distinct Indo-centric identity.
