Book The Life of a Balinese Temple

Download or read book The Life of a Balinese Temple written by Hildred Geertz and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should a temple be seen as a work of art, its carvers as artists, its worshipers as art critics and patrons? What is a temple (and its art) to the people who make and use it? Noted anthropologist Hildred Geertz attempts to answer these and other questions in this unique look at transformations in material culture and social relations over time in a village temple in Bali. Throughout Geertz offers insightful glimpses into what the statues, structures, and designs of Pura Désa Batuan convey to those who worship there, deepening our understanding of how a village community evaluates workmanship and imagery. Following an introduction to the temple and villagers of Batuan, Geertz explores the problematics of the Western concept of "art" as a guiding framework in research. She goes on to outline the many different kinds of work—ideational as well as physical—undertaken in connection with the temple and the social institutions that enable, constrain, and motivate their creation. Finally, the "art-works" themselves are presented, set within the intricate sociocultural contexts of their making. Using the history of Batuan as the main framework for discussing each piece, Geertz looks at the carvings from the perspective of their makers, each generation occupying a different social situation. She confronts concepts such as "aesthetics," "representation," "sacredness," and "universality" and the dilemmas they create in field research and ethnographic writing. Recent temple carvings from the tumultuous and complex period that followed the expulsion of the Dutch and the increasing globalization and commercialization of Balinese society demonstrate yet again that any anthropology of art must also be historical.

Book Time Rites and Festivals in Bali

Download or read book Time Rites and Festivals in Bali written by Jean Couteau and published by BAB Publishing Indonesia. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gregorian, or Western, calendar is the most widely used and recognized calendar system in the world—but that doesn't mean it's the only one in use. The concept of time in Bali, and the inherent importance of rites and festivals on daily life, combined to create a calendar system that is bewilderingly complex but intriguing in its history. For the first time, a book has been written which unravels the difficulty of the Balinese calendar system and makes it accessible to a general audience. Time, Rites and Festivals in Bali, written by two recognized specialists of the culture, is a two part exploration of a breathtaking calendar system—and includes 62 specially commissioned drawings and a selection of photographs of rites along with wooden and painted calendars from museums around the world. From a lively introduction to the distinctly Balinese concepts of time, to an explanation of the two main calendars of Bali, to an in-depth discussion on the myth of Watugunung which is the basis for the origin of the main calendar system, Time, Rites and Festivals in Bali is a dynamic introduction to the spiritual and daily rituals that evolved at the core of this island nation.

Book Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent

Download or read book Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent written by Leo Suryadinata and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a bold project recording the lives of a particular group of Southeast Asians. Most of the people whose biographies are included here have settled down in the ten countries that constitute the region. Each of them has either self-identified as Chinese or is comfortable to be known as someone of Chinese ancestry. There are also those who were born in China or elsewhere who came here to work and do business, including seeking help from others who have ethnic Chinese connections. With the political and economic conditions of the region in a great state of flux for the past two centuries, it is impossible to find consistency in the naming process. Confucius had stressed that correct names make for the best relationships. In this case, Professor Leo Suryadinata has been pursuing for decades the elusive goal of finding the right name to give to the large numbers of people who have, in one way or another, made their homes in, or made some difference to, Southeast Asia. I believe that, when he and his colleagues selected the biographies to be included here, they have taken a big step towards the rectification of identities for many leading personalities. In so doing, he has done us all a great service." - Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore

Download or read book Vi u s Children written by Ute Hüsken and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vaikhanasas, a group of Brahmanic priests in the Visnu temples of south India, can look back on a long and turbulent history, that is characterized by the effort of claiming their status against rivaling priests. Central to this monograph is a controversy, ongoing for centuries, as to what makes a person eligible to perform the rituals in Visnu temples: does birth or an initiation create the ideal intermediary between the god and humans? Since the 14th century CE the discussion in the relevant Sanskrit texs centers around the question of whether the Vaikhanasas priests must undergo an initiation including a branding on the upper arms, or whether their particular prenatal life-cycle ritual visnubali makes them eligible to perform temple ritual. As hereditary temple priests the Vaikhanasas' own stance is explicit: they are Visnu's own children, preordained for temple service already before birth. In addition to the textual perspective, three instances of local conflicts from the 19th/20th centuries about the question of whether the Vaikhanasas require an initiation are analysed in their contexts. Furthermore, three examples of present day performances of the crucial ritual visnubali are presented and interpreted in the light of the relation between text and performance and from the perspective of the acting priests' ritual competence. The book also contains a DVD with some of the video-coverage of the three visnubali performances.
