Book Liberalism and Mass Shootings

Download or read book Liberalism and Mass Shootings written by Roger Ball and published by Roger Ball. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are today's young people being psychologically conditioned to violence, sexual perversion, and suicidal hopelessness? Will mass shootings continue? Is the rise in same-sex attraction a closely related problem? Will violence continue to increase? Will deaths of despair continue to rise? Will America destroy itself from within? REVISED AND EDITED: America is now facing the worst psychological crisis in its history. What has changed over the past fifty-plus years that would produce such an outcome? How long will mass shootings (and school shootings) continue? Why do so many young people struggle with murderous and suicidal impulses (not to mention depression, anxiety, and same-sex attraction)? "I want to show how the problem of mass shootings, and America's mental health crisis in general, can be attributed to three primary causes: 1) the psychological effects of today's passive childrearing practices (producing low self-worth, insecurity, depression, self-doubt, anger, envious resentment, self-loathing, entitlement, loneliness, vindictive behavior, and same-sex attraction). Kids today are hurting on a much deeper level than anything seen in recent generations. They are also more unbridled than ever and likely to act upon distorted emotional urges and impulses. 2) the breakdown of the traditional family structure which produces these same psychological effects only worse. This has been accomplished primarily by extending sexual permissiveness throughout society, which has produced countless fatherless and dysfunctional homes. The majority of mass shooters and other violent offenders come from these environments. 3) the uncivilized means by which we bring about change in society (radical politics). This third element is what brings it all together. It is also a product of the first two. As most are aware, the spiritual seekers of the sixties (hippies) that brought us the sexual revolution were predominantly the children of gross neglect. This revolution is where today's social liberalism rapidly gained its influence within the political and cultural spheres. As a consequence of the unstable home environments, many of today's young people simply do not possess the emotional and psychological stability necessary to endure life's more negative circumstances and challenges." This book exposes the true culprit behind America's mental health crisis and reveals how this trend can be reversed if the necessary changes are made. Book excerpt: While there is a tacit appreciation that freedom from violence will lead to more prosperous relations among peoples, violence continues to be deployed for various political and social ends. Yet the problem of violence still defies neat description, subject to many competing interpretations. Histories of Violence offers an accessible yet compelling examination of the problem of violence as it appears in the corpus of canonical figures – from Hannah Arendt to Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault to Slavoj Žižek – who continue to influence and inform contemporary political, philosophical, sociological, cultural, and anthropological study. Written by a team of internationally renowned experts, this is an essential interrogation of post-war critical thought as it relates to violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The explosive rise in the U.S. incarceration rate in the second half of the twentieth century, and the racial transformation of the prison population from mostly white at mid-century to sixty-five percent black and Latino in the present day, is a trend that cannot easily be ignored. Many believe that this shift began with the "tough on crime" policies advocated by Republicans and southern Democrats beginning in the late 1960s, which sought longer prison sentences, more frequent use of the death penalty, and the explicit or implicit targeting of politically marginalized people. In The First Civil Right, Naomi Murakawa inverts the conventional wisdom by arguing that the expansion of the federal carceral state-a system that disproportionately imprisons blacks and Latinos-was, in fact, rooted in the civil-rights liberalism of the 1940s and early 1960s, not in the period after. Murakawa traces the development of the modern American prison system through several presidencies, both Republican and Democrat. Responding to calls to end the lawlessness and violence against blacks at the state and local levels, the Truman administration expanded the scope of what was previously a weak federal system. Later administrations from Johnson to Clinton expanded the federal presence even more. Ironically, these steps laid the groundwork for the creation of the vast penal archipelago that now exists in the United States. What began as a liberal initiative to curb the mob violence and police brutality that had deprived racial minorities of their first civil right - physical safety - eventually evolved into the federal correctional system that now deprives them, in unjustly large numbers, of another important right: freedom. The First Civil Right is a groundbreaking analysis of root of the conflicts that lie at the intersection of race and the legal system in America." -- Publisher's description.

Book The Violence Project

Download or read book The Violence Project written by Jillian Peterson and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Groundbreaking." ―Rachel Louise Snyder, bestselling author of No Visible Bruises An examination of the phenomenon of mass shootings in America and an urgent call to implement evidence-based strategies to stop these tragedies Winner of the 2022 Minnesota Book Award Using data from the writers’ groundbreaking research on mass shooters, including first-person accounts from the perpetrators themselves, The Violence Project charts new pathways to prevention and innovative ways to stop the social contagion of violence. Frustrated by reactionary policy conversations that never seemed to convert into meaningful action, special investigator and psychologist Jill Peterson and sociologist James Densley built The Violence Project, the first comprehensive database of mass shooters. Their goal was to establish the root causes of mass shootings and figure out how to stop them by examining hundreds of data points in the life histories of more than 170 mass shooters—from their childhood and adolescence to their mental health and motives. They’ve also interviewed the living perpetrators of mass shootings and people who knew them, shooting survivors, victims’ families, first responders, and leading experts to gain a comprehensive firsthand understanding of the real stories behind them, rather than the sensationalized media narratives that too often prevail. For the first time, instead of offering thoughts and prayers for the victims of these crimes, Peterson and Densley share their data-driven solutions for exactly what we must do, at the individual level, in our communities, and as a country, to put an end to these tragedies that have defined our modern era.

Book The Apocalypse and the End of History

Download or read book The Apocalypse and the End of History written by Suzanne Schneider and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the political violence of modern jihad echoes the crises of western liberalism In this authoritative, accessible study, historian Suzanne Schneider examines the politics and ideology of the Islamic State (better known as ISIS). Schneider argues that today’s jihad is not the residue from a less enlightened time, nor does it have much in common with its classical or medieval form, but it does bear a striking resemblance to the reactionary political formations and acts of spectacular violence that are upending life in Western democracies. From authoritarian populism to mass shootings, xenophobic nationalism, and the allure of conspiratorial thinking, Schneider argues that modern jihad is not the antithesis to western neoliberalism, but rather a dark reflection of its inner logic. Written with the sensibility of a political theorist and based on extensive research into a wide range of sources, from Islamic jurisprudence to popular recruitment videos, contemporary apocalyptic literature and the Islamic State's Arabic-language publications, the book explores modern jihad as an image of a potential dark future already heralded by neoliberal modes of life. Surveying ideas of the state, violence, identity, and political community, Schneider argues that modern jihad and neoliberalism are two versions of a politics of failure: the inability to imagine a better life here on earth.

Book Weapons of Mass Distortion

Download or read book Weapons of Mass Distortion written by L. Brent Bozell and published by Forum Books. This book was released on 2004-07-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could Al Franken and his left-wing cronies possibly be right? Is liberal media bias just a myth propagated by conservatives, and have the mainstream media actually swung to the right? Absolutely not. In the new book Weapons of Mass Distortion, L. Brent Bozell III—founder and president of the Media Research Center, America’s largest and most respected media watchdog organization—presents the definitive account of how liberal bias in the news industry is alive and well. But here’s the thing: The liberal media are headed for a downfall. Bozell demonstrates how their monopoly on information is at last coming to an end, in large part because journalists continue to deny the bias that infects their news coverage. His unrivaled expertise allows him to show readers exactly how the media landscape is changing—and to expose the even bigger changes that are coming. Marshaling an astonishing amount of evidence, Bozell documents exactly how the news media deliberately attempt to set the national agenda through their slanted coverage. In the process he destroys the arguments that Franken and many other left-wing commentators have put forward regarding media bias. Weapons of Mass Distortion also reveals: • How the liberal media’s slanted coverage of President George W. Bush will play a huge role in the 2004 elections • Why liberals’ claims about the influence of Fox News and the “conservative media” are wrong—and deliberately misleading • How the mainstream press has waged war on the war on terrorism • Never-before-told stories of how leading journalists, behind the scenes, betray the liberal bias they so forcefully deny in public—incidents that Bozell has witnessed firsthand • How the same journalists who condemn the Right for “hate speech” regularly launch (and get away with) vicious personal attacks on conservatives • Clear evidence that the major news outlets are hemorrhaging viewers, readers, and listeners precisely because of their liberal bias By dominating the news media for so long, liberals have been able to control what we see and hear. But as Bozell makes clear, the Left will lose that control soon enough.

Book After Gun Violence

Download or read book After Gun Violence written by Craig Rood and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass shootings have become the “new normal” in American life. The same can be said for the public debate that follows a shooting: blame is cast, political postures are assumed, but no meaningful policy changes are enacted. In After Gun Violence, Craig Rood argues that this cycle is the result of a communication problem. Without advocating for specific policies, Rood examines how Americans talk about gun violence and suggests how we might discuss the issues more productively and move beyond our current, tragic impasse. Exploring the ways advocacy groups, community leaders, politicians, and everyday citizens talk about gun violence, Rood reveals how the gun debate is about far more than just guns. He details the role of public memory in shaping the discourse, showing how memories of the victims of gun violence, the Second Amendment, and race relations influence how gun policy is discussed. In doing so, Rood argues that forgetting and misremembering this history leads interest groups and public officials to entrenched positions and political failure and drives the public further apart. Timely and innovative, After Gun Violence advances our understanding of public discourse in an age of gridlock by illustrating how public deliberation and public memory shape and misshape one another. It is a search to understand why public discourse fails and how we can do better.

Book Gun Violence Prevention

Download or read book Gun Violence Prevention written by Selina E. M. Kerr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the gun-related policy responses to three school shooting incidents in the United States. Gun violence prevention activists and others involved in policy making were interviewed for the book, and news media articles and policy documents were critically assessed. As a result, interpretations of the Second Amendment are shown to affect the acceptability of certain gun restrictions. News media content and policy documents, coupled with the thoughts of activists, also give an indication of why certain policy measures passed and others failed at the time of each of the case studies. This book should be of interest to social policy, politics, criminology and sociology students and academics, as well as those with a general interest in the topic.

Download or read book Liberal Delusion written by John Marsh and published by Arena books. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is western civilisation based on a mistaken understanding of humanity? Fundamental to any society is its comprehension of human nature. It shapes attitudes and policies on a whole range of issues: interpersonal relations, child-rearing, discipline and punishment, economics and welfare. For millennia western societies were based on the idea that human nature is flawed. This was turned upside down 300 years ago during the Enlightenment by writers such as Rousseau, who argued that we are born good and later warped by parents and society; a liberal view of human nature which is now being challenged by scientific discoveries in the fields of the mind, the brain, and genetics (including the Human Genome), evolutionary psychology, and anthropology. This fundamental change has had profound effects. If we are essentially good then we can safely maximize freedom and abandon morality, religion and tradition. Many aspects of life have been liberalised - sexual behaviour, alcohol consumption, censorship, gambling, divorce laws and economic activity. Economic liberals thought free markets were rational and good and favoured minimal government interference and light-touch regulations. This led to the credit crunch and the greatest financial crisis since World War Two.Many parents now hesitate to discipline their own children. The belief that we are essentially good but corrupted by society has also influenced penal policy. Liberals see criminals as victims, not as wrongdoers; because surely no-one would choose to do something wrong. This is a world far removed from the self-sacrifice and fraternity shown during World War Two. It has not brought happiness but rather more alienated individuals. The outcome of egalitarian aims or methods has often missed its mark: e.g., in education it has led to the dumbing down of academic standards, grade inflation and a decline in social mobility. Egalitarian regimes from the French Revolution to the Soviet era have been amongst the most bigoted, brutal and bloody in history. The drive for greater social justice and fairness must remain an essential objective. There is, therefore, an urgent need to separate out the positive from the negative aspects of liberal thought and practice, as otherwise there is the risk of descent into moral anarchy and social disintegration.

Book Read Me Liberals

Download or read book Read Me Liberals written by Stacey Smith and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Read Me, Liberals" is an attempt to awaken a certain class of people that are morally at risk. The modern United States political system is dominated by a two-party system, Democrats and Republicans. Either party is perfect nor will the ever be perfect, but the Democratic party has gone so far left it is a threat to the freedom and safety of American citizens. The modern Democratic party and their allies want to dramatically alter the United States to their fascist ideology. They want total control of you and I by any means necessary. They want to control how you think and what you can say. Most importantly they want you to be submissive to a complete totalitarian government control. This book exposes all the hypocrisy, corruption, and moral insanity that comes from the "left". Most importantly it exposes the two-tiered justice system, one for Democrats and one for the rest of us. This book is meant to target liberals, democrats, and independents but will help educate conservatives and Republicans as well. I challenge anyone that loves the United States to read this and help save this country while we still can. Liberals will continue to push their one-world order agenda until they get what they want. The United States is more politically divided than any other time in history and we need to come together somehow.

Book Up From Liberalism

Download or read book Up From Liberalism written by William F. Buckley and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMERICA, fashionable observers say, is a non-ideological nation; and it is understandable why this is a phenomenon from which one takes pleasure. No one is more tedious than the totally ideologized man, the man who forces every passing phenomenon into his ideological mold to end up, for example, concluding that every friend of Congressional investigating committees is an enemy of civil liberties, or that every enemy of Congressional investigating committees is a friend of civil liberties. American political conflicts are not generally fought on the battleground of ideas. The thoroughly non-Ideological Man is usually designated as steward of the American political community. This is partly a good thing, because everyone knows that ideological totalism can bring whole societies down, as it did Hitler’s, and permanently terrorize others, as Communism has done. The danger comes when a distrust of doctrinaire social systems eases over into a dissolute disregard for principle. A disregard for enduring principle delivers a society, eviscerated, over to the ideologists. America, most historians teach us, has sought to avoid the extremes, to be flexible without resembling Silly Putty; to be principled without being arch. I think our country is not clearly enough avoiding the former extreme. I think she is in danger of losing her identity—not on account of the orthodoxy that we are being told in some quarters threatens to suffocate us; but for failure to nourish any orthodoxy at all. I think the attenuation of the early principles of this country has made America vulnerable to the most opportunistic ideology of the day, the strange and complex ideology of modern Liberalism. I think, moreover, that disordered and confused though it concededly is these days, conservatism is the only apparent rallying point. To put forward such a thesis is to take on many obligations. Very well. But bear in mind the logical maxim that one man’s failure to prove a thesis does not render it invalid. I am by no means the ideal person to take on the job at hand, which is to discredit doctrinaire Liberalism and plead the viability of enlightened conservatism. I have many disqualifications, among them that of having personally experienced the tenacious ill will of some of the men about whom I shall be writing; and I see some of them, day after day, berating people who stand for the things I love. I herewith hoist high a flag of truce, respectfully inviting their attention to what I have to say; but I will not feign surprise if the flag comes hurtling down, felled by a withering burst of fire from a hotblooded evangelist in the Liberal camp—who was brought up to assume that the differences between us, Liberals and conservatives, are not negotiable. It is not as though the Communists had hoisted the flag.
