Book The Heroic Age of Diving

Download or read book The Heroic Age of Diving written by Jerry Kuntz and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the first three decades of underwater exploration in antebellum America. Beginning in 1837, some of the most brilliant engineers of America’s Industrial Revolution turned their attention to undersea technology. Inventors developed practical hard-helmet diving suits, as well as new designs of submarines, diving bells, floating cranes, and undersea explosives. These innovations were used to clear shipping lanes, harvest pearls, mine gold, and wage war. All of these underwater technologies were brought together by entrepreneurs, treasure-hunters, and daring divers in the 1850s to salvage three infamous shipwrecks on Lake Erie, each of which had involved the loss of hundreds of lives, as well as the worldly goods of the passengers. The prospect of treasure, combined with the national notoriety of these disasters, soon attracted the attention of local adventurers and the country’s leading divers and marine engineers. In The Heroic Age of Diving, Jerry Kuntz shares the fascinating stories of the pioneers of underwater invention and the brave divers who employed the new technologies as they raced with—and against—marine engineers to salvage the tragic wrecks of Lake Erie. “Jerry Kuntz has filled in a previously blank page in the story of diving—and done it well. The Heroic Age of Diving tells the story not only of the development of salvage technology but also the human side of this always-dangerous and often-deadly career. This is not a tale for the faint of heart (‘helmet squeeze’ is a gruesome fate), but one well worth reading for those interested in early technology and the men brave (or foolish) enough to gamble their lives using it. This book is a window on an unexplored (and unexpected) world, and the author deserves great credit for bringing it back into the light.” — Chuck Veit, author of Raising Missouri: John Gowen and the Salvage of the U.S. Steam Frigate Missouri, 1843–1852 “The Heroic Age of Diving is both very interesting and very important. Having spent over twenty years researching and publishing general diving history, I am confident that this book will fill an important gap in the nation’s diving history.” — Leslie Leaney, Cofounder, Historical Diving Society

Book excerpt: Chuck Nicklin has loved the water ever since spending his childhood days on a Massachusetts lake. When his family moved to California in the 1940s, Chuck literally immersed himself in the emerging sports of freediving and scuba diving. He became an expert spearfisherman, but it wasn't long before he tired of spearfishing and opted to try his hand at underwater photography. The rest, as the say, is history. Nicklin's book, Camera Man, chronicles his adventurous life, from his early days as owner of the Diving Locker to a career as an underwater photographer for National Geographic and as a cinematographer on major motion pictures including The Deep, Never Say Never Again and The Abyss. In Camera Man, Nicklin revisits the dawning days of scuba diving and shares stories of how his career as an underwater cameraman unfolded, from the day he became known as "the man who rode a whale," to his adventures traveling around the world diving with and filming majestic humpback whales and fearsome-looking great white sharks. Included are guest essays from Nicklin's friends who've traveled with him, learned from him, and shared exciting adventures with him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightful period piece of Paris in the late 1880's, We'll to the Woods No More (Les lauriers sont coupés) retains its importance as the first use of the monologue intérieur and the inspiration for the stream-of-consciousness technique perfected by James Joyce. Dujardin's charming tale, told with insight and irony, recounts what goes on in the mind of a young man-about-town in love with a Parisian actress. Mallarmé described the poetry of the telling as "the instant seized by the throat." Originally published in France in 1887, the first English translation (by Joyce scholar Stuart Gilbert) was published by New Directions in 1938. In 1957 Leon Edel's perceptive historical essay reintroduced the book as "the rare and beautiful case of a minor work which launched a major movement."

Book Extraordinary Adventures Hardcover Bob Soto Scuba Pioneer In His Own Words

Download or read book Extraordinary Adventures Hardcover Bob Soto Scuba Pioneer In His Own Words written by Suzy Soto and published by . This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cayman was known as "The Islands that time forgot." However, Bob Soto woke it up when he started the world's first scuba diving company in 1957. He brought it to great success with his talent for marketing. Bob produced Cayman's first promotional film, to advertise the island's sun, sea, sand and amazing underwater beauty. With his permission, the Department of Tourism used the movie as their main advertising tool for many years. It was not long before the Cayman Islands became the top scuba diving destination in the world and Bob Soto's Diving became internationally renowned alongside it. Bob provided the only sea search-and-rescue operation from the time he returned to Cayman. Many times day and night Bob was called out to assist in searching for people and boats. He was always available to help anyone. His experience with the US Navy carried over well into his operations here. Bob also championed conservation issues, lobbying the government to designate the first protected marine park for his beloved sea creatures and the coral reefs. Bob stopped divers and snorkelers from taking coral long before there was an actual conservation movement or any law established to protect the marine environment, thus preserving his island's "treasures." His uncanny problem-solving ability enabled him to invent and build his own scuba equipment, attracting increasing numbers of tourists to experience Cayman's magnificent underwater world with Bob Soto's Diving. He was always working on the "next" adventure, leading to his incredible tales of treasure hunting and pioneering live-aboard diving. As the business grew, Bob eventually built a dive lodge in East End. Bob was a Christian man. He was kind, gentle, and loving, always with a smile, but not to be crossed! He had a passion to honor others, as evidenced by his work on "Tradition," the memorial to seamen, which has become a favorite statue in Heroes Square in George Town, where thousands have taken photos alongside the father and son steering a ship into the "abyss." In November 2014, he had the Home Guard veterans honored with all their names etched on the cenotaph in front of the Elmslie Memorial Church. When you visit Cayman, do not miss it!Come along on Bob Soto's "extraordinary adventures" of scuba diving; treasure hunting; sailing; rafting; and tasting life in Cayman when there were no planes, just ships, donkeys and catboats for transportation. Journey with Bob from the "Islands that time forgot" to modern-day Cayman. This is Bob's story. He tells it straight from the heart.
