Cécile Dauphin (C.N.R.S), Pierrette Lebrun-Pézerat et Danièle Poublan, toutes trois membres du Centre de recherches historiques de l'E.H.E.S.S., ont cherché avant toute chose à comprendre les conditions de rédaction mêmes de ces nombreuses lettres, à éclairer le "pacte épistolaire" qui les régit et à montrer comment une mémoire familiale se construit. Ainsi, au travers des codes et des rituels d'une famille, se dévoile un monde intime et affectif auquel le discours historique rend de plus en plus justice en s'exerçant patiemment à une écoute plus attentive de l'humain.
