Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Commons' explores the many forms of development being championed by Africa's residents, users, and citizens. In addition to managing property and shared tangible and intangible resources collectively, communities are experimenting with a concept of 'commoning' founded on values such as community, engagement, reciprocity, and trust. In practice, their approach takes the form of land-based commons, housing cooperatives, hybrid cultural spaces or places for innovation, and collaborative digital platforms. The purpose of this book, where observation of historical and recent practices converges with new theories within commons scholarship, is not to promote commons themselves. Rather, it examines the tensions, drivers of change, and opportunities that surround commons dynamics in Africa. This book highlights the abundance of commons-based entrepreneurial processes in Sub-Saharan Africa and shows that partnerships between African public authorities and communities involved in the commons can be powerful drivers of sustainable development for the continent.

The Marseille Mosaic addresses the city’s past and present, exploring the relationship between Marseille and the rest of France, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Proposing new models for the study of place by integrating approaches from the humanities and social sciences, this volume offers an idiosyncratic “mosaic,” which vividly details the challenges facing other French and European cities and the ways residents are developing alternative perspectives and charting new urban futures.

Book Non Standard Architectural Productions

Download or read book Non Standard Architectural Productions written by Sandra Karina Löschke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures concepts and projects that reshape the discipline of architecture by prioritizing people over buildings. In doing so, it uncovers sophisticated approaches that go beyond standard architectural protocols to explore experience-based aesthetics, encounters, action-based research, critical practices, and social engagement. If these are widely understood as singular or incompatible approaches, the book reveals that they form a growing network of interrelations and generate levels of flexibility and dynamism that are reshaping the discipline. The thirteen chapters analyze thought-provoking projects – branded museums, restaged exhibitions, home/work spaces, multi-cultural spaces, ageing apartment blocks, abandoned homes, and urban slums amongst them. Together, they enliven the stalled debate about a single architectural response to the complex challenges of the contemporary world by highlighting pluralistic perspectives on architecture that offer fresh solutions on how architecture can improve people’s lives. Featuring essays from an international range of authors, this book makes a vital contribution to our understanding of the wider conditions under which, and in relation to which, contemporary architecture is produced.

Book Climatic Heterotopias as Spaces of Inclusion

Download or read book Climatic Heterotopias as Spaces of Inclusion written by Lazaros Mavromatidis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores, discusses and considers spatial research and its relevant pedagogic perspectives on the crossings, interactions and transformations of contemporary territorialities. The book addresses the issue of conceiving "translocal" spaces of inclusion within the framework of contemporary imposed nomadism and climate change. The concept of "climatic heterotopias" is an original, elegant concept, introduced into the pedagogy of architecture to develop teaching which aims to bring together the architectural substance and this real social need that aims to mitigate the spatial effects of climate change. Climatic Heterotopias as Spaces of Inclusion promotes the use of spatial theory and philosophy as the tools to build a strong architectural concept. The purpose of the individual contributions in the book is to introspectively explain the original concept of "climatic heterotopias". An overview is given of an innovative, penetrating pedagogic praxis intended to enhance intuition by transforming the architectural design studio into an interface where research is incorporated into everyday architectural conceptual practice, through interaction and openness. This book is a dynamic and implicit dialogue between the tutor and the learners which shapes, little by little, an alternative spatial narrative throughout architectural theory and design.

Book 01 Industrial Archaeology European approach to recovery productive memory

Download or read book 01 Industrial Archaeology European approach to recovery productive memory written by Mara Capone and published by FedOA - Federico II University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [English]: The book collects the contributions of an interdisciplinary work carried out during a BIP (Blended Intensive Program) funded by the European community. The topic is related to the abandoned industrial sites that are protected for historical interest. Starting from a comparison between the different approaches based on the study of the best practices and the different methods and tools of analysis, some premises have been defined for the representation of the site and the development of transformation hypotheses for reusing of the ex Corradini in S. Giovanni. Stimulating the cultural debate, dealing with different cultural realities, defining replicable methodological paths are the main objectives of this work.

Book Corpus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Luc Nancy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2009-08-25
  • ISBN : 0823229637
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Corpus written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”
