Book Sweet Liberia

Download or read book Sweet Liberia written by Susan D. Peters and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, Susan (aka Ahnydah Rahm) Peters fled Liberia with her children, leaving behind a war characterized as, "The bloodiest Civil War since the Biafran War in 1967," but returning with the faith that would help her rebuild her life and uplift her heart and soul! Sweet Liberia, Lessons from the Coal Pot is a delightful, but painfully honest, memoir that chronicles the thick slice of humanity sandwiched between Liberia's April 12, 1980 coup and the Civil War, in 1989. Like many others who embraced Black Pride, Afros, African clothing and names in the 70's, Susan and thousands more, took it one-step further and immigrated to Mother Africa. This story is set against the author's personal growth, her cultural struggles and triumphs; and is an informative, personally revealing, often-comical account of her family's eleven-year journey immersed in the rich culture of Liberia, West Africa. Now, as Liberia stands on the threshold of rising under the leadership of Africa's first elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Susan writes about the wisdom, beauty, and resiliency she witnessed during her sojourn.

Book Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Download or read book Swing Low Sweet Chariot written by Antonio McDaniel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-04-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, thousands of emancipated and freeborn blacks from the United States returned to Africa to colonize the area now known as Liberia. In this, the first systematic study of the demographic impact of this move on the migrants, Antonio McDaniel finds that the health of migrant populations depends on the adaptability of the individuals in the group, not on their race. McDaniel compares the mortality rates of the emigrants to those of other migrants to tropical areas. He finds that, contrary to popular belief, black immigrants during this period died at unprecedented rates. Moreover, he shows that though the emigrant's mortality levels were exceptionally high, their mortality patterns were consistent with those of other populations. McDaniel concludes that the greater the variance between the environment left and the environment entered, the higher the probability of contracting a new disease, and, in some cases, of death from these diseases. Additionally, a migrant's health can be affected by dietary changes, differences in local pathogens, inappropriate immunities, and increased risk of accidents due to unfamiliar surroundings.

Book excerpt: Liberia was a colony for freed and freeborn African Americans for twenty-five years before becoming the first republic on the African continent in 1847. Today, Liberia is recovering from over twenty years of violence, which include seven years of civil war (1989-1996). From depleted iron ore mines to enviable diamond reserves, from indiscriminate logging to the world's largest rubber plantation, from the shrieking pepper bird to the docile pygmy hippopotamus, this book is a spirited investigation of the sharp contrasts that define the Liberian land and its people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Book of Liberian Parables: Wise Sayings and Their Simple Interpretations presents a beautiful compilation of brief parables and wise sayings gleaned from the oral culture of Liberians. Using simple stories about life in everyday circumstances, each parable illustrates a wise moral for guiding ones life. In a few spots, lists of short aphorisms present expressions that offer insights for walking with ones neighbors and family along peaceful pathways. One maxim, for instance, observes, We can all sing together, but we cant all talk together, meaning, Talk one at a time to understand each other. In gathering, arranging, and sharing these cultural treasures, Lulu V. Marshall has crafted a work that invites readers of all ages to enjoy these cultural treasures either alone or by sharing with others. Because the collection avoids any strong or foul language, the readings are good for young and old alike. If you enjoy learning about other locales by absorbing what people who live in those cultures find most memorable and desire to tell others or if you seek wise guidance for your life, then A Book of Liberian Parables will meet your needs with wit, whimsy, and wisdom.
