Book excerpt: The operating room utilization and turnover time (TOT) has an enormous impact on how effectively patients receive access to care prior to surgery. The objective of this study was to identify whether Lean Six Sigma would reduce turnover times between the gynecological surgical procedures. This exploratory-descriptive study was conducted over a six months' timeframe. The initial process occurred over a two month period retrospectively from July - August, collecting turnover times using the existing process within the gynecological surgical service. The second phase of data collection occurred over a four months period. The primary focus for collecting data was to determine if restructuring and decreasing the gynecological instrument sets using Lean Six Sigma would lessen the existing turnover time from 45 minutes or more to 30 minutes or less. The changes in the gynecological surgical service increased patient safety, staff education, and adaptability to change within a busy surgical service. This change ultimately resulted in a reduction of the turnover time from the existing standards. As a result, turnover times which were the focal point for this study demonstrated a significant decrease of 25-31 minutes versus 49 minutes - 70 minutes; (P
